This is the difference in teaching styles between the East and the West. In China, there is a tradition that students are required to clean their schools from the first grade through high school. Their cleaning duties include floor dusting, cleaning the hallways and moving the desks.
As my teacher explained we were asked to do so to encourage respect for the school environment and more importantly, to learn how to be a part of society and develop concern about collective(集体的) interests.

However, requiring students to clean at school is a foreign idea in many foreign countries. The argument is that the purpose of school is to educate, not to use child labor.
I can’t say which side is right or wrong. But speaking from my own experience, it was not all that bad.
Let me take you back to the 1990s. When I was in middle school, we were required to take turns to clean up the classroom after school. We were called “zhirisheng”, which was translated into student on duty. I liked it. It made me feel like I was old enough to take some responsibility.
