College Graduates Work as Village Officials

In recent years being a village official has become the first choice of many college students when they graduate and are trying to find a job. According to a report carried by The Chinese Education Daily the number of students who apply for the post increases at the annual rate of 20 percent in recent five years, which well justifies the popularity of becoming a village official among college students.

Several factors may account for this popularity. First, it is the fierce competition of job market that forces the college graduates to consider other alternatives other than staying in the big cities as they used to. Secondly, to encourage well-educated young talents to work in the rural areas, the government authorities have made some policies offering major incentives to college graduates who are willing to work for rural governments at grassroots level, especially for village committees. For example, those who work for a rural committee for at least three years after graduation can get a 10-point credit in their exams to enter graduate schools. The preferential treatment is appealing to many students. Last but not least, many students consider working as a village official is a rewarding opportunity. It will acquaint themselves with the very society of our country as well as improve their adaptability to different circumstances, both of which are believed to be beneficial to their future career.

In my opinion, college students working as a village official is worth promoting. It is possible that some graduates may use the job as “spring boards”: only applying for it in order to receive the favorable treatment, but the majority of them genuinely hope to serve the rural areas and better the life of the villagers. With the participation of so many college graduates, we have reasons to believe that it will not take too long to realize the blueprint of Constructing New Village.

Should Family Schooling Exist?

Several years ago, Meng Mu Tang, a family school, was established in Shanghai to embrace the renaissance of traditional Chinese culture and enrolled 12 students. But it was soon ordered to stop operation by the Shanghai education authorities although parents of the students are happy with the schooling.

Although the family schooling existed for a very short time, it has generated huge debate. Those who support the practice think education should be free and parents have the right to choose what they think is proper for their kids. Most important of all, students should be educated in accordance with their interests and aptitude, so there should be various education models. While those who say ―no‖ to private schools hold that education must be compiled with education law. Meng Mu Tang has gone beyond the supervision of the education law and its curriculum and quality cannot be guaranteed. Since the students who study there cannot get the formal primary diploma, how can they enter the normal senior and junior school?

So far as I am concerned, the education authorities should encourage such kind of schooling. Truly, there exist some problems if students choose to study here, but what we should do is go to great lengths to solve them, instead of stopping its operation. Education in China calls for immediate reform and family schooling can be operated as a model. Unit Three

An Analysis of the Social Crimes in City A

The table above shows the number of incidents with a range of social crimes in City A over a 3-year period, from 2003 to 2005. The types of the social crimes include serious assault, robbery, sexual assault, breaking into homes, theft of a motor vehicle, fraud and vandalism.

From the table, it can be seen that the total number of incidents increases from 290 in 2003 to 319 in 2005. Among the seven social crimes, there is a steady growth in robbery (28 in 2003, 34 in 2004, and 38 in 2005), breaking into homes (16 in 2003, 20 in 2004, and 27 in 2005), and theft of a motor vehicle (24 in 2003, 27 in 2004, and 32 in 2005). There is no significant change in the other areas, and the numbers remain at the same level.

Social problems can be reflected from the increasing numbers. In order to prevent the situation from becoming worse and to keep a stable social system, all sides concerned must find an efficient way to cope with it. The authorities related should improve the system and carry out regulations more strictly. Meanwhile, ordinary citizens should abide by laws and regulations.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I learned from Beijing Youth Daily Oct. 2 that your company is offering a position for a secretary, and it's a great pleasure for me to write to explore the possibility of seeking the job.

I graduated two years ago from Beijing University of Technology, and obtained a bachelor's degree in the field of business management. During my stay in the university my major courses included macro-economics, business communication skills, marketing and computer applications. I was especially fond of the communication skills which enabled me to deal with people and things around well.

Upon graduation I engaged with HP China Branch as an assistant to the head of Marketing Department. My responsibilities consisted of carrying out market surveys, writing reports and organizing meetings within the department. This two-year experience has helped me a lot in many ways. In particular, I become increasingly aware of the importance of co-ordination and co-operation among co-workers. I also believe the experience will qualify me for the current vacancy in your company.

I passed both CET-4 and CET-6 with high marks. My spoken English is also fluent enough to organize meetings in English, which was actually my routine work in HP. Most of my market reports were presented in English, as my former boss is a native English speaker

I enclose herein my resume and some relevant documents as required. And if you need any further information on me, I also refer you to Mr. Johnson, my ex-colleague, who is available at 021-66668888.

I appreciate your sincere consideration of me, and am looking forward to an early interview with you.

Sincerely yours,

Wang Peng

Volunteer teaching in the west

Every year, college students are inspired to help students with their study in underdeveloped areas in china. They have been trying their best to impart knowledge and offering help to those students who are so eager to learn.

This volunteer practice has been beneficial in two aspects. On one hand, college volunteers are really devoted to the cause. They have opened the eyes of students in underdeveloped regions to the outside world by bringing them new knowledge and thoughts. As a result, they are extremely welcome and respected by the children there. On the other hand, college students have received a rigorous training by adapting to the harsh living conditions. They are learning how to deal with difficulties and face challenges as well. What’s more, by any means, this volunteer experience will be always a valuable asset in his or her life.

In my opinion, every Chinese citizen is responsible for the development of education in china. And we college students should take the lead in response to the appeal for offering aid to children in poor areas.

College Students’Living Condition

Recently, the living condition of some college students is frequently referred to as ―dwelling-narrowness‖. In fact, this embarrassing situation is very serious that few of us can fail to meditate on the causes of it.

In the first place, it’s difficult for graduates to bear the high cost of life in big cities. Poor payment thus gives rise to bad living conditions. Next, college students are more ambitious. Many of them are eager to compete in big cities like Shanghai and Beijing, where talents are abundant

and positions are limited. Refusing to go back hometown let them suffer in big cities, which indirectly make their situation worse.

Generally speaking, college students should be more qualified to better themselves and adjust their goals according to the reality.

The Ecological Crisis on the Booming Tourism

Tourism is one of the most promising industries in the 21st century. According to some statistics, tourism comprises more than 5% of China’s GDP and creates millions of jobs each year. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why tourism is greatly promoted in China. In addition to the driving force in GDP growth, another reason for the boost of tourism is that people have more holidays. For instance, during the Labor Day or National Day holiday week, people prefer to experience various lives and get out of the daily life routine. Furthermore, they can afford it.

Traveling is many people’s favorite recreation. It enables us not only to broaden our horizons, but also to shape our mind and spirits. However, just like a coin with two sides, tourism causes a serious problem— ecological crisis. The environment has been suffering with the boom of tourism. In order to attract tourists, many places have been turned into resorts. Forests are cleared, prairies (大草原) are destroyed, rivers and lakes are polluted, and wild animals are driven away.

These horrible scenes should sound an alarm to us. We must protect our eco-environment while enjoying the beautiful scenery. In order to keep a balance between tourism and ecology, the concept of eco-tourism, which intends to bring people closer to nature with as little disturbance as possible, should be advocated. In the development of this new form of traveling, governments at all levels should play their positive roles such as funding environmental programs and limiting excessive exploitation of natural resources. What we need to do is simple: do not litter; strictly observe regulations at resorts, and use as few plastic bags and boxes as possible. At last, we should keep in mind that when we travel we should take away nothing but memories and leave nothing but footprints.
