system. Radar as a kind of observation equipment has been used for monitoring and identifying ships for a long time. With the rapid development of communication and computer technology, AIS system was born and to show its remarkable advantages.

The AIS system puts forward unprecedented identifying information and high real-time motion parameters of ships. Compared to radar, it has more information, higher accuracy, better real-time performance, strong anti-interference capability, and through-obstacles transmission, etc. The AIS system will bring a revolutionary progress to marine vessel surveillance.

The paper analyzes the development of AIS system, including its superiority and importance, and the application of AIS in sailing. To this end, we should have a comprehensive understanding of VTS and an accurate analysis on its production background and basic function. In the meantime, the paper studies the application of AIS in navigating practice.
