Jonathan Cranwell sat on a hard bench behind the long narrow desk and watched the flies fly lazily in the sun. The drone of the younger boys reading letters and the older boys reciting Latin verbs made him sleepy. Jonathan had to force his eyes to stay open. He wanted to learn something new!
He looked up at the schoolmaster’s high desk in the front of the room. The new teacher was from Harvard College. Jonathan’s father had been impressed with him. The boys had already had several other teachers, but none of them seemed to inspire Jonathan. So far, there was nothing to show that this one was special, though he’d only been there two days.
“It’s too hot to sit and memorize lessons,” the schoolmaster said. “We’ll move outdoors for the next part of our lesson.” He led the group of boys into the schoolyard. “You younger boys, dig for grubs and beetles ( 幼虫和甲虫). Count their feet. See if you can describe their shells”
Jonathan watched the teacher surrounded by laughing young students. No one had ever used the schoolyard itself for a classroom. “What next ?” he thought. He didn’t have time to think about the younger boys, for he was running after butterflies and dragonflies himself.
Jonathan and his friends liked this new way of learning.
“It will be a clear night tonight. Go outside and look at the sky,” said the schoolmaster. “Look at the stars and notice their brightness and the patterns they make. These patterns have names from Greek mythology(神话), names like Orion, Aries, and others. Tomorrow we will learn about the ancient stories on them.”
期中测试卷 第1页(共14页) “How is the new schoolmaster ?” asked Jonathan’s father that evening, when Jonathan announced he was going out to look at the sky.
“He’s different from any other schoolmaster we’ve had,” Jonathan admitted. “He seems interested in everything around him, and he wants us to be curious too. He even used the schoolyard as a classroom!”
“So Mr. John Adams and his new ways make school useful to you after all,” joked Jonathan’s father.
“I believe he has,” said Jonathan. “I know I won’t forget the lessons he has taught us!” 1. What does the underlined word “drone” in Paragraph 1 mean ? A. Clear speaking voices B. Continuous low dull sounds C. Enthusiastic responses
D. High spirits
2. Which statement shows that the new schoolmaster understood the children ? A. “Go outside and look at the sky,… ” B. “ See if you can describe their shells.” C. “ It’s too hot to sit and memorize lessons,…” D. “Tomorrow we will learn about the ancient stories…” 3. From the last but one paragraph, we can learn that __________. A. Mr. Cranwell had met the new schoolmaster B. Jonathan had previously complained about school C. Mr. Cranwell was not satisfied with the new ways D. Jonathan had shown his father his homework 4. What is the main idea of this story? A. Science is all around us.
B. School provides us with the best education. C. Homework is an important part of education.
D. There is more than one way to learn.

