第二部分 阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

21.(6分)It is a question people have been asking for ages. Is there a way to turn back the aging process?

For centuries, people have been looking for a “fountain of youth.” The idea is that if you find a magical fountain, and drink from its waters, you will not age. Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon searched for waters with magical powers in the early 1500s. But what he found instead is the American state of Florida.

Researchers in New York did not find an actual fountain of youth, but they may have found a way to turn back the aging process. It appears the answer may be hidden right between your eyes, in an area called the hypothalamus.

The hypothalamus is part of your brain. It controls important activities within the body. Cai Dongsheng, a professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, found that hypothalamus stem cells influence how fast aging takes place in the body as well. He also reported that when the hypothalamus starts aging, so does the body.

“So when hypothalamus function is in decline, particularly the loss of hypothalamus stem cells, and this protection against the aging development is lost, it eventually leads to aging.”

Using this information, the researchers began trying to activate (激活) or energize the hypothalamus in laboratory mice. They did this by injecting (注射) the animals with stem cells. Later, the researchers examined tissues and tested for changes in behavior. They looked for changes in the strength of the animals’ muscles. They also studied the social behavior and cognitive (认知) ability of the mice.

The researchers say the results show that the treatment slowed aging in the animals. Cai says injecting middle-aged mice with stem cells from younger mice helped the older animals live longer.

These findings could lead to new ways to help doctors identify and treat any number of health issues concerning aging problems. If the mice can live longer, does that mean people could have longer lives? This is the question Cai and his team are thinking about. 1、What did Juan Ponce de Leon find? A.The American state of Florida. B.Magical powers. C.A Fountain of youth.

D.A way to stop the aging process.

2、What do we know about the hypothalamus? A.It is located in the eyes.

B.It starts aging due to the increase of its stem cells. C.It plays a key role in controlling the aging process. D.It functions well when the body starts aging. 3、What did the researchers do during the experiment? A.They strengthened the muscles of the mice.

B.They examined tissues and tested the behaviour of mice. C.They injected the stem cells into the younger mice.

D.They changed the social behavior and cognitive ability of the mice. 4、What would the researchers probably do next? A.Inject stem cells of mice into humans. B.Research on the cognitive psychology. C.Help the mice live longer.

D.See if anti-aging effects also work in human beings.

23.(8分) Each time Chinese New Year is approaching, preparations are underway around the

world. Here are some Chinatowns for those outside of China wishing to mark the day.

London

Although it may not be as large or as long-built as others, having only become a center for the Chinese community during the 1950s, London’s Chinatown is perfectly formed little firework that knows how to see in the year with a bang. Decorated with red lanterns, previous years have seen shows with acrobatics, (杂技)martial arts(武术),dance and opera nearby.

San Francisco

San Francisco’s Chinatown is perhaps the most famous in the United States. The city was the main entry-point for Chinese who had crossed the Pacific to the USA during the early 19th century. Between the Grant Avenue and the Stockton Street, this historic area is a local treasure, attracting more visitors per year than the Golden Gate Bridge.

Bangkok

With an about100-year-old history, the Thai capital’s Chinatown contains complex streets offering all kinds of tasty treats, clothes, toys and antiques. Sunday market days are such a good time to get the full atmosphere of the neighborhood. The area is also known for its gold dealers, whose shops line the road.

Mauritius

Found in Port Louis, this Mauritian Chinatown shows the island nation’s rich multicultural diversity. Established in the early years of the 20th century by settlers from China, its tiny shops and restaurants serve locals and visitors. During the Chinese Spring Festival, the most exciting sight is the Dragon Dances on Rue Royale when Chinese musicians and dancers perform the traditional lion dances through the streets.

24.(8分)Human brains begin growing and developing at a very young age. They learn from the simplest experiences, which enable your children to be aware of the world. There’s no denying that outdoor play helps a lot!

Times when children have to wait for their turns on playground equipment and following the playground rules by sharing, all these form components of a healthy social-emotional development. Young children develop their social-emotional skills through practice and small steps over time.

As parents or caregivers, it is fairly simple to support your child’s social-emotional skills. Acts like holding him, touching him, and speaking to him and giving him loving care and attention are all helping factors. When you allow them freedom to play, it is important to follow their interests in helping build their social-emotional skills.

Difficulties in social-emotional skills can often lead to children having trouble when playing with other children. Becoming easily angry or not empathizing (理解) with other children are all signs that may point in this direction. This can in turn lead to them not empathizing with the needs of other children.

As for the development of cognitive (认知的) skills, these develop through practice and opportunity over time. And while some cognitive skills may be genetic, most are learned through real life situations. In other words, learning and thinking skills can be improved through experiences.

To enable them to learn, it is important that we are mindful of what our children are interested in. And this realization is only set in place once the child is given enough room and time to grow and explore.

Depriving children of such experiences can mean that they might struggle with higher- level thinking skills. And while it is normal to keep them safe, we forget that by rushing them and cutting down on play time, we’re actually causing more harm than good.

1、What can playing with other children greatly help children do? A.Learn from other children. B.Develop their social emotion. C.Promote their personal hobbies. D.Help them to control their emotion.

2、What usually brings trouble to a child while playing with other children? A.Not understanding others. B.Caring too much about others. C.Lacking social emotional skills. D.Being more selfish than selfless.

3、What does the underlined word “depriving” in the last paragraph mean? A.Taking away. B.Providing for. C.Referring to. D.Focusing on.

4、What is the main purpose of the text? A.To call on us to promote children’s interest. B.To show us the importance of social emotions. C.To tell us how to improve children’s social emotions. D.To persuade parents to allow their children to play outdoors.

25.(10分) On a flight from Dallas, Texas, to Cincinnati, Ohio, to visit a friend in 2008, event planner Paige Chenault daydreamed about the grand birthday parties she’d throw for her daughter one day. (Paige was five months pregnant at the time.) Then, flipping through a magazine, she saw a photo of an impoverished Haitian boy, skinny. “I thought, this kid has nothing,” Paige says.

The image stayed with her, andshe resolved to do something to help. “I decided I would use my talents to throw birthday parties for homeless kids,” Paige says. For the next four years, Paige and her husband, Colin, took time out from parenthood to visit shelters to determine how best to pull off the parties.

