SECTION 1: LISTENING TEST (30 minutes) Part A: Spot Dictation

Directions: In this part of the test, you will hear a passage and read the same passage with blanks in it. Fill in each of the blanks with the word or words you have heard on the tape. Write your answer in the corresponding space in your ANSWER BOOKLET. Remember you will hear the passage ONLY ONCE.

Today, we'll talk about what other effects watching TV might produce on children. Children should be ____ discouraged from watching ___ (1) a lot of television, many experts and parents agree, but there is at least one circumstance when it might be beneficial: ___ muting pain ____ (2). A recent study conducted by Italian researchers found that children ____ who viewed cartoons ___ (3) immediately preceding and during blood tests experienced less pain than children whose mothers ____ attempted to distract them ___ (4) during the procedure, or children whose mothers were present but ___ did not interact with them ____ (5).

The research, led by Carlo Brown, MD, at the University of Siena, is published in the Archives of Disease in Childhood, ____69 children participated in ___ (6) the study. None received any type of anesthesia; the children and their mothers ___ determined their pain scores ___ (7).

Both the group whose mothers attempted to distract them from the blood tests and those whose mothers simply observed reported ____ substantially higher pain ratings ___ (8) than the group who watched cartoons. For that group, the levels of pain were less and the children were better able to ____ tolerate the pain they did experience ___ (9).

One of the possible explanations is that children might have ____ picked up on their mother’s anxiety ___ (10) during the procedures, exacerbating their perception of pain. \higher pain level reported by children during ___ mother’s efforts at distraction ____ (11) shows the difficulty mothers have in interacting positively ____ at a difficult moment ___ (12) in their children's life,\

However, they stressed that ___ the mother’s presence ____ (13) still provided benefits, noting that the children would ___ appreciate not being left alone ____ (14) during the procedures. \children state that having their parent present ____ provides the most comfort ___ (15) when in pain,\

Another possibility offered for consideration is the notion that the ____ pleasure of watching TV ___ (16) might release pain-quelling endorphins. Endorphins, ___ biological compounds ____ (17) produced by the pituitary gland, resemble opiates in their ability to produce analgesia and a sense of well-being. In other words, they might ___ function as natural pain killers ____ (18).

In any case, the study results suggest that health workers should ____ consider allowing children ___ (19) to watch television during painful procedures ___ to minimize their distress ____ (20).

学会“舍得”(give and take)

2. 错字。例如说2000年3月的第1题most prestigious(最有名望的)中,很多考生由于在考场上太过紧张而忘记prestigious(有名望的)是怎么拼写的。

4. 复数。例如2000年3月第14题among thousands of applicants(在数以千计的申请人中)的applicant(申请人)需要使用复数形式。 *
