To me, inspirations mean to put my thoughts, heart, and creations into my jewelry. Sometimes I become so inspired with what I’m working on that I can finish one or more sets in less than an hour. Because of that feeling, I have named my jewelry collection “Inspirations’’.

I am a 17-year-old student with sickle-cell anemia. With this, I am in and out of the hospital a lot. So I started making jewelry a year ago when I was in the hospital. I really needed something to do, so I was introduced to jewelry making by a child life expert.

One day while lying in my hospital bed, I decided to get up and go to the patient’s playroom, and look through the craft designs. That was when I became inspired to design my jewelry collection, and named it “Inspirations”. When I’m not sick, I try to keep a positive attitude through reading, schoolwork, and craft activities. Even though there is a lot of work, I try to stay focused all the time. When I need a break or just to be free I turn to my craft activities. This is a way to ease my mind and it always helps me to especially get through those stressful times.

I am getting very excited about graduating next year and preparing myself for college. Who knows my collection of “Inspirations” would take me to the places I always dreamed of? I may see celebrities I admire and even sell them some of my beautiful “Inspirations”. If they wear my “Inspirations’’, it will be well known and in great demand. What a great way to make some extra money for college! I never thought being sick would bring me “Inspirations”. I want people to look beyond my illness and see the creations I’ve made in my collection called “Inspirations”.

24. What does “sickle-cell anemia” refer to?

A. A hospital. B. A place C. A doctor. D. An illness. 25. Why did the writer call his jewelry collection “Inspirations”?

A. Because it was designed by a patient. B. Because it was designed in the hospital. C. Because its designs came from inspiration. D. Because the designs were various and fresh. 26. What can we infer from the passage?

A. The writer is a senior high school student. B. The writer will graduate from college next year. C. The writer wants to be a doctor in the future.

D. The writer plans to be a jewelry designer after graduation. 27. What is the best title of the passage?

A. My Jewelry Collection B. Create “Inspirations” C. My Illness D. How to Get Through Bad Times

Being unpopular with your classmates may not only make your schooldays painful, but also could make you ill decades later. Research has shown those who are socially alone in their teens are more likely to suffer health problems from

. . . .

obesity to high blood pressure when they hit their 40s.

More importantly, the health effects weren’t limited to those who were threatened at school, suggesting that even being slightly socially alone can be harmful to health. Swedish researchers analyzed data from a study that tracked the health and habits of around 900 16-year-olds for 27 years. At the start, their teachers were asked to rate how outgoing or shy they were and their popularity. At around the age of 43, they underwent a battery of medical tests.

The results linked unpopularity and social loneliness to obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes (糖尿病)and bad blood fats. The study also showed that the more unpopular someone was in their teens, the more likely they were to suffer from changed symptoms in middle age. The effect was particularly noticeable among the girls, with the most unpopular and introverted (内向的) at 16 more than three times as likely to be in bad shape at 43.

The researchers, from Umea University, said the results can’t simply explain away by those who are in bad health in middle age being sickly since their teens. They added that their study is the first to show that unhappy schooldays can have such long-lasting results.

Various factors could lie behind the effect. For instance, loneliness can push blood pressure up into the danger zone for heart attacks. The lonely also sleep more fitfully (断断续续地)and they may also turn to “comfort eating\likely to look after themselves in general.

28. What can the unpopularity and loneliness bring to students?

A. Having a stomachache. B. Putting on weight.

C. Becoming slimmer. D. Suffering low blood pressure. 29. The researchers in Umea University found that______.

A. social loneliness can be harmful to health

B. unhappy schooldays can cause long-lasting consequences C. unpopular students will be sick at around the age of 43

For the business traveler who is all about efficiency: Check out these hotels that will get you in and out with a minimum of trouble. When you are pressed for time on a business trip, nothing can infuriate you more than a slow hotel check-in process. On your next trip, try these hotels that offer a speedier check-in process. 1. Yotel New York

The self-service kiosks at this high-tech New York hotel work just like the ones you’d see at an airport. There are just five-steps to register and obtain your card key. There is even a robotic luggage bellboy. You tap in the number of bags you are carrying and sizes, then wait for a robot arm to swing down and store your luggage in a locker (say, for a day trip). This also speeds up the check-in process if the first thing you need to do, like me, is head to a series of meetings. 2. Marriott Detroit Airport

Another option for business travelers in a hurry: Marriott is rolling out its mobile check-in app to 325 hotels this year, including the Marriott Detroit Airport hotel. (I’ve tested the app itself but not for a real visit quite yet.) Here is the basic idea: you download the iPhone or Android app. The night before, you can “check-in” virtually. When you arrive, you get an alert that the room is ready and your key, which is already tied to your reservation, is waiting for you at the desk. 3. Hyatt Regency Minneapolis