Finally, in January 2012, Paige launched the Birthday Party Project, a nonprofit organization, and recruited friends and family to help decorate Dallas’s 42-occupant Family Gateway Shelter with balloons and streamers, celebrating the birthdays of 11 boys and girls, with 30 more homeless kids in attendance. “That first party was better than I could have ever imagined,” says Paige.

Now Paige and her staff of three paid employees work with regional volunteers to plan monthly themed parties at 12 shelters across the country, some of which house abused or abandoned kids. Each child celebrating a birthday that month gets a$30 gift, a decorative place mat, and an individual cake or cupcake.

One of Paige’s favorite parts of each party is when the kids make a wish and blow out the candles. “They rarely get a chance to dream big,” says Paige.

第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分30分) 第一节:共10小题,每小题2分,满分20分

A

When traveling, it’s important to learn about the customs and etiquette(礼仪) of the global village. What we consider polite behavior at home isn't always accepted outside our borders. ● Etiquette of Gift Giving

Gift giving should be a happy, positive experience. When selecting a present for someone in Netherlands, don't purchase fancy kitchen knives or scissors. Giving sharp, pointy objects as gifts is considered unlucky. Be careful when presenting flowers to a friend or a business partner in Russia. Yellow blooms suggest cheat or a relationship break up. Traditionally, red carnations are placed on the tombs of the dead. Writing cards or notes while visiting South orea, be mindful of your pen's ink color. Writing a person's name in red ink traditionally suggests that the person has passed away-an important point to remember when giving a birthday card. ● Eating Customs

Being early or on time is viewed as being rude, too eager or even greedy in Venezuela. If you are invited to someone's home for a meal, it's recommended that you arrive 10 minutes later than the requested time. When having a meal in Egypt, don’t use the salt shaker (盐瓶). It's insulting to your host to spread salt on your food, which means that you find the meal terrible. Japan is a very polite nation, and their fondness for etiquette extends to the use of chopsticks. According to Japanese custom, if you're in the middle of eating, use the opposite end of your chopsticks to secure food from a shared plate. When doing business in Turkey, it’s the custom for your host to pay for your meal. Requests to split the bill won’t be accepted. If you would like to pay your fair share, Turks recommend inviting your host to a follow-up meal. 21. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A. Giving a fancy kitchen knife to a friend from Russia is a good choice. B. You can use blue ink to write notes to your friend from South orea.

C. Dining with Japanese, one can use either end of the chopsticks to get food from shared plates. D. Invited to a meal, one should arrive earlier to show respect for the host. 22. What does the underlined word “insulting” in Paragraph 3 refer to? A. Respectful. B. Challenging. A. A news report.

C. Indifferent. B. A travel essay.

D. Offensive.

23. Where is this passage probably from? C. A culture column.

D. A food magazine.

B

Individuality is the particular character, or aggregate (total) of qualities that distinguishes one person or thing from others. Many artists late in the last century were in search of a means to express their individuality. Modern dance was one of the ways some of these people sought to free their creative spirit. At the beginning there was no exacting technique, no foundation from which to build. In later years, trial, error and genius founded the techniques and the principles of the movement. Eventually, innovators (改革者) even drew from what they considered the dread (令人恐惧的)ballet, but first they had to get rid of all that was academic so that the new could be discovered. The beginnings of modern dance were happening before Isadora Duncan, but she was the first person to bring the new dance to general audiences and see it accepted and acclaimed (称赞).

Her search for a natural movement form sent her to nature. She believed movement should be as natural as the swaying of the trees and the rolling waves of the sea, and should be in harmony with the

movements of the Earth. Her great contributions are in three areas.

First, she began the expansion of the kinds of movement that could be used in dance. Before Duncan danced, ballet was the only type of dance performed in concert. In the ballet the feet and legs were emphasized, with virtuosity (高超技巧) shown by complex, codified positions and movements. Duncan performed dance by using her body in the freest possible way. Her dance stemmed from her soul and spirit. She was one of the pioneers who broke tradition so others might be able to develop the art.

Her second contribution lies in dance costume. She rejected ballet shoes and stiff costumes. These were replaced with flowing Grecian (希腊式的) tunes, bare feet, and unbound hair. She believed in the natural body being allowed to move freely, and her dress displayed this ideal.

Her third contribution was in the use of music. In her performances she used the symphonies of great masters including Beethoven and Wagner, which was not the usual custom. She was as exciting and eccentric (怪异) in her personal life as in her dance. 24.According to the passage, what did nature represent to Isadora Duncan? A.Something to conquer. C.A place to find peace.

B.A model for movement.

D.A symbol of disorder.

25.Compared to those of the ballet, Isadora Duncan’s costumes were less _______. A.costly B.colorful C.graceful D.restrictive 26. We can infer from the passage that the author _________.

Since Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay climbed Mount Everest, Mount Qomolangma’s peak is no longer a lonely place and is turning into a trash heap(垃圾堆).

So far, more than 350 climbers have successfully reached the peak. And they have complained about waiting for hours in the bottlenecks (狭窄路段) on the way to the peak, a situation that isn’t just uncomfortable — it’s cold and windy up there — but downright dangerous. If bad weather strikes, climbers can and do die.

As a matter of fact, the dangerous crowds aren’t the only problem on Qomolangma. All those climbers need to bring a lot of gear—and much of them ends up being left on the mountain, sometimes even the peak itself. Mount Qomolangma is becoming the world’s largest dump. Here’s mountaineer Mark Jenkins writing in National Geographic about the state of Qomolangma “The two standard routes, the Northeast Ridge and the Southeast Ridge, are disgustingly polluted with oxygen cans and torn tents everywhere.”

But the good news is that some mountaineers are taking it upon themselves to clean up Qomolangma. Mountianeer Paul Thelen and his friend Eberhard Schaaf are part of the annual Eco Everest Expedition,

which has been cleaning up rubbish from base camps to the peak since 2008. So far they’ve collected over 13 tons of garbage.

