Dear Jim, I’m so delighted to know you’re coming to study and live in China. I’d like to extend my warm welcome to you! To help you adapt to the new life here, I’d highly recommend you a super popular app—WeChat.

As a multi-functional social media app, WeChat can be found on almost every Chinese mobile phone. You can post photos on WeChat Moments about your life or repost interesting stories and give Likes to your friends’ Moments as well.

Apart from socializing, you can pay for almost anything with WeChat, from online shopping to booking services. All you need to do is show your WeChat payment code or just use the scan function. You don’t need to carry any paper money. What a relief!

WeChat is such a convenient and efficient tool that I’m sure you’ll fall in love with it. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me. I’m looking forward to hearing about your experience with WeChat. And I hope you’ll have a good time in China.

Yours, Li Hua

Text 1 W: What is the weather forecast for the coming 3 days? M: Let me check it. Today, it’s pleasant with some sun; Monday, it’s partly cloudy; Tuesday, it’s windy. Text 2 M: You didn’t come to watch our show. What happened? Are you OK? W: Early this morning I woke up with a fever. M: Did you see a doctor? W: Yes. He gave me some medicine. Now, the fever is down a little bit. M: But you still need a good rest. W: That is exactly what I am doing. Thanks for calling.

Text 3

M: Hi, Susan, have you read the message about the conference on global warming next Friday? W: Not yet. I’ve been busy the whole afternoon. Do you know the schedule? M: The first speaker begins talking at 9:00, followed by a tea break. The second session begins at 10:30, and lunch will be served at 12:30. Text 4 W: Hello, Mr. Santos? This is Brenda Carlisle. M: Yes, Brenda. Have you thought about our offer? W: Yes I have. And I accept. I’d love to work for Nano Tech Industries. M: Wonderful. Now, before you begin, there are some paperwork details to be taken care of. Text 5

W: How did the school market go yesterday? M: Very impressive. More than 100 students came, selling old stuff like toys, books, pencil cases, and many other used items. It’s unfortunate that you were not there. W: Do you have a name for such a school event? M: We call it “the Flea Market on Campus”. It’s a good opportunity to get rid of good-quality stuff we don’t want and for others to find a real bargain. W: Did you enjoy it? M: Yeah, we had a lot of fun. Actually, it isn’t just about finding cheap things to buy though. It’s great to find an item that has a past life and imagine its previous owner and the history behind it. W: Hopefully, I won’t miss it next time and try to be a real bargain hunter. Text 6

W: So, Barry. It was good to talk to you. Thanks very much for phoning. M: My pleasure. By the way, how’s your golf these days? Still playing? W: No, not much. I just don’t seem to find the time these days. M: What a shame! You used to enjoy it so much. W: It’s true. Right, Barry. The plane is about to take off. And please send me the report. M: It’ll be in the mail tonight. By the way, I’ve ordered you a taxi to the hotel. W: That’s great, Barry. Have a good weekend! M: Same to you, too! Bye, Tina. W: Bye, Barry. Text 7

W: I received a letter from a high school student who shares a room with another 5. He says he always feels under pressure because of lack of personal space. M: Did he share more details? W: He says he dare not tell the roommate who disturbs him when he wants to have a quiet environment to do his school work alone or get some sleep. M: Well, it’s difficult to balance everyone’s needs in this situation. Open communication might be the key. W: That’s a good idea. M: Schedule a meeting and everyone in the room has a chance to talk. W: Mm...they can take turns talking about issues like friendship, and try to make the situation better. M: Well, this won’t fix every issue, but may prevent more future problems. Text 8
