Spoken Chinese is a tonal language, with four tones in addition to individual sounds. For instance, the word “Ma” can mean “mother,” “bother,” “horse,” or “scold,” depending on how it is said. To help the learning of Chinese, a Romanization system called Pinyin has replaced other earlier Romanized spellings (the capital of China is spelled Beijing instead of the earlier spelling of “Peking”). It was devised in 1958 and has since been taken as a standard form to represent Chinese sounds.
The Chinese writing system is pictographic. This means that a “picture” represents an idea or word. Therefore, the Chinese writing system isn’t the same as that of most western languages. Some Chinese characters were developed as simple pictures from nature, such as animals, birds, mountains, and rivers.