Some of that rubbish is even being used for a higher purpose. As part of the Mount Everest 8844 Art Project, a group of 15 artists from Nepal collected 1.5 tons of garbage brought down the mountain by climbers. They’ve transformed the cans and oxygen tanks—and in one case, part of the remains of a helicopter—into 74 pieces of art that have already gone on exhibition in Nepal’s capital. Part of the profit from sales will go to the Everest Peakers Association, which has helped collect tons of rubbish on the slopes of the mountain.

28. What do we learn about the bottlenecks on the way to Mount Qomolangma’s peak?

A. They are relatively safe. C. They are very easy to pass.

B. They are often crowded.

D. They are sites of base camps.

29. What does the underlined word “gear” mean? A. Equipment for climbing mountains.

B. The food climbers brought onto the mountain. C. Some important machines used for the bottlenecks. D. Some rubbish found on the mountain. 30. The group of 15 Nepali artists_________.

A. created works of art using rubbish from Qomolangma B. were employed by the Everest Peakeers Association C. climbed Qomolangma and collected 1.5 tons of trash D. painted 74 beautiful pictures of Mount Qomolangma’s peak 31. What can be the best title for the text?

A. Eco Everest Expedition Proves Successful B. Qomolangma Has Become A Huge Mess C. Test Yourself Against Qomolangma D. Recycle Rubbish On Qomolangma

Students from Florida International University in Miami walked on water Thursday for a class assignment. To do it, they wore aquatic (水上的)shoes they designed and created.

Alex Quinones was the first to make it to the other side of a 175-foot lake on campus in record time—just over a minute. Quinones, who wore oversized boat-like shoes, also won last year and will receive $ 500. Students had to wear the aquatic shoes and make it across the lake in order to earn an “A” on the assignment for Architecture Professor Jaime Canaves, Materials and Methods Construction Class. “It's traditional in a school of architecture to do boats out of cardboard for a boat race. I thought our students were a little bit more special than that,” Canaves said. “We decided to do the walk on water event to take it

to the next level.”

A total of 79 students competed in the race this year in 41 teams. Only 10 teams failed to cross the lake. Others who fell got back up and made it to the end. The race is open to all students and anyone in the community. The youngest person to ever participate was a 9-year-old girl who competed in place of her mother, while the oldest was a 67-year-old female.

A large crowd on campus joined Canaves as he cheered on the racers. He shouted encouraging words, but also laughed as some unsteadily made their way to the end.

“A part of this is for them to have more understanding of designing and make it work better,” he said. It is also a lesson in life for the students.

“Anything, including walking on water, is possible, if you do the research, test it and go through the design process seriously.”

32. For what purpose did the students take part in the race?

A. To go across the lake to school. B. To test their balance on the water. C. To pass Professor Canaves’ class. D. To win the prize money of $ 500.

33. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

A. The students wore shoes distributed by Professor Canaves to walk across the lake. B. The students who fell into the water were criticized seriously by the Professor. C. Most students finished the class assignment successfully.

D. The students took part in the race to challenge their physical abilities. 34. What can we infer from the passage?

A. Alex Quinones is a top student in the university.

B. It’s a custom for the people in the community to get involved in student activities. C. The student who made it to the end in the race would succeed in their professional career. D. Professor Canaves attaches importance to hands-on learning experience. 35. The purpose of the passage is to ___________.

A. show his approval of the unique teaching style B. report an interesting assignment C. inspire teachers to be more creative

D. encourage more people to take part in the race

Of the many unpleasant emotions we can experience, fear may top the list. 36 . Fear can also keep us from pursuing the things in life that really matter -- like following our dreams, and developing important relationships. I have some ideas, though, of how to be free from fear. ? Experience fear.

I used to be very afraid of speaking in front of people. I would get sweaty palms and my stomach would be so tied up that I wouldn't be able to eat. However, each time I spoke, I noticed afterwards that it

wasn't that bad. Things I fear are never as bad in reality as I make them out in my mind. 37 . ? Create space.

The first and most important step to being fearless is to create some space between ourselves and the emotion of fear. This isn't accomplished by ignoring the fear, or trying to talk ourselves out of it. 38 . In fact, a recent research shows that by simply admitting the emotion we actually begin to reverse the \or flight(逃避)\? Control the breath and feel the fear.

Once we acknowledge the presence of fear, the second step is to control the breathing so that it becomes slower and gentler. We try to make the breath just a little bit longer, and feel how fear manifests(展现) in the body. 39 .

With practice, we can create enough space between us and the emotion of fear so that we're able to replace a fearful thought with a positive one. 40 . For instance, before I get up to speak in front of a group of people, I imagine that the audience is positively impressed by what I say and that I manage to complete the speech successfully.

A. Space is created only when we can honestly acknowledge that fear exists. B. We can imagine a positive outcome for whatever we're about to do. C. Fear, if left uncontrolled, can even destroy our life.

D. So one way to get rid of fear is to simply push ourselves to do things that we fear. E. When we can see a positive outcome in our mind, fear no longer holds us back. F. But fear is more than just physically unpleasant.

G. As we pay attention to the physical symptoms of fear, we can see fear objectively.

Martin was returning to work in his London office after spending two weeks with his brother in New York. He was coming back with a heavy heart. It was not just that it was the end of a wonderful holiday; it was not just that he invariably suffered badly from jet lag (时差) ; it was that Monday mornings always began with a team meeting and, over the months, he had grown to hate them.

Martin was aware that colleagues approached these meetings with hidden agendas(日程); they indulged(纵容) game-playing; and he knew that people were not being honest and open. The meetings themselves were bad enough-there were al the complaints afterwards at the meeting like “I could have improved on that idea, but I wasn't going to say\.

As this morning's meeting began, Martin prepared himself for the usual dullness and boredom. But,

as the meeting progressed, he became aware of a strange background noise. At first, he thought that he was still hearing the engine noise from the aircraft that had brought him back to London. But, as he concentrated on the noise, it became a little clearer.

