1“from where...”结构的功能

We walked for two and a half hours to get there—first up a mountain to a ridge from where we had fantastic views and then down a steep path to the valley below.(教材P29)

我们步行了两个半小时才到达那里——先是爬山,爬到山脊时能看到奇妙的景色,然后下一个陡坡,一直走到下边的山谷。

【句式点拨】

句中from where引导的定语从句修饰a ridge;在“介词+关系词”型定语从句中,关系词常为which和whom,关系副词where和when之前一般不加介词,比较特殊的有from where和since when。

from where主要有以下两种用法:

(1)相当于 and from there(从那儿),用于引导非限制性定语从句。如: ①He hid himself in a tree, from where he could see the enemy in the distance. 他躲在一棵树上,从那儿他可以看到远处的敌人。

(2)相当于from the place where,可视为where前省略了the place,意思是“从……的地方,离……的地方”。如:

②From where I stood I could see everything clearly. 从我站的地方可以将一切都看得清清楚楚。

③I have bought that house, and from there I can enjoy the beautiful scene of Yangpu Bridge. =I have bought that house, from where I can enjoy the beautiful scene of Yangpu Bridge. 我买下了那幢房屋,从那里我可以欣赏到杨浦大桥的美丽风光。

④I made the acquaintance of Mr Stephen, and since then we have kept in touch and shared a lot concerning cloning technology.

=I made the acquaintance of Mr Stephen, since when we have kept in touch and shared a lot concerning cloning technology.

your loved one keeps是定语从句,修饰先行词something;who really need it也是定语从句,修饰先行词people。主句的表语有两个,即something和a voluntary contribution,并由not...but...连接,意为“不是……,而是……”。not...but...连接两个平行成分,当连接两个主语时,谓语动词的单复数按照“就近一致”的原则确定。

①It is not how much we do but how much love we put into what we do that benefits our work most. 能给我们工作带来最大益处的不是我们做了多少,而是我们对于自己所做的事情付出了多少爱。 ②It is not the tools a scientist uses but how he uses these tools that makes him a scientist. 能使一个人成为科学家的不是这些工具,而是他使用这些工具的方法。 ③Not you but she is_wanted(want) on the telephone. 电话里那人找的是她而不是你。

【提示】 not only...but (also)..., either...or..., neither...nor...连接两个主语时,谓语动词的数按“就近一致”原则确定;as well as连接主语时,谓语动词的数按“就前一致”原则确定。

My time working on a farm was a new experience for me. It was basically a free holiday as food and accommodation were provided. However, it was not your typical holiday as I had to look after fifteen horses and sleep at the top of a tower in a castle! I was an awful farmer but it did not matter because I made some great friends.
