Computer spell checks have created an ―auto-correct generation‖ unable to spell common words such as ―necessary‖ and ―separate‖, a survey has found.

Only one in five adults out of 2,000 who took a short spelling test were able to answer all five questions c__67__.

Sixty-five percent f__68__ to spell ―necessary‖ while 33 percent struggled with (挣扎) ―definitely‖ and ―separate‖.

Respondents (被访者) also admitted using computer spell checks and auto-correct

Despite this (尽管如此), Britons rate themselves as competent (有能力的) spellers, with 76 percent describing their spelling abilities as ―very good‖ or ―fairly good‖. Almost all those questioned believed spelling was i__70__.

Students emerged (暴露) as the w__71__ spellers, with only 13 percent getting all five questions in the test correct. Women were better at spelling than men, with women aged 65 and over scoring the highest marks.

Mark Goldring, chief executive of a learning disabilities charity (学习障碍慈善团体),said, ―W__72__ over two-thirds of Britons now having to rely on spell checks, we are heading towards an auto-correct generation.‖

This s__73__ has highlighted (使…显得突出) that many Britons have a false impression about their spelling ability. This is why Britain is planning to start a grammar, punctuation and spelling test for students as young as 11 years old.