He re4ized-to his amazement-that he could actually hear what they were thinking at the same time as they were speaking. What surprised him, even more than the acquisition(获得)of this strange power, was that he discovered that what people were saying was not really what they were thinking. They were not making clear their reservations(保留意见).They were not supporting views which they thought might be popular. They were not contributing their new insights. They were not volunteering their new ideas. Martin found it impossible not to respond to his new knowledge. So he started to make gentle interventions(干涉),based more on what he could hear his colleagues thinking than on what he could hear them saying.“ So, John are you really saying… ” “Susan, do you really think that? ” “Tom, have you got an idea on how we could take this forward? ” They looked at him, puzzled. In truth, he felt rather proud of his newly-acquired talent.

As the meeting progressed, it was clear to him that each member of the meeting was learning how to hear the thoughts of me others. The game-playing started to fall away; people started to speak more directly; views became better understood; the atmosphere became more open and trusting.

Diana Jacobs thought her family had a workable plan to pay for college for her 21-year-old twin sons a combination of savings, income, scholarships, and a modest amount of borrowing. Then her husband lost his job, and the plan fell apart.

“I have two kids in college, and 1 want to say ‘come home’ , but at the same time I want to provide them with a good education, ” says Jacobs.

The Jacobs family did work out a solution They asked and received more aid from the schools, and each son increased his borrowing to the maximum amount through the federal loan (贷款) program. They will each graduate with $20,000 of debt, but at least they will be ab4 to finish school. With unemployment rising, financial aid administrators expect to hear from more families like the Jacobses.More students are applying for aid, and more families expect to need student loans. “If we go on this way for another 25 years, we won't have an affordable system of higher education, \ says Patrick M. Callan, president of the center. \

\Belle, the founder of Parkour(跑酷).

Do you love running? It is a good exercise, yet many people find it boring. But what if making your morning jog a creative one? Like jumping from walls and over gaps, and ground rolls? Just like the James Bond in the movie Casino Royale? Bond jumps down from a roof to a windowsill (窗台) and then runs several blocks over obstacles on the way. It is just because of Bond's wonderful performances that the sport has become popular worldwide.

Yes, that's Parkour, an extreme street sport aimed at moving from one point to another as quickly as

possible, getting over all the obstacles in the path using only the abilities of the human body. Parkour is considered an extreme sport. As its participants dash around a city, they may jump over fences, run up walls and even move from rooftop to rooftop,

Parkour can be just as exciting and charming as it sounds, but its participants see Parkour much more than that.

Overcoming all the obstacles on the course and in life is part of the philosophy behind Parkour. This is the same as life. You must determine your destination, go straight, jump over all the barriers as if in Parkour and never fall back from them in your life, to reach the destination successfully. A Parkour lover said, ”I love Parkour because its philosophy has become my life, my way to do everything.\ Another philosophy we’ve learnt from Parkour is freedom. It can be done by anyone, at any time, anywhere in the world. It is a kind of expression of trust in yourself that you earn energy and confidence. 68. NEW YOR (AP) — The investigation into the disappearance of 6-year-old Etan Patz has gone through decades and countries, from basements to rooftops and seemingly everywhere in between.

No one has ever been charged criminally — and the little boy with sandy brown hair and a toothy grin was declared dead in 2001.

This week, the six-year-old boy who went missing from the Soho area of New York City in 1979 is back in the news. Police and the FBI are investigating a possible lead into the 33-year-old case of Etan Patz, the first missing child to appear on the side of a milk box.

The child disappeared on the way to school on the morning of May 25, 1979. It was the first time he was allowed to walk the two blocks to the bus stop alone.

A tip seemed to have led officials to the basement of a building on the corner of Prince and Wooster streets, about a block and a half from where Etan had lived with his family.

The name Etan Patz has become a hot topic on Twitter as people weigh in on the case. Shirley Brady noted “As mom to a 6 years old in Soho, it’s still held out by locals as cautionary tale (警示故事).” Another wrote, “Boy who disappeared on his way to school in 1979 has been REOPENED! Crazy.” One wondered, “Why is FBI and NYPD searching for a kid that disappeared in 1979?”

Good question. This is a case that Stuart Gra Bois, as an assistant U.S. lawyer under Rudolph Giuliani, followed for years. It became the most famous missing-person case in New York City, turned a nationwide spotlight on missing children, and created headlines around the globe. No one was ever stated guilty of the crime.

The case led to the creation of National Missing Children’s Day, marked on May 25, the day the blond-haired, blue-eyed child went missing.

The case has even pointed to a suspect, charged with child molester (猥亵者) Julio Antonio Ramos, who is currently in prison. Patz’s babysitter had been dating the man, and Ramos did know the kid, but has denied taking him away.

New evidence in the case suggests another suspect who lived in the apartment at the time a local handyman named Othniel Miller, who gave Etan $1 for helping him the night before the disappearance.

The man’s name had come up in an earlier investigation, but he was a friend of the Patz family, and the NYPD did not follow the lead.

Investigators plan to be at the site, 127 B Prince St., which is now a Lucky Brand jeans store, for the next two to three days to search for human remains. The Associated Press reports that the excavation (挖掘) has been the result of a recently ordered review of the case by Manhattan’s police. 41. We can learn from the first three paragraphs that ________.

A. The 6-year-old missing boy was found by the side of a milk box

B. Police and the FBI have not been following the case of Etan Patz for 33 years C. The investigation into the disappearance of boy has worked fruitlessly for decades D. Etan Patz went missing from the Soho area of New York city in 1979 and died in 2001 42. What does the underlined phrase “weigh in on the case” mean?

A. ignore the case C. reopen the case

B. feel stressed on the case D. begin to discuss the case

43. What was a possible cause of reopening the case of Etan Patz? A. Local lawyers strongly demanded the reopening of the case. B. The Associated Press reported the result of the review of the case. C. New evidence appeared which led officials to the basement of building.

D. Local people realized the importance of the case without criminal being charged. 44. Which of the following statements is true in the text?

A. The National Missing Children’s Day was created on May 25,1979. B. The search for human remains will be carried out at 127. B. Prince Street.

C. The NYPD didn’t follow the lead of Julio Antonio for he had been dating Patz’babysitter. D. Othniel Miller, a local handyman assisted Etan and gave him﹩1 before the disappearance. 45. We can learn from the passage that ________.

