A Letter to the President
Dear President,
Last month, our Student’s Union conducted a survey about students’ need in English
learning. The students in our university took an active part in this survey and wrote down them their need. Here are some main points.
About 50% of the students think that the optional courses in English cannot satisfy their
need. They want to improve their English, but they have too limited a choice. Nearly 80% of the students feel that it is urgent to arrange for some teachers to solve their problems in English learning because they find it hard to get in touch with English teachers after they finish the required courses. Approximately half the students consider it very important to enrich the extracurricular activities. They think if will be much better if more foreign teachers participate in such kind of activities.
We Students’ Union deem it vital to create a good environment and learn English well so
as to get well prepared for the future, and really hope that the top leaders in our university will promptly set out to solve the above-mentioned problems.

On Power Failure
Recently, every morning when I wake up, I find my air-conditioner automatically turned off. I didn’t understand why at first, but soon I learned that there was a great shortage of electricity supply in our city – my air-conditioner turned off because of a power failure midnight.
With the rapidly developing industry and the ever-increasing population, demand for electricity supply is soaring. Besides, summers in recent years are much hotter than before, so most working places and households are air-conditioned , which consumes additional electricity.
Face with such a hard nut, we have to find ways to crack it. Above all, in western areas China, there is surplus of electricity supply. So, cities that are thirsty for electricity may ask for remote
help. Then, when we have electricity, we should remember to save it. Set your air-conditioners at 27C and you won’t feel less comfortable than when they are at 26C. In fact, some factories already shift their working hours to avoid the peak time of electricity consuming. My parents don’t work from Monday to Friday as before – they work form Saturday to Wednesday and have the following two days off instead. This is also a way out, isn’t it?

How to Be a Good Student?
Different people have different opinions about how to be a good student. As for me, a good student should be measured in terms of at least three basic qualities.
First, a good student should have the virtues of honesty, kindness, and a sense of responsibility. These virtues are indispensable even in such a materialistic society. Without these virtues, our society would be in terrible disorder. Second, a good student should diligent in his study. As the proverb goes, ―There is no royal road to learning.‖ All people of great accomplishments are known for their diligence. Third, good health is essential for a good student. Anyone without good health can hardly achieve anything great even if he is intelligent.
In brief, a good student should possess the above three qualities no matter how the criteria are changing.