For the business traveler who is all about efficiency: Check out these hotels that will get you in and out with a minimum of trouble. When you are pressed for time on a business trip, nothing can infuriate you more than a slow hotel check-in process. On your next trip, try these hotels that offer a speedier check-in process.
1. Yotel New York
The self-service kiosks at this high-tech New York hotel work just like the ones you’d see at an airport.
期中测试卷 第2页(共14页)
There are just five-steps to register and obtain your card key. There is even a robotic luggage bellboy. You tap in the number of bags you are carrying and sizes, then wait for a robot arm to swing down and store your luggage in a locker (say, for a day trip). This also speeds up the check-in process if the first thing you need to do, like me, is head to a series of meetings.
2. Marriott Detroit Airport
Another option for business travelers in a hurry: Marriott is rolling out its mobile check-in app to 325 hotels this year, including the Marriott Detroit Airport hotel. (I’ve tested the app itself but not for a real visit quite yet.) Here is the basic idea: you download the iphone or Android app. The night before, you can “check-in” virtually. When you arrive, you get an alert that the room is ready and your key, which is already tied to your reservation, is waiting for you at the desk.
3. Hyatt Regency Minneapolis
I happened to stay at this hotel recently and liked how fast the kiosk check-in works. Like the Yotel, the kiosk asks you to insert your credit card, similar to an airport terminal. The whole process took about three minutes, when I left, I was equally impressed with the fast check-out. An agent meets you in the lobby with an ipad and asks for an email to use for a receipt. The big advantage: you never have to wait in line.
4. Radisson: LaCrosse
The Radisson is trying to make the kiosk process even faster, at a few select hotels like the Radisson Lacrosse in Wisconsin, you use a mobile app to register and then receive a barcode by email or text. When you get to the kiosk, you scan the barcode to get your key without any other steps required. It’s super fast. You can find this new check-in system at the Radisson hotels in Salt Lake City, Seattle, and Phoenix as well.
5.Which two hotels offer a mobile app for customers to check in? A. Yotel New York and Marriott Detroit Airport. B. Marriott Detroit Airport and Radisson: LaCrosse. C. Marriott Detroit Airport. and Hyatt Regency Minneapolis. D. Hyatt Regency Minneapolis and Radisson: LaCrosse. 6.Which hotel will send you a receipt by email?
A. Yotel New York. B. Marriott Detroit Airport. C. Radisson: LaCrosse. D. Hyatt Regency Minneapolis. 7.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. At Yotel New York, a robot will help you with all the check-in process.
期中测试卷 第3页(共14页) B. With its check-in app, you may enter your room in Marriott without a key. C. The barcode you receive from Radisson contributes to the fast check-in. D. Hyatt Regency Minneapolis is close to an airport terminal.

You may think, salt is just a simple cooking element we shake on our food for a little extra taste. But salt is much more than that. Without salt our muscles would not move. Our nervous systems would not operate. Our hearts would not beat.
But do not think rubbing salt into a wound will help. Doing that would be painful and not heal the wound. “To rub salt into a wound” is an idiom that means to purposefully make a bad situation worse.
Early humans got the salt they needed to stay alive from the animals they killed. But advances in agriculture led to a diet low in salt. So, humans needed to find other sources. Those who lived near the ocean or other natural sources for salt were lucky. Those who did not had to trade for salt. In fact, people used salt as a method of payment in many parts of the ancient world. The word “salary” comes from the word “salt”.
Salt also played an important part in population movement and world exploration. Explorers understood that if they could keep food fresh, they could travel longer distances. So they used salt to preserve food and explore the world.
Salt was so important that, according to food historians, it was traded pound-for-pound for gold. Today, people still use the expressions “worth one's salt” or “worth one's weight in salt”. The expressions describe a person of value.
A person might also be called “salt of the earth”. That description means he or she is dependable and trustworthy. However, when you say “I think we should take what he said with a grain of salt”you mean you accept it but maintain a degree of doubt about its truth.
8. What can we learn from the first paragraph? A. Salt plays an important part in our life.
B. Salt makes food tasty.
C. Salt is considered to be part of our muscles.
D. Salt is sure to damage nervous systems.
9. A beggar’s bread was stolen last night, which means_________. A. salt of the earth
B. rubbing salt in a wound C. a diet low in salt
D. worth his salt
10. If you describe a person as a great help, you mean_________ . A. he rubs salt in a wound
B. he is often taken as a grain of salt
期中测试卷 第4页(共14页)
C. he often uses salt to preserve meat D. he is worth his weight in salt 11. Which of the following is the best title for the passage? A. Salt Is More Than a Four-letter Word.
B. Salt Is a Basic Element in Cooking. C. Salt Is a Word with a Long History.
D. Salt Is Popular with Different People.