A. People air the same view about the case on the Internet B. People reject the reopening of the case of the missing boy

C. The missing-person case still has a long-lasting influence on people D. Twitter is the only place for people to discuss about missing-person cases

September can be a depressing month. The summer holidays are over, it’s time to go back to work or school and Christmas is four months away. However, for some people it’s the perfect time to get away.

These days more and more people are taking their holidays late in the year and for good reasons. Holidays in autumn can be cheaper, the resorts are less crowded and the weather isn’t as extreme as it is in the summer. So, where are the best places to go? Here are our top tips.

Sardinia (in Italy) has an average temperature of 27℃ in September. It also has “Autunno in Barbagia” (Autumn in Barbagia) a series of festivals that take place in 27 villages in Barbagia, a mountainous region of inland Sardinia. The festivals continue from September to December, so there’s always something happening. There are street markets, craft workshops and there’s lots of eating and drinking (This is Italy, after all).

Dubrovnik Croatia has become very popular in summer but it’s quieter and more pleasant once the crowds have left. The weather is still warm but less humid. You can take a ferry to the popular beaches on the islands of Sunj and enjoy it with locals.

Dahab Egypt, is very hot in the summer with temperatures up to 38℃. However, the autumn is cooler while the sea is still warm. This makes Dahab the perfect place for snorkeling and windsurfing. There are also interesting historical sites to visit such as the Coloured Canyon, with its dramatic rock formations, and St Catherine’s Monastery, at the foot of Mount Sinai.

as is a relaxed fishing village on the Lycian coast in southern Turkey. There are plenty of things to do and the temperature has dropped (so you can actually enjoy doing them!) as is a good place to stay if you want to walk part of the Lycian way a long-distance footpath that stretches for 500km from Fethiye to Antalya through the ancient land of Lycia. There are also watersports, of course. The best time to go diving is supposed to be after the first rains of autumn (usually between late September and early October) when the fish become most active.

Marrakech Morocco is another good destination. The city itself is a fascinating place to spend a few days. When you have had enough of that, go to Tigmi, a beautiful hill town about 20 kilometers away. There’s a hammam (a Turkish bath) and a large heated pool, which makes it the perfect place to relax.

Wherever you go this autumn – have fun!

46. Here are the good reasons for people to take holidays in autumn except that _______. A. Holidays in autumn can be cheaper B. the scenery in autumn is more attractive C. the resorts in autumn are less crowded D. The weather is neither too hot nor too cold 47. We can infer from Paragraph 3 that _______________.

A. visitors can take part in a series of festivals in October in Barbagia B. Barbagia in Egypt is surrounded by mountains C. the festivals continue from September to November

D. the temperature in Sardinia in September is always below 27℃ 48. For someone who enjoys walking, __________ is the best choice. A. as B. Marrakech C. Dahab D. Dubrovnik 49. Which of the following places may not be close to sea?

A. Dubrovnik B. Dahab C. as D. Marrakech

As anyone who has tried to lose weight knows, realistic goal-setting generally produces the best results. That’s partly because most people who set realistic goals actually work more efficiently, and put more effort, to achieve those goals.

What’s far less understood by scientists, however, are the potentially harmful effects of goal-setting. Newspapers convey daily accounts of goal-setting widespread in industries and businesses up and down both Wall Street and Main Street, yet there has been surprisingly little research on how the long-advocated practice of setting goals may have contributed to the current economic crisis, and immoral behavior in general.

“Goals are widely used and promoted as having really beneficial effects. And yet, the same motivation that can push people to put more effort in a constructive way could also motivate people to be more likely to engage in immoral behaviors,” says Maurice Schweitzer, an associate professor at Penn’s Wharton School. His paper, titled “Goals Gone Wild The Systematic Side Effects of Over-Praised Goal Setting,” appears in the February issue of the Academy of Management Perspectives.

“It turns out there’s no financial benefit to just having a goal---you just get a psychological benefit” Schweitzer says. “But in many cases, goals have financial rewards that make them more powerful.”

A major example Schweitzer and his colleagues give is the 2004 breakdown of energy-trading giant Enron( 德国安然公司), where managers used financial rewards to motivate salesmen to meet specific goals. The problem, Schweitzer says, is that the actual trades were not profitable.

Other studies have shown that burdening employees with unrealistic goals can force them to lie, cheat or steal. Such was the case in the early 1990s when Sears(西尔斯公司)placed a sales quota (销售限额) on its auto repair staff. It inspired employees to overcharge for work and to complete unnecessary repairs on a companywide basis.

Schweitzer admits his research runs counter to a very large body of literature that praises the many benefits of goal-setting. Advocates of the practice have argued with his team’s use of such evidence as news accounts to support his conclusion that goal-setting is widely over-praised.

In a rebuttal (反驳) paper, Dr. Edwin Locke writes “Goal-setting is not going away. Organizations cannot grow without being focused on their desired end results any more than an individual can grow without goals to provide a sense of purpose.”

But Schweitzer argues the “evidence” linking goal-setting and harmful behavior should be studied to help draw attention to issues that deserve attention and further investigation. “Even a few negative effects could be so large that they outweigh many positive effects,” he says.

The debate is likely to get heated on in future papers, and the practice of setting goals no doubt will continue. For now, though, the lesson seems to be put more thought into setting goals.

“Goal-setting does help motivate people. My idea would be to combine that with careful management, a strong organizational culture, and make sure the goals that you use are going to be constructive and not significantly harmful to the organization,” Schweitzer says.

50. What does Maurice Schweitzer want to show by mentioning the example of Enron?

A. Setting realistic goals can turn a failing business into success. B. Businesses are likely to succeed without realistic goals.

C. Companies are certain to meet specific goals with financial rewards. D. Goals with financial rewards have strong motivational power. 51. How did Sears’ goal-setting affect its employees?

A. They had to work more hours to increase their sales. B. They competed with one another to attract more customers. C. They turned to immoral practice to reach their goals.

D. They improved their customer service on a companywide basis.

52. The underlined words “runs counter to” (Paragraph 7) can be replaced by ________.

A. agrees with

53. What is Edwin Locke’s argument against Schweitzer?

A. The practice of setting goals only helps people to develop.

B. Goal-setting is of no use for motivating people to accomplish their tasks. C. The positive effects of goal-setting outweigh its negative effects. D. Studying goal-setting can contribute to successful business practices. 54. According to the passage, the author tries to convey ___________.

