Soon Tommy‘s parents, who had recently separated, would arrive for a conference on his failing schoolwork and disruptive behavior. Neither parent knew that I had summoned the other.
Tommy, an only child, had always been happy, cooperative, and an excellent student. How could I convince his father and mother that his recent failing grades represented a brokenhearted child's reaction to his adored parents' separation and pending divorce?
Tommy‘s mother entered and took one of the chairs I had placed near my desk. Then the father arrived. They pointedly ignored each other. As I gave a detailed account of Tommy‘s behavior and schoolwork, I prayed for the right words to bring these two together to help them see what they were doing to their son. But somehow the words wouldn't come. Perhaps if they saw one of his smudged, carelessly done papers.

I found a crumpled, tear-stained sheet stuffed in the back of his desk. Writing covered both sides, a single sentence scribbled over and over.
Silently I smoothed it out and gave it to Tommy‘s mother. She read it and then without a word handed it to her husband. He frowned. Then his face softened. He studied the scrawled words for what seemed an eternity.
At last he folded the paper carefully and reached for his wife's outstretched hand. She wiped the tears from her eyes and smiled up at him. My own eyes were brimming, but neither seemed to notice. He helped her with her coat and they left together.
In his own way God had given me the words to reunite that family. He had guided me to the sheet of yellow copy paper covered with the anguished outpouring of a small boy's troubled heart.
The words, ―Dear mother? Dear daddy? I love you? I love you? I love you.‖ 1. Pay attention to the underlined words or phrases. 2. How did Tommy‘s parents feel after seeing the words?

Scientists have found ―significant‖ amounts of water in a crater (火山口) at the moon‘s south pole, a major 1 (discover) that will dramatically revise the description of the moon 2 a dead world and likely make it a more attractive destination for future human space missions.
―The moon is alive,‖ declared Anthony Colaprete, the chief scientist for the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite mission, 3 used a rocket on Oct. 9 to punch a hole about 100 feet across in the moon‘s surface, and then measured about 25 gallons of water in the form of vapor and ice. 4 that‘s not enough to swim in, it could indicate sufficient water in permanently shaded craters at the poles for future astronauts to live off the land.
NASA‘s plans, currently under review by the Obama administration, call for 5 return to the moon at the end of the next decade, and 6 (construct) of a lunar base in which astronauts could live and work for months at a time.
The presence of large quantities of water would make that plan more 7 (practice), since water could be used for drinking, breathing and even making rocket fuel. 8 , a resource-rich moon could also serve as the perfect low-gravity launch-pad (发射台) for missions that would carry astronauts and 9 families elsewhere in the solar system, 10 (realize) the dreams of generations of science-fiction writers.

―If you‘re talking to me in a noisy restaurant and my nervous system is good at locking onto the sound of your voice, I can understand 1 you say better.‖
The research at Northwestern University shows that playing a musical instrument is good
2 your brain. And the brain remembers how to ―lock onto‖ the important sounds, 3 our ears may not work as well as we age, and that helps us to hear better.
A scientist, living in France twenty years ago, 4 (write) about what he called the ―Mozart Effect‖. He said that it could be helpful to the brain when 5 (listen) to the classical music of Mozart. Some researchers said that Mozart‘s music would make you much 6 (smart), or even help your brain cure some health 7 (order). Others said that there was nothing special about Mozart‘s music. Any kind of high energy music would work. So if the cost of a musical instrument or music lessons is too costly, can we get 8 same brain experience just by listening?
Usually people have teachers, or they can teach 9 music. But the point is that they‘re actively playing a musical instrument and engaging 10 making music instead of listening to music passively.
