摘 要

信用证因其“可靠性”而在国际贸易中被广泛使用,然而这种被人认为“安全”的支付方式并非完全可靠，有些贸易公司对信用证操作还存在误解。其原因之一是信用证英语属于专门用途英语（ESP）的范畴，有其独特的语言特征。因此,我们有必要对怎样把握信用证语言的特征,并正确理解和翻译信用证进行研究,从而更好地指导进出口业务的审证工作。本文通过引用网上和作者实习所在公司使用的信用证的大量例句，全面分析信用证的词汇特征和句法特征，并指出如何翻译具有这些特征的信用证，旨在帮助外贸从业人员全面地了解信用证的语言知识,特别注意归纳翻译过程中应该注意的问题,为进出口业务实际操作过程中的审证工作提供理论上的依据,在此基础上避免由于错误理解信用证而造成的不必要的损失,从而更好地指导外贸公司的对外贸易实践活动。

Abstract

Letter of Credit(L/C) is widely used because of its safety. However, this way of payment which is regarded as “safe payment” is not exactly safe. There are still some companies who do not know how to handle the L/C in a right way. One of its reasons is that L/C English is often seen as a type of English for specific purposes and thus often demonstrates its special linguistic and stylistic characteristics. Thus, it’s necessary to study on how to master the linguistic characteristics so that we can understand and translate L/C rightly, which can also guide the examination of import and export documents. By listing examples , this article gives a detailed analysis of the lexical and syntactic features of L/C English ,and discuss how to translate those L/C with these features in order to help foreign trade employees understand the language of L/C comprehensively, and special attention should be paid to summarize the translation issues, which will provide the theory basis for actual operation of examining import and export documents and help to avoid the unnecessary losses because of misunderstanding the L/C.
