Once when there was a famine (饥荒), a rich baker sent for twenty of the poorest children in the town, and said to them, “In this basket there is a loaf for each of you. Take it, and come back to me every day at this hour till God sends us better times come.”

The hungry children gathered eagerly around the basket, and quarreled for the bread, because each wished to have the largest loaf. At last they went away without even thanking the good gentleman.

But Gretchen, a poorly-dressed little girl, didn?t quarrel or struggle with the rest, but remained standing modestly in the distance. When the ill-behaved girls had left, she took the smallest loaf, which alone was left in the basket, kissed the gentleman?s hand, and went home.

The next day the children were as ill-behaved as before, and poor, timid Gretchen received a loaf only scarcely half the size of the one she got the first day. When she came home, her mother cut the loaf open, many new, shining pieces of silver fell out of it.

Her mother was very much alarmed, and said, “Take the money back to the good gentleman at once, for it must have got into the dough(生面团)by accident. Be quick, Gretchen! Be quick!”

But when the little girl gave the rich man her mother?s message, he said, “No, no, my child, it was no mistake. I had the silver pieces put into the smallest loaf to reward you. Go home now, and tell your mom that the money is your own.”

A man may usually be known by the books he reads as well as by the company he keeps. One should always live in the best company, whether it be of books or of men.

A good book may be among the best of friends. It will never change. It is the most patient and cheerful of companions. It does not turn its back upon us in times of trouble or pain. It always receives us with the same kindness, amusing and instructing us in youth, and comforting us in age.

Books possess the fundamental features of immortality(不朽). They are by far the most lasting products of human effort. Temples and statues decline, but books survive. Time is of no account with great thought, which are as fresh today as when they first passed through their author?s minds ages ago. The only effect of time has been to clean out the bad products; for nothing in literature can long survive but what is really good.

Books introduce us into the best society: they bring us into the presence of the greatest minds that have ever lived. We hear what they said and did: we see them as if they were really alive; we sympathize with them, enjoy with them, their experience becomes ours, and we feel as if we were actors with them in the scenes which they describe. The great and good do not die even in this world. Living in books, their spirits walk abroad. The book is a living voice, to which one still listens. Hence we ever remain under the influence of the great men of old. 28. According to the text, we can know about a man by_____. A. the books he reads and the movie he watches. B. the company he runs and the books he reads C. the friends he make and the books he reads D. the company he runs and the movies he watches

29. Why does the author say good books may be among the best friends? A. They instruct us in age, and comfort us in youth. B. They own the fundamental features of immortality C. They bring us into the presence of the greatest minds D. They treat us with the same kindness and never betray

30. Which one of the following statements is not related to good books? A. The greatest minds that have ever lived B. The best friends of their authors? real life C. The influence of the great men in history D. The most lasting products of human effort.

Imagine this scene: it?s blowing hard outside, you?re leaning comfortably on the sofa under a warm blanket, chatting with your closest friends.

That feeling has a name in Danish---?hygge?. And, as Denmark recently won the title of ?happiest country in the world?, the rest of the world is becoming more and more interested in finding ways to share this concept.

?Hygge?—originally from a Norwegian word meaning ?happiness?—doesn?t have an exact word in English. It?s often translated as cosiness, or as blogger Anna West told the BBC, “cosiness of the soul.” But, as translator ToveMaren Stakkestad explains: “Hygge was never meant to be translated. It was meant to be felt.”

Actually, Hygge involves creating a warm, cosy atmosphere and enjoying it with your loved ones. Danish winters are long and dark and so achieving ?hygge? is particularly relevant during this season. A typical ?hygge? activity during winter could be, enjoying delicious homemade food and light-hearted conversation with friends--- preferably in the warm glow of candlelight; or maybe sipping a glass of wine after a day spent skiing. However, Hygge isn?t only confined to the cold winter months—it can also describe that warm, vague feeling you get after a walk through a forest with friends on summer?s day or a family barbecue in the park.

The concept of ?hygge? is currently taking the world by storm with more and more people becoming crazy about achieving a state of happiness. Articles, books and stocking gifts, full of tips on the achieve hygge, are hitting the market. Although, some believe this has become a marketing and advertising method, the benefits of staying happy cannot be thought poorly of. So, as the winter nights draw in, instead of hibernating, get into your favourite sweater, bake some cookies and sit by a roaring fire with a good book. And if you can do this with friends and family, even better—hygge is meant to be shared.

32. Why is the word ?hygge? difficult to translate into English? A. It is originally from a Norwegian word. B. It is a feeling and a part of Danish culture C. It contains mysterious code in the concept D. It lacks proper atmosphere in English world.

7

33. Why has the rest of the world become interested in ?hygge?? A. They want to gain the same lifestyle B. They want to earn money from marketing C. They are anxious to get something for nothing D. They are willing to share their life with friends. 34. What can we learn about ?hygge? from the text? A. It is only a lifestyle in the long winter moths B. It means just the comfortable physical environment. C. It largely makes the ordinary special or meaningful D. It can only be experienced in the company of other people. 35. What may be the best title of the text? A. How to live your cosy life. B. How to spend your winter days C. Hygge: the secret to a happy life D. Hygge: the road to wealth

Table manners are the rules used while eating, which may also includes the appropriate use of utensils(餐具). 36 Each family or group sets its own standards for how strictly these rules are to be enforced

In China, seating and serving customs play important roles in Chinese dinning manners. For example, the diners should not sit down or begin to eat before the host or guest of honor has done so. When everyone is seated, the host offers to pour tea, beginning with the cup of the eldest person. 37

Just as in Western cultures, communal(公共的)utensils are used to bring food from dishes to an individual?s own bowl or plate. 38 Other rude behaviors with chopsticks include playing with them, separating them in any way, or standing them in a plate of food. A rice bowl may be lifted with one hand to scoop rice into the mouth with chopsticks. 39 40 When offered the last bit of food, it is considered rude to refuse the offer. It is considered polite for diners not to leave any bit of food on their own plates or bowls A. Traditionally, the host or hostess takes the first bite. B.
