2012年5月14日奥巴马参加哥伦比亚大学巴纳德女子学院毕业典礼并发表演讲，奥巴马1983年毕业于哥伦比亚大学，巧合的是哥伦比亚大学也是在1983年开始招生女学生。奥巴马在演讲中鼓励女性为公共事业服务，主动争取自身的权利，并从自己及Michelle的经历鼓励毕业生在对待困难及挑战面前锲而不舍！ 奥巴马给年轻女大学生的三条建议：

#1：Don’t just get involved. Fight for your seat at the table. Better yet, fight for a seat at the head of the table.

#2：Never underestimate the power of your example. #3：Persevere. Persevere

There are so many people who are proud of you -- your parents, family, faculty, friends -- all who share in this achievement. So please give them a big round of applause. (Applause.) To all the moms who are here today, you could not ask for a better Mother’s Day gift than to see all of these folks graduate. (Applause.)
