Gift giving is different from culture to culture and person to person.
In China, you must never give a clock to a Chinese person because the sound of the word for “clock” is similar to the sound of “death”. And a knife is not a good gift. Derreck Kayongo is a businessman from an African country. He moved to the USA in the early 1990s. When he first arrived, he stayed at a hotel in Philadelphia. He noticed that the hotel workers put a new bar(块) of soap in his room every morning, even if he had only used the old bar once. The hotel gave each guest a new bar of soap every day and threw away the used bars. Kayongo was surprised to learn that many other hotels in the USA did the same thing.
