A supermarket checkout operator was praised for striking a blow for modern manners and a return to the age of politeness after refusing to serve a shopper who was talking on her mobile phone.

The supermarket manager was forced to apologize to the customer who complained she was told her goods would not be scanned unless she hung up her phone. Jo Clark, 46, said, “I don't know what she was playing at. I couldn’t believe how rude she was. When did she have the right to give me a lecture on checkout manners? I won’t be shopping there again!”

But users of social media sites and Internet forums(论坛) were very angry that store gave in and the public appeared to be supporting the angry checkout worker. “Perhaps this is a turning point for mobile phone users everywhere. When chatting, keep your eyes on people around you. That includes people trying to serve you, other road users and especially people behind you in the stairs,” said a typical post.

“It’s time checkout staff fought back against these people constantly chatting on their phones. They can drive anyone crazy. It’s rude and annoying. I often want to grab someone’s phone and throw it as far as I can, even though I am not a checkout girl, just a passer-by,” said another.

Siobhan Freegard, founder of parenting site www. Netmums.com said, “While this checkout operator doesn’t have the authority to order customers to switch off their phones, you can see clearly how frustrated and angry she felt. No matter how busy you are, life is nicer when you and those around you have good manners.”

24. According to Jo Clark, the checkout operator_____________. A. lacked the knowledge of checkout manners B. played with a mobile phone while at work C. deserved praise for her modern manners

A. whether we should talk on our phones while being served B. why we can talk on mobile phones while shopping C. what good manners checkout operators should have

D. how we can develop good manners for mobile phone users

In order to increase their job chances after college, Chinese students are turning to a special practice—Eiffel Tower nose jobs(鼻整形手术).The latest trend in plastic surgery promises to create a nose that is similar to the curve of the Eiffel Tower.

Surgeon Wang Xuming said: “We are influenced by the beauty of the Eiffel Tower. We are not content to just add something to the nose; we reconstruct it.” The surgery costs about US$ 10,000 and involves the

enlarging of the nose using tissue from the forehead.

Hundreds of posters advertising the procedure are put up all over Chongqing city, where surgeon Xuming runs his private practice. They show a Western-looking woman with an almost-too-perfect nose, against an outline of the Eiffel Tower.

Interestingly, many young women in China are eager to achieve a western appearance, as they believe it will give them an advantage in the highly competitive job market. “Some students face a lot of employment pressure after graduation. If their facial features are good, they’ll have more chances of finding a job,” said surgeon Xuming. “We’ve had students getting the Eiffel Tower nose; it’s helped them a lot.”

Apparently, Chinese employers are quite particular about appearances and prefer attractive candidates. Some of them even go as far as putting height and weight requirements in their employment ads. Plastic surgeons across the country are reporting an increase in the number of students choosing beauty “improvement”.

According to a Mr. Li, hospital manager at surgeon Xuming’s clinic, most of their customers are female and the bill is taken care of by the family. “They usually come in with their mothers, and tend to be from well-off backgrounds.” he said.

Personally, I don’t think it so important to “improve” our appearance as long as we are skilled at our jobs. We can’t decide how we look, but we can decide how well we live and work. 28. Chinese college students choose to have a nose operation to ____________ . A. marry well B. look cool C. have a good job D. look like westerners 29. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 3? A. The posters. B. A nose job.

C. The Eiffel Tower. D. A plastic surgery procedure. 30. It can be inferred from Paragraph 5 that ___________. A. employers are potential customers

B. attractive appearance seems to increase job chances C. appearance is as important as height and weight D. ads promote the plastic surgery

31. From what Mr. Li said we can learn that ____________. A. most families can’t afford the surgeon B. the number of plastic surgeons is increasing C. patients can be well looked after at the clinic

Square dancing is a form of entertainment and physical exercise, which is a good thing. However, a group of senior Chinese ladies dancing in New York’s Sunset Park were recently faced with noise complaints from nearby residents. The local court even served a summons (传票) related to a certain Ms. Wang.

The news soon caused heated discussion across China, with many believing the incident to involve a cultural conflict between the East and West, while others view it as a form of discrimination against Chinese in the United States.