A. the goals that most people set are unrealistic

B. all people can improve their work quality by setting goals C. setting goals can provide people with a sense of purpose D. people should not ignore the negative effects of goal-setting

I lost everything. That is, I’d either lose or destroy it. Jewelry. Dolls. Games. Whatever made its way into my hands I chewed on or destroyed beyond recognition. I ate paper, and once consumed an entire book. Poor Curious George didn’t stay curious for long around me. He was eaten. Mom and Dad called me “instant disaster”. And because I was so messy, they always sat me at the dinner table next to the guests they weren’t planning to invite back.

C. fits in with

D. applies to

One day in the second grade, I walked home from school, and my surprised mother looked at me as I walked through the front door. “Carol,” she asked calmly but with a confused look on her face, “Where’s your coat?” I looked down and saw my broken leather shoes, worn-out pants, and white (but dirty) cotton shirt. Until my mother pointed out that I wasn’t fully dressed, I hadn’t noticed. I was just as surprised as she was, for we both remembered that I had been wearing the coat that morning. My mother and I walked across the street to the school, looked on the sidewalks and all over the playground and in the halls, but in vain.

The following winter my mother and father bought me a fur brown coat with a matching hat. I loved my new coat and hat and felt like a big girl. I promised that I would be careful and not lose the hat.

One day my father came home from work and called me downstairs from my room. He bent down to my size and hugged me, and he asked me if I would try on my new coat and hat and model them for him. Upstairs I rushed, two steps at a time, excited to put on a fashion show for my father. I threw on the coat, but I couldn’t find the hat. I nervously looked under my bed and in the closet, but it was nowhere. Maybe he wouldn’t notice that I wasn’t wearing it.

I flew downstairs and twirled(旋转) around as if on a runway, posing and smiling, modeling my new coat for my father who was paying attention to me and telling me how pretty I looked. Then he said he wanted me to model the hat, too. “No, Daddy, I just want to show you the coat. Just look at the coat on me!” I said, still dancing around the hallway and trying to avoid the subject of the missing hat. I knew that the hat was history. He was giggling(咯咯地笑), and I thought I was admirable and loved because he was laughing and playing with me. We went around a couple times about the hat, and in the middle of his laugh, he slapped me. He slapped me hard on the face, and I didn’t understand why. At the sharp sound of his hand on my face, my mother shouted, “Mike! What are you doing! What are you doing!” She was breathless and stunned. His anger hurt both my mother and me. I just stood there holding my hand to my burning cheek, crying. And then he took my new hat out of his coat pocket. He had found it lying in the street, and as he looked at me over the top of his glasses, he said, “Maybe now you will learn not to be careless and lose things.”

I am a grown woman now, and I still lose things. I am still careless. But what my father taught me that day was not a lesson of responsibility. I learned not to trust his laughter. Because even his laughter hurt. 55. Why did the writer’s parents call her “instant disaster”?

A. Because she was naughty and looked very ugly. B. Because she often destroyed things on purpose. C. Because her behavior was extremely abnormal. D. Because she was destructive and made a mess.

56. In the writer’s eyes, her mother is _______.

A. hardworking, brave and strict

B. warmhearted, tolerant and helpful

C. cruel, false and mean D. spoiling children and economical 57. The underlined word “stunned” can be replaced by _______.

A. shocked B. excited C. disappointed D. depressed 58. From the passage we can know the writer had a bad habit of ________. A. tearing paper B. being rude to guests

This does not just mean posting a video to their Facebook page every once in a while. If you live far away from your close friends, take the time to call them once every week. If you live near your best friends, make time each week to stop in. Many studies show that people with a wide range of social contacts get sick less than those who don't. Friends make you laugh, and laughing is also an important part of health.

62. ______

Set some time aside to practice an instrument, do an art project, take photos, build models, weld, bake gourmet cakes, or whatever else enriches your free time. If you want to learn something new, take an evening or weekend class. If you can’t think of anything interesting off the top of your head, take the time to find a hobby. If you’re convinced that there isn’t enough time in the day to pursue any outside activities, try to cut back on a time-wasting activity like channel-surfing. 63. ______

It is important to be aware of what you are feeling. When you are in touch with your emotions, you will be able to both recognize when you are acting out because of your emotions and empathize more thoroughly with others. nowing yourself is a key part of having good mental health--it’s important to know when something is making you unhappy so that you can either fix it or cut it out of your life. Likewise, it is also good to recognize the things that make you happy. Surrounding yourself with good energy will promote a happier, healthier you. 64. ______

Stress is unavoidable--whether you are running late for work, or have to get a shot at the doctor’s office, it is normal to feel stressed out. However, you can reduce your stress and learn how to manage your reaction to stressful things. Be aware of the things that stress you out and try to avoid those triggers(触发物). For example, if sitting in traffic makes you stressed, avoid driving during peak rush hour. If that means getting up early and getting to work early, then find a coffee shop near your office and relax before work. 65. ______

If you have noticed that you have a hard time relaxing or sleeping at night, take up yoga or meditation classes. After work or class, head to your local yoga studio and learn how to focus your breath so that you feel all your tensions unwind. Take a few moments each day to release any stresses you have and focus on the here and now. Instead of worrying about something that happened in the past, or planning for the future, take a moment to notice what is going on around you.

Have you ever been to the world’s smallest bookstore?

The World’s Smallest Bookstore, whose official name is just these three words, sits quietly about 100 miles northeast of Toronto.

The bookstore is about 10 feet by 10 feet,so it is easy to imagine how tiny it really is.The bookstore is open 24 hours a day.Inside the bookstore are various books, especially literary books and classic authors’ works. So if you are looking for something less popular, you may get a bit disappointed there.

Another special feature of this bookstore is that each book only costs three dollars. All the expenses are paid on the honor system, which means buyers should make a note of what they’ve bought and leave their money by themselves. So the tools of the trade in this bookstore are quite simple pens, papers, light bulbs and a label-maker.

