Nicolas Anelka arrived in Shanghai last month to begin playing for Shanghai Shenhua in the Chinese Super League (中超联赛,缩写为CSL). Anelka is French and played for France’s national team as well as for Chelsea (英超切尔西队) in England. He is the biggest and the latest of a growing number of foreign stars that have come to play professional sports in China.

At the beginning of this season, the Chinese Basketball Association had several NBA players in the league including Wilson Chandler (威尔逊·钱德勒) and Kenyon Martin (肯扬·马丁). These players came to China because of the NBA lockout(停摆) last September. They wanted to

play basketball and they were able to get the same salary here as they would have in the NBA. However, most of them left China when the NBA season started again.

The CSL and the CBA are happy to welcome these players and to pay them big salaries because both sports leagues have had trouble keeping their fan base. The CSL has lost many fans because of past match fixing scandals(打假球丑闻) and the CBA has suffered by comparison with the NBA—it’s just not as exciting.

China’s professional sports teams have a long way to go if they are going to match the quality of play seen in other countries. Bringing in top foreign athletes is a way for Chinese athletes to learn and to improve. And it’s hoped that the big names will fill the seats in China’s stadiums and arenas.

More foreign athletes, such as Anelka, are also discovering that China is a great place to spend part of their careers. The money is good, but they also like the country and its culture. Anelka, for one, says he is ―delighted‖ to be here. I think Shanghai is delighted to have him. 55. Nicolas Anelka, as a famous football player, once played for _______. A. Shanghai Shenhua and Chelsea B. Chelsea and France’s national team

C. Shanghai Shenhua and France’s national team D. All of the above

56. Wilson Chandler and Kenyon Martin came to China ______. A. when the NBA season started again B. last month

C. at the beginning of this season D. last September

57. The possible reason why NBA players left China is because _______. A. The CBA is not very happy to welcome the players.

B. The CBA refuses to pay the players the same salary as they’ve expected. C. In fact, the CBA isn’t as exciting as the NBA.

D. The players have lost their interest in playing basketball. 58. The underlined part can be replaced(代替) by ______. A. foreign stars B. great people

C. Nicolas Anelka is delighted to spend the rest of his career in Shanghai. D. Past match fixing scandals have made the CBA lose many fans. 60. What is the best title for the passage? A. Nicolas Anelka, Welcome to Shanghai. B. Famous People in Shanghai.

C. Shanghai Attracts More Foreign Athletes. D. How to Solve the Problems of Chinese Sports.

B. Choose the words or expressions and complete the passage. (6分)

The woman in the apartment upstairs plays her piano after midnight.

The family across the street never 61 their yard. The garbage blows into your yard. The guy next door always parks his car in front of your driveway.

Have things like this ever happened to you? If so, you may ask __62__, ―Who are these people? Why are they doing these things to me?‖

These days, many people don’t know their neighbors. Sometimes we share a __63__ wave or say hello, but a lot of people don’t even know their neighbor’s names! When you don’t know

someone, it’s easy to build up frustration (挫折)and resentment(怨恨). You think, ―Maybe they like to annoy me,‖ or ―Maybe they do it deliberately(故意地).‖

Believe it or not , your neighbors probably don’t mean to irritate you. Often, they don’t even know that they’re getting on your nerves. __64__, before you take extreme measures to fix the problem, you should discuss it with them first.

When you approach you neighbors, you should talk to them in a friendly manner.
