Unit 3 Travel Journal

Items Details This unit is from New Senior English for China Student’s Book 1. The topic of this unit centers on travel and travel journal, including the travel plan, where to travel, Analysis of how to travel and so on. Travel is very attractive to the students. But before traveling, the Material we must do a lot of work. The reading material is about how they make their travel plan and how to carry out their plan. The students can learn how to describe their attitudes and how to make a travel plan if they want to travel. Travel is a very beneficial and attractive activity. One can gains a lot, such as, general knowledge of geography, politics, communicate skills and travel experience. This book fits the senior one students. The advantages of Ss: 1. They are pretty active about what they are interested in. 2. They are willing to share and demonstrate themselves in public. Analysis of The shortage of Ss: Learners 1. Owing to the limited amounts of vocabularies , they always have difficulties in expressing thoughts and opinions in appropriate way. 2. Sometimes they devoted themselves to the hot topic which they were enthusiastic about so that they didn’t draw their attention on the knowledge we should learn but just focused on the topic. Teaching Principles We should remember the main idea about the “Task-based language teaching” and “Situational teaching”. Among each part, “tasks” should be the line of the teaching. In order to complete 1

the task, we teachers play a role as coaches instead of players. As a result, students are always the dominant role. Just give them an order, a tip, a hint or a suggestion to finish the task by themselves. Provide them more chances to speak and think. A. Knowledge 1. The students learn how to use reading skills, such as skimming , scanning. 2. Grasp the key vocabularies, phrases and sentences: journal,fare,transport,finally,cycle,persuade,insist,proper,properly,rapid,I prefer to... B. Ability 1. The students learn how to make a travel plan. Teaching Aims 2. The students learn what the travel journal is and try to write their own ones. and Objectives C. Feelings and Attitudes 1. Sometimes we need not only do material preparation but also spiritual preparation: courage, ambition, willpower and common sense. 2. Encourage students to work as a team. 3. Encourage students to record what they saw, what they heard, what they thought. Motivate them to be active, optimistic and insightful to life by travel. 4. Encourage students to travel in a more environmental friendly way and raise their awareness of environment protection. Important 1. Master the new words and phrases in this unit. Point of 2. Help the students to get a better understanding of the text. Teaching 3. Help the students to make a presentation on one’s own travel plan. Difficult 1. Make students learn how to make a travel plan. Express fluently their travel plan Points of and wishes. Teaching 2. Grasp the main idea of the text and how to tell the writer’s attitude. Teaching Aids A computer, text books, note books, blackboard. 2

The methods are Task-based Language Teaching, Situational Teaching Counseling-Learning Community Language Learning. Show some pictures about sharing bikes and ask students to show their own experiences . Teaching Methods -------Situational Teaching Pair work: Have a competition -------Situational Teaching Find out the main idea. -------Task-based Language Teaching

Teaching Procedures

Steps Step 1 Leading-in Specific methods 1.Sing a song TRAVEL LIGHT, walk around the classroom, issue the learning material “Everybody wants to travel light.”. Our ancients told us: “Read ten thousand books, travel ten thousand miles.” This unit topic is “Travel Journal” 2. Have a free talk Talk something about travelling,such as their destinations, means of transport. Time: 2 minutes Intention: ? To arouse the students’ interest in the unit 1. Show some pictures of sharing bikes “I prefer bike to plane, because it is convenient.” 3

Step 2 Warming up With the development of society, more and more people choose to go to work or go to school by bike. This shows that they want to live a slow and healthy life. So bike sharing is booming in china. It is reported that 500 sharing bikes will be put into use in Guoyang. 2.Encourage students to talk something about sharing bikes. 3. Introduce two friends who also like cycling to students and lead in the passsage Journey down the Mekong. Part 1 the dream and the plan Time: 3 minutes Intention: ? To lead in the topic. ? To develop their interest in cycling . Step3 Background information Time: 2 minutes Intention: ? To enrich their background information. Step 4 Reading 1. Skimming ( 2minutes) Guide students to go through the text quickly and find the writing style . 2. Scanning (3minutes) Encourage students to scan the text and match the main ideas of each paragraph. 3. Careful reading (15minutes) Ask the students to read the text more carefully and answer some questions. 4. Post reading (2 minutes) 1. Play a video about the Mekong river. 2. After the video, ask the students to answer the following questions Q1: How long is the Mekong river? Q2: How many countries does it flow through? 4

Ask Ss to summarize what they learnt Summarize the key points on PPT. Intension: ? To improve the students’ ability of exchanging ideas and let them get the general idea of the given passage through skimming and scanning . ? To let students to gain the knowledge of some common sense and the words ,phrases and sentences. Step 5 Role Play 1. Imagine that Wei Kun and Wang Wei are cycling aroud Guoyang and you are a host or hostess from GYTV. 2. Divide the students into small groups and student A plays as a host from GYTV and students B and C play as Wangwei and Wangkun. The host asks some questions Possible questions: Q1 Why do you choose to cycle? Q2 What should we pay attention to while travelling? Q3 What attracts you most during travelling? Time: 6 minutes Intension: ? To encourage students to speak English in public ? To arouse their love for our hometown. Step 6 Emotional education 1. To cycle ,to slow down, to live a healthy life. 2. Life is wonderful. Love it, and we will enjoy it. Nature is beautiful. Explore it, and we can benefit from it. Time: 1 minutes Intension: ? To raise their aware of healthy life and environmental protection. ? To develop their love for life and nature. Step Homework