In order to catch passers-by’s attention, the billboards(广告牌)of the bookstore are several times bigger than the store itself. With these large eye-catchers,many people are willing to stop by and have a visit.

21.What’s the passage mainly about?

A.The world’s smallest bookstore. B.A strange way of selling books. C.The popular books nowadays.

D.The popular bookstores in the world.

A.Books on popular science.

B.Literary books.

C.The year book of a university. D.Books on economic control.

Wake Up,Sleep Gene

Some people can stay up all night and still get work done the next day.I’m not one of them. After a night without enough sleep,I feel bad-tempered.I have trouble remembering things. And all I want to do is crawl back into bed and sleep.

How do you feel after you’ve stayed up late to finish schoolwork? Or the day after an overnight party? Scientists now say that your answers to these questions may depend on your genes.

New research suggests that a gene called period 3 affects how well you function without sleep. The period 3 gene comes in two forms short and long.Everyone has two copies of the gene. So,you may have two longs, two shorts,or one of each.Your particular combination depends on what your parents passed on to you.

Scientists from the University of Surrey in England studied 24 people who had either two short or two long copies of period 3.Study participants had to stay awake for 40 hours straight. Then, they took tests that measured how quickly they pushed a button when number flashed on a screen and how well they could remember lists of numbers.

Results showed that the people with the short form of period 3 performed much better on these tests than the people with the long form did.In both groups, people performed worst in the early morning. That’s the time when truck drivers and other night-shift workers say they have the most trouble concentrating.

After the first round of experiments, participants were finally allowed to sleep.People in the group that performed well on the tests took about 18 minutes to nod off.

People with the long period 3 genes,by contrast, fell asleep in just 8 minutes .They also spent more time in dip sleep. That suggests that people with the long form of the gene need more and deeper sleep to keep their brains working at top form.

I think I must have the long form of period3.What about you? 24.The purpose of this passage might be________.

A.to tell us the importance of plenty of sleep B.to tell the result of a research on sleepy gene C.to inform the harm of lacking sleep D.to announce the sleeping rules of humans

25.What kind of people need less sleep according to the research?

A.Those with two short copies of the gene B.Those with two long copies of the gene

C.Those with one short and one long copies of the gene D.Those with three short copies of the gene.

26.If one lacks enough sleep, one should avoid doing important or dangerous things________.

A.at noon

B.at night

C.in the afternoon

D.at dawn

27.Why did the writer suppose he or she had a long form of period 3?

A.Because the writer could remain energetic without enough sleep. B.Because the writer could do things correctly at dawn. C.Because the writer needed more sleep to keep energetic D.Because the writer recovered quickly after sleep.

Being an astronaut sounds cool, doesn't it? In space, they get to do some pretty amazing things, like floating in zero gravity.

However, there are also plenty of things that astronauts can't do because of their weightless environment, and that's very sad. What's worse, they can't even let their sadness show – because it's impossible to cry in zero gravity.

Of course, astronauts can still produce tears. But crying is much more difficult in space, reported The Atlantic in January.Without gravity, tears don't flow downward out of the eyes like they do here on Earth. This means that when you cry in space, your tears have nowhere to go – they just stick to your eyes.

In May 2011,astronaut Andrew Feustel experienced this during one of his spacewalks.\said,\...They just kind of stay there.\

Besides making your vision unclear, this can also cause physical pain.Back on Earth, tears are supposed to bring comfort to the eyes. But that's not the case in space. The space environment dries out astronauts' eyes, and when tears suddenly wet the eyes,it can cause pain rather than comfort.\eye is painful like crazy.\.

Since gravity doesn't work in space, astronauts need some extra help to get rid of the tears.Feustel chose to rub his eyes against his helmet to wipe the tears away.Another choice is to just wait – \tears get big enough they simply break free of the eye and float around,\Atlantic.

There are lots of small things – things like crying – that we are so used to on Earth. We usually take them for granted, until they become a problem in a totally different environment, like space. There, astronauts can't talk to each other directly. They also can't eat or drink in normal ways. They can't even burp(打嗝),because there is no gravity to hold the food down in their stomach. If they do burp, they just end up throwing up(呕吐)everything in their stomach, according to the U National Space Center.

Thus, perhaps it's only space explorers who can honestly say \,you're the best.\28.What can we conclude from paragraphs 2 and 3?

A.Astronauts are unable to feel sad in space. B.Astronauts produce fewer tears in space. C.Tears produced in space flow down more slowly. D.Tears produced in space don't flow downward.

29.What effect do tears have on astronauts?

A.They cause physical pain. B.They bring comfort to them. C.They make their vision clearer. D.They float around and cause trouble. 30.What can the astronaut do to get rid of the tears?

A.Rub his eyes against his helmet to let the tears float forward. B.Rub his eyes by hand to let the tears float around. C.Get the tears big enough to fall off of his eyes. D.Get the tears big enough to break away from his eyes. 31.What's the second-to-last paragraph mainly about?

A.Suggestions on how astronauts can stay comfortable in space. B.Other basic things that are difficult to do in space. C.Why burping is impossible in space. D.Things that humans can't do without gravity.

Researchers found that people become happier and experience less worry after they reach the age of fifty. In fact, they say by the age of eighty-five,people are happier with their life than they were when they were eighteen years old.

Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were highest among adults between the ages of twenty-two and twenty-five.The findings showed that stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their fifties.Happiness was highest among the youngest adults and those in their early seventies. The people least likely to report feeling negative emotions were those in their seventies and eighties.

The findings appeared in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.Researchers say they do not know why happiness increases as people get older. One theory is that,as people grow older, they grow more thankful for what they have and have better control of their emotions. They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences.

The researchers considered possible influences like having young children, being unemployed or being single. But they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of happiness and well-being related to age.

The study also showed that men and women have similar emotional patterns as they grow older. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men. 32.We can learn from the research that ________.

A.only when people get older, will they feel happier B.older people usually have no worries in their life C.stress levels among the youngest are the highest of all D.older people are more likely to be thankful in life

33.According to the researchers, what is probably the reason why people grow happier when they get

older?

A.When people get older, they can’t remember bad experiences. B.When people get older, they have no young children to care about. C.When people get older, they learn to adjust their feelings. D.When people get older, they don’t care about their feelings. 34.What do you think the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences is?

