It also fosters the ability to be creative and constructive — to generate possible explanations for findings, think of implications, and apply new knowledge to a broad range of social and personal problems. You can't really separate critical thinking from creative thinking, for it's only when you question what is that you can begin to imagine what can be.\文档收集自网络,仅用于个人学习 Nor is being an independent thinker and a critical thinker merely being \Tavris point out, \

The Oxford Dictionary offers many definitions of independent, including \of others\words. But what does that really mean? Does it mean forming an opinion without input from others? No, of course not, otherwise we \information and data on which to base our opinions. It's the way that we seek information and how we apply it that makes us dependent or independent thinkers. If we uncritically accept whatever values or ideas we've been taught by parents, teachers or church, never questioning these ideas or asking ourselves if these ideas really make sense, then we are dependent thinkers (even if the ideas are true!). 文档收集自网络,仅用于个人学习 If we reject what our parents, teachers or church have taught us simply because they say something is right, does that make us independent thinkers? No, that's just what psychologists call \反对一致)\文档收集自网络,仅用于个人学习 Independent thinking means making sense of the world based on your own observations and experiences rather than just depending on the word of others. even if you sometimes make mistakes. An independent thinker knows it's psychologically better to make your own mistakes than someone else's. 文档收集自网络,仅用于个人学习 Independent thinking is not necessarily sensible or critical. Passage Four

To non-critical readers, texts provide facts. Readers gain knowledge by memorizing the statements within a text. 文档收集自网络,仅用于个人学习 6 / 12

To the critical reader, any single text provides but one portrayal of the facts on the subject matter. Critical readers thus recognize not only what a text says, but also how that text portrays the subject matter. They recognize the various ways in which each text is the unique creation of a unique author. 文档收集自网络,仅用于个人学习 Non-critical reading is satisfied with recognizing what a text says and restating the key remarks.文档收集自网络,仅用于个人学习 Critical reading goes two steps further. Having recognized what a text says, it reflects on what the text does by making such remarks. Is it offering examples? Arguing? Making a contrast to clarify a point? Finally, critical readers then infer what the text, as a whole, means , based on the earlier analysis. 文档收集自网络,仅用于个人学习 Textbooks on critical reading commonly ask students to accomplish certain goals: 文档收集自网络,仅用于个人学习 ● to recognize an author's purpose

● to understand tone and persuasive elements ● to recognize bias

Notice that none of these goals actually refers to something on the page. Each requires inferences from evidence within the text: 文档收集自网络,仅用于个人学习 ● recognizing purpose involves inferring a basis for choices of content and language 文档收集自网络,仅用于个人学习 ● recognizing tone and persuasive elements involves classifying the nature of language choices 文档收集自网络,仅用于个人学习 ● recognizing bias involves classifying the nature of patterns of choice of content and language文档收集自网络,仅用于个人学习 Critical reading is not simply close and careful reading. Critical reading thus relies on an examination of those choices that any and all authors must make when framing a presentation: choices of content, language, and structure. Readers examine each of the three areas of choice, and consider their effect on the meaning.文档收集自网络,仅用于个人学习 36. Non-critical readers can __________. [C] to see how the facts contribute to the development of the topic文档收集自网络,仅用于个人学习 [D] to evaluate the ways the author uniquely creates the facts文档收集自网络,仅用于个人学习