A new study has discovered that meditation(冥想)and oxygen sport together reduce depression. The Rutgers University study found that this mind and body combination, done twice a week for only two months, reduced the symptoms for a group of students by 40 percent.
“We are excited by the findings because we saw such a meaningful improvement in both clinically depressed and non-depressed students,” said lead author Dr. Brandon Alderman. “It is the first time that both of these two behavioral ways have been looked at together for dealing with depression.”
Researchers believe the two activities have an interactive effect on combating depression. Alderman and Dr. Tracey Shors discovered that a combination of mental and physical training (MAP) enabled students with major depressive disorder not to let problems or negative thoughts defeat them.
Rutgers researchers say those who participated in the study began with 30 minutes of focused attention meditation followed by 30 minutes of oxygen sport. They were told that if their thoughts drifted to the past or the future they should refocus on their breathing, enabling those with depression to accept moment-to-moment changes in attention.
Shors, who studies the production of new brain cells in the hippocampus—part of the brain involved in memory and learning—says scientists have shown in animal models that oxygen sport exercise keeps a large number of certain cells alive.
The idea for the human intervention(干预)came from her laboratory studies, she says, with the main goal of helping individuals acquire new skills so that they can learn to recover from stressful life events.
By learning to focus their attention and exercise, people who are fighting depression can acquire new learning skills that can help them process information and reduce the overwhelming recollection of memories from the past, Shors says.
期中测试卷 第5页(共14页) “We know these treatments can be practiced over a lifetime and that they will be effective in improving mental health.” said Alderman. “The good news is that this intervention can be practiced by anyone at any time and at no cost.”
12. What made the research so different? A. Adopting a way of meaningful talk.
B. Combining the two behavioral ways to treat depression. C. Treating depression with special medicine. D. Comparing the depressed with the non-depressed.
13. The underlined word “combating” in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by ______. A. fighting B. identifying
C. distinguishing
D. examining
14. What did the participants do in the research? A. They did oxygen sport half an hour before thinking. B. They thought quietly and then took exercise. C. They took exercise longer than they thought. D. They took exercise while thinking quietly. 15. What is Shors’ main purpose of her studies? A. To find out certain brain cells of humans. B. To study the production of new brain cells. C. To offer people a new method to treat stress. D. To decide the links between stress and exercise.

How can I fight laziness?
Lazy people will never amount to anything in life. However, laziness can be defeated once a few changes have been made in your mind.
期中测试卷 第6页(共14页)
__16__Many people lack sleep constantly, since they stay up too late and get up too early to prepare for work. These people have little motivation once they arrive home. Laziness works hand in hand with a lack of motivation and a tendency to put off things. By adjusting your sleep schedule to provide a few more hours of meaningful rest, you can fight laziness throughout the day.
Another way to fight laziness is to change your mind from passive to active. Some people treat their lives as if they were pushed from task to task. Others take a more proactive approach, viewing each task as a challenge they must overcome alone. ___17____
Some people fight laziness by removing the temptations that surround them. A television in the living room may provide entertainment, but watching too much TV often contributes to laziness. Create a reward system for yourself, just as parents do for a child to promote responsibility. ___18____

阅读下面短文, 从短文后所给各题的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白的最佳选项。
A couple of weeks ago, when we were leaving one of those horrible giant trampoline bouncy(弹跳床)places, my 11-year-old daughter said to me, “I don’t think I’m very 21 . You know, like Rocket (her brother). He seems to be really good at sports.”
What came out of my mouth 22 me: “No, you’re kind of not.”
Okay, let me back up. As you may have guessed, this child has been with me for about 11 years, 23 I’ve had enough time to 24 her engaged in physical acts: jumping, climbing, running, and organized sports.
And the kid is just 25 me: two left feet. If anybody was ever NOT a “natural” 26 , that person is me. But even 27 these facts, my first instinct(本能反应)was to snow her with some 28 : “Oh, no, honey. You’re good at sports! You just have to keep 29 !” But I decided to tell her the 30 , and I could see it hurt a bit. So I said more: “Ava, we all have things we are particularly, 31 good at. Like you and 32 . You’re in the 5th grade and read Charles Dickens. That isn’t 33 , but you’ve done it without even trying. But all of us also have things that we are 34 in. If we want to get good at those things, we have to put in twice the 35 of the people around us to get to a decent(相当的)point and even harder if we want to be 36 .”
She was nodding. She totally 37 it. Why? Because it’s the truth. Sometimes I wonder why we run around talking nonsense(胡扯)to our kids when they can 38 the truth. And they can smell rubbish from a mile away. In other words, they can easily recognize you are 39 . In addition, if they don’t know where they 40 now, they’ll never know how to get somewhere new.