A.A Gallup organization.

B.A popular science magazine.

C.A university in New York. D.A research institution

35.What would the writer probably deal with in next paragraph?

A.Advice to the young people on how to keep happy. B.Advice to the old people on how to live longer.

C.Why women at all ages are more sad, stressed and worried. D.Why people will grow happier with their ages. 第二节(共5小题每小题2分,满分10分)

Experiencing bad dreams every night can be horrifying for anybody. Bad dreams can disturb the sleep and make a person feel stressed throughout the next day. That’s why one should take steps to stop them as soon as they become an everyday occurrence.

Before knowing how to get rid of bad dreams, we need to understand what can result in them. Researches have shown that when a person is under some sort of physical or mental stress, he is more likely to get bad dreams and disturbed sleep. So, to stop bad dreams, it’s necessary to find out the causes of physical and mental stress in your life and remove these. For instance, if you’re overworked, learn to take things slow. Don’t be ambitious to the point that it starts affecting your health.

Besides, some trauma(损伤) that a person might have experienced recently or in the past which they’re unable to get over can make the person suffer from bad dreams. Death of a very close family member is often seen to be the reason behind recurrent nightmares. In such a case, taking therapy and dealing with the trauma is the only solution to stop bad dreams.

Eating fatty and high-protein foods in dinner is also known to cause bad dreams in some people. So, bad dreams occurring because of these reasons can be stopped if the diet is changed. Taking a light dinner of soups and salad is the best, both for the health and for stopping disturbed sleep in some cases.

Besides these, there are many other things a person can do to have a good night’s sleep. For example, your bedroom should be the most comfortable place in the world. So, get rid of all electronic gadgets including television. In addition, if you have negative thoughts, it can have side effects on the kind of dreams you have. They say there are three ways to experience the Grand Canyon; on foot, on mules(骡子) or by air. We chose the first. Up early; my husband and I and our three children couldn’t wait to get started. We decided to walk along a lovely path named Bright Angel Trail.

As we set out, I was shocked at how narrow the path was. And I couldn’t help noticing that the other tourists weren’t like us. They had heavy backpacks, water bottles, and hats. But as usual we were dressed. As the sun rose higher, Arizona’s famous heat seemed to roast(烘烤) us. There was no shade and our legs were aching. We decided to go back, with the girl on my back and the boys far behind. By the time we finally got back, our legs were like jelly.

The next day, after we’d had a long rest and a good breakfast, we were ready for another view of the Canyon – by air. After our last walk, this would be the easiest thing in the world.

We called to each other excitedly as the plane took off and circled around the Canyon. But the smiles on our faces disappeared as the pilot tossed(翻转) the plane around, pretending he was going to hit the ground. I shouted, “STOP, TAE US BAC!” When we finally arrived back on land, once again our legs were like jelly. We hardly spoke as we drove back.

As I said, there are three ways to view the Grand Canyon. We never tried the mules, but personally I’d suggest a fourth buy yourself a good magazine like National Geographic. That way, you can see the Canyon, without fear or tiredness.

21. Which of the following is true according to the second paragraph?

A. They made a careful preparation before the trip B. They children were more joyful than their parents. C. Bright Angel Trail was not as lovely as they expected. D. The summer heat prevented them from enjoying the view.

22. The underlined expression “Our legs were like jelly” probably means .

More than 10 years ago, it was difficult to buy a tasty pineapple (菠萝). The fruits that made it to the U were green on the outside and, more often than not, hard with an unpleasant taste within. Then in 1966, the Del Monte Gold pineapple produced in Hawaii first hit our shelves.

The new type of pineapple looked more yellowy-gold than green. It was slightly softer on the outside and had a lot of juice inside. But the most important thing about this new type of pineapple was that it was twice as sweet as the hit-and-miss pineapples we had known. In no time, the Del Monte Gold took the market by storm, rapidly becoming the world’s best-selling pineapple variety, and delivering natural levels of sweetness in the mouth, up until then only found in tinned pineapple.

In nutrition it was all good news too. This nice tasting pineapple contained four times more vitamin C

than the old green variety. Nutritionists said that it was not only full of vitamins, but also good against some diseases. People were understandably eager to be able to buy this wonderful fruit. The new type of pineapple was selling fast, and the Del Monte Gold pineapple rapidly became a fixture in the shopping basket of the healthy eater.

Seeing the growing market for its winning pineapple, Del Monte tried to keep market to itself. But other fruit companies argued successfully that Del Monte turned to law for help, but failed. Those companies argued successfully that Del Monte’s attempts to keep the golden pineapple for itself were just a way to knock them out the market.

It is often necessary to release a fish, that is , set it free after catching, because it is too small, or you just don’t want to take it home to eat. In some cases, releasing fish is a good measure that will help keep fish variety and build their population size. The Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF) encourages fishermen who practice catch-and-release fishing to use a few simple skills when doing so. The advice provided below will help make sure that the fish you release will survive to bite again another day.

—When catching a fish, play it quickly and keep the fish in the water as much as

possible. Don’t’ use a net in landing the fish and release it quickly to prevent it from dying.

—Hold the fish gently. Do not put your fingers in its eyes. Don’t wipe the scales (鱼鳞) off the fish because it might cause it to develop a disease and reduce its chance of survival.

—Remove your hook (鱼钩) quickly. If the hook is too deep or hooked in the stomach, cut the line and leave the hook in. The hook left inside will cause no serious problem to the fish.

—Take good care of the fish by moving it gently in water . Release the fish when it begins to struggle and is able to swim.

—Do not hold fish in a bucket or some other containers and later decide to release it. If you are going to release a fish, do so right away.

With a little care and by following the suggestions given above, you can give the released fish a better chance of survival.

A conversation with a good listener is like a good meal—we walk away feeling satisfied and happy.

36 Here are 4 ways to make your conversation partner feel like you’re fully listening to their personal radio station.

Making your conversation partner feel safe starts with two things an open mind and keeping judgment to yourself. Just as immersing(沉浸)yourself in a novel requires pause of disbelief, immersing yourself in listening requires pause of opinions or advice.
