Part Ⅳ Reading Comprehension:

(35 minutes)

答题 Anna Douglas was seventy-two years old when she started writing her newspaper column. She had been the director of a school before she retired, but she needed to keep busy. She was even willing to work without pay. That was the reason she found a volunteer job with an agency. The agency that she chose to work for was a business that helped other businesses find jobs for old people. Every day she talked with other retired people like herself. By talking, she recognized two things. Old people had abilities that were not being used. Old people also had problems—mostly problems with communication.

Mrs. Douglas found a new purpose for herself. Through the years, from time to time she had written stories about people for national magazines. Now there was a new subject: old people like herself. She began to write a newspaper column called “Over Sixty”, which focuses on getting old. She writes about the problems of old people, especially their problems with being misunderstood.

Anna Douglas uses her thinking ability to see the truth behind a problem. She understands the reasons why problems begin. She understands old people and young people, too. For example, one of here readers said that his grandchildren left the house as soon as he came to visit. Mrs. Douglas suggested some ways for him to increase understanding with his grandchildren. She told him to listen to young people’s music and to watch the most popular television shows.

“It’s important to know something about your grandchildren’s world,” says Mrs. Douglas, “But most of all, keep your mind open. Do not close out other people. Listen to the other people in your family. Keep on talking. And above all else, keep on listening and communicating. You stop living when you stop sharing ideas with others.”

For any Englishman there can never be any discussion as to who is the world’s greatest poet and greatest dramatist. Only one name can possibly suggest itself to him: that of William Shakespeare. Every Englishman has some knowledge, however slight, of the work of our greatest writer. All of us use words, phrases and quotations from Shakespeare’s writings that have become part of the common property of English speaking people. Most of the time we are probably unaware of the source of the words we use, rather like the old lady who was taken to see a performance of HAMLET and complained that it was full of well-known proverbs and quotations!

Shakespeare, more perhaps than any other writer, made full use of the great resources of the English language. Most of us use about five thousand words in our normal employment of English; Shakespeare in his works used about twenty-five thousand! There is probably no better way for a foreigner to appreciate the richness and variety of the English language than by studying the various ways in which Shakespeare used it. Such a study is well worth the effort (it is not, of course, recommended to beginners), even though some aspects of English usage, and the meaning of many words, have changed since Shakespeare’s day. 43. English people A. have never discussed who is the world’s greatest poet and greatest dramatist B. never discuss the world’s great poets or dramatists

C. are sure who is the world’s greatest poet and greatest dramatist D. do not care who is the world’s greatest poet and greatest dramatist 44. Every Englishman knows

A. more or less about Shakespeare B. Shakespeare, but only slightly C. all Shakespeare’s writings

D. only the name of the greatest English writer 45. Which of the following is true?

A. We use all the words, phrases and quotations from Shakespeare’s writings.

B. Shakespeare’s writings have become the property of those who are learning to

speak English.

C. It is likely to be true that people often do not know the origin of words they use. D. All the words people use are taken from Shakespeare’s writings. 46. “HAMLET’ IS

A. a play written by Shakespeare

B. a play recommended by Shakespeare C. a play appreciated by Shakespeare

D. a play people have been complaining about

47. It is worthwhile to study the various ways in which Shakespeare used English because

A. English words have changed a lot since Shakespeare’s time

B. By doing so one can be fully aware of the richness of the English language C. English words are now being used in the same way as in Shakespeare’s days D. none of the above

Making a film takes a long time and is very hard work. Writing the story for the film may take many weeks. Filming the story being acted—or shooting the film, as it is called—often takes at least six months. Actors and camera-men work from very early in the morning until late at night. Each scene has to be acted and re-acted, filmed and re-filmed, until it is just right. Sometimes the same scene may have to be acted twenty or thirty times.

The film studio is like a large factory, and the indoor stages are very big indeed. Scenery of all kinds is made in the studio: Churches, houses, castles, and forests are all built of wood and cardboard. Several hundred people work together to

make one film. Some of these people are the actors and actresses. The director of the film, however, is the most important person in a film studio. He decides how the scenes should be filmed and how the actors should act.

Most people go to see a film because they know the film-stars in it. Sometimes the film may be very poor. It is best to choose a film made by a good director. Some famous directors make their films very real. People feel that they themselves are among the people in the film. 48. Shooting the film often takes A. less than six months. B. at least six months. C. many weeks. D. from early in the morning until late at night. 49. Scenery in the film studio is made from A. wood and cardboard. B. indoor stages. C. houses. D. films. 50. The director of a film A. is always an actor. B. makes the scenery. C. says how each scene should be filmed. D. is a film star.

51. We should choose a film which A. has the actors we know. B. seems very real. C. takes a long time to make. D. is made by a good director. 52. The scenes have to be filmed many times because A. it takes a long time to make a film B. it is often difficult to make them just right. C. Many people work together. D. The film is poor.

Both late sleepers and early risers find the fixed hours of a nine-to-five work day a problem. Now there is an answer that seems to please them both. Employees of over 500 businesses, organizations, and government agencies in the United States are adapting their work hours to suit their individual needs. It’s called “flexible time” (flextime) and it means, for example, that employees can start working at any time during the first three hours when their office is open and leave after completing their required daily working time. Early risers can begin work at seven a.m., finish at three and still have daylight time for shopping, picking up children at school, or recreation. Late sleepers need to report for work until 10 a.m. — but they must stay on their job until six in the evening.

Says a Boston, Massachusetts, bank official: “Our employees like the system, and tardiness has been virtually eliminated. Fewer people are absent, turnover had dropped markedly, and productivity and morale have risen.”

53. Workers who either enjoy sleeping late or rising early react in what way to a flexible work hour schedule? A. depressingly B. angrily C. happily D. apathetically 54. How much time do workers have to start work? A. half an hour B. three hours C. five hours D. two and a half 55. The normal American work day schedule is A. eight hours B. five hours C. six and one half hours D. flexible

56. What is one of the benefits of the flexible work schedule? A. The time passes by more quickly. B. There is more time for lunch.

C. Hardly anyone is ever late for work. D. Late sleepers have plenty of sleep.

57. What is the earliest possible time someone can get out of work on an eight hour schedule? A. 2: 30 p.m. B. 1 p.m. C. 3 p.m. D. 4 p.m.
