Section III Reading Comprehension (30%)

If you are like most people, your intelligence varies from season to season. You are probably a lot sharper(敏锐) in the spring than you are at any other time of the year. A noted scientist Ellsworth Huntington concluded from other men’s work and his own among peoples in different climates that climate and temperature have a definite effect on our mental abilities. He found that cool weather is more favorable for creative thinking than summer heat is. This does not mean that all people are less intelligent in the summer than they are during the rest of the year. It does mean, however, that the mental abilities of large numbers of people tend to be lowest in the summer. Spring seems the best period of the year for thinking. One reason may be that in the spring man’s mental abilities are affected by the same factors that bring about great changes in all nature. Fall is the next-best season, then is winter. As for summer, it seems to be a good time to take long vacation from thinking!

36. Huntington based in his conclusion on ____.

A. records of changes in his own intelligence B. work with peoples in different climates C. records of temperature changes D. all of the above

A. all nature, including man, is growing then B. it lasts longer than the other seasons C. it is neither too warm nor too cold D. both B and C

39. The two best seasons for thinking seem to be _____. A. spring and fall B. winter and summer C. summer and spring D. fall and winter

40. According to the selection, vacation from thinking should be taken _____. A. several times throughout the year B. during spring and fall C. during the summer D. as seldom as possible

The standards of science teaching are set by the university professor who, in principle at least, divides his time equally between teaching and scientific research. The professor writes the text books, directs the college science curriculum (课程), and train the elementary and high school teachers in science. Indirectly or directly the university professor is responsible for the quality of science teaching at every level from kindergarten (幼儿园) through graduate school (研究生院). If science curriculum and teacher training are to be improved, the professor must lead the way, for only he has the necessary resources: the insight into the structure and content of science, control of teacher training in science, and the resources for instructional research and curriculum development. I am sorry to say that the professor has hardly recognized his responsibility, let alone fulfilled it with much distinction.

The first true piece of sports equipment that man invented was the ball.

In ancient Egypt, as everywhere, pitching stones was a favorite children’s game. But a badly thrown rock could hurt a child. Looking for something less dangerous to throw, the Egyptians made what were probably the first balls. At first, balls were made of grass or leaves held together by vines(葡萄藤). Later they were made of pieces of animal skin sewed together and stuffed with feathers or hay. Even though the Egyptians were warlike, they found time for peaceful games. Before long they had developed a number of ball games, each with its own set of rules. Perhaps they played ball more for instruction than for fun. Ball playing was thought of mainly as a way to teach young men the speed and skill they would need for war. 46. The ball was probably invented because _____.
