What would the world be like if cars could drive themselves? Imagine seeing an empty car passing by on its way to pick up its owner, or a car full of passengers who are reading, listening to music or even sleeping. But none of them are worried about the road ahead.
Well, all of this could be the future of driving. There are several companies, including Google, working on driverless cars, which are currently in the testing stages. If the tests are successful, we could buy an electric, self-driven car very soon. But, how is it possible for a car to drive itself?
Cars already have many features allowing them to take over drivers during certain situations. Some features include cars being able to park themselves, or slow down when they detect objects close by. They can also control the speed if there are dangerous conditions, such as snow or slippery (滑的) roads.
Other features have also changed the way drivers react to some situations. Scientists and engineers believe, with the help of wireless signals, cameras and GPS, we are now at a stage where creating a safe self-driving car might be possible.
The self-driven car may be the answer to lowering the number of deathly accidents caused by careless drivers or dangerous conditions. However, there are still some people who do not like the idea. American lawyer Whit Drake, for example, doesn’t believe these cars are safe. He thinks the

possibility of the technology making a mistake will be too high.

A. teach B. replace C. protect D. check 36. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. Google has produced and sold self-driven cars. B. Physicist Stephen Hawking said people should return to the Moon and go to Mars because leaving Earth may be the only way to save humanity. Hawking said that as Earth faces climate change and pressure on natural resources, human beings need to reach beyond our planet.
“We are running out of space and the only places to go to are other worlds,” he said. “It is time to explore other solar systems. Spreading out may be the only thing that saves us from ourselves. I believe that humans need to leave Earth,” he said. “If humanity is to continue for another million years, our future lies in boldly going where no one else has gone before.”
Hawking said human beings should return to the moon by the year 2020 and Mars by 2025. This, he said, will unite humans in the shared purpose of exploring the universe. “Spreading out into space will completely change the future of humanity,” he said. “I hope it would unite competitive nations in a single goal, to face the common challenge for us all.”
Hawking considered that reaching the Moon, Mars and other plants would get young people interested in space-related sciences.
He said making the first moves into space would elevate (提升) humanity because it would have to involve many countries.” “Whenever we make a great new leap, such as the Moon landings, we bring people and nations together, usher in new discoveries, and new technologies,” Hawking said. “ ▲ . It needs a concerted global approach, too. Everyone should join in. We need to rekindle (重新点燃) the excitement of the early days of space travel in the 1960s.”
The European Space Agency has announced a plan to create a “Moon Village” after the International Space Station is taken out of service in 2024. China is also reportedly interested in sending an astronaut to the Moon. The United States is working on sending astronauts to Mars. The U.S. space agency, NASA, hopes to do this by the 2030s. 38. In Hawking’s opinion, what makes human beings leave earth? a. climate change b. population growth c. water shortage d. environmental pollution e. pressure on natural resources A. ab B. ae C. cd D. ce 39.
