Dorje: Being a mountain guide is the only profession for Sherpas as we don't have enough education for other jobs. This is the reason why we climb. We know it's a dangerous job, but we need the money to raise our families and improve our lives.
Yangzi: My father was also a guide for foreigners, but he never succeeded in getting to the top. So the reason I am climbing is to fulfill the dreams of my father, who inspired me. In the past, women were only involved in household activities. Even though I am female, I have the courage to work just like a man.
Panura: I have to perform this dangerous job because of a lack of education. I will educate my child the best way possible, and hope he can find another job. I don't want him to be a guide. I lost my brother to the mountains. Many have lost their lives to accidents. It is just not a safe job.
