I have always wondered at the passion many people have to meet the celebrated(名人). The prestige(名声)you acquire by being able to tell your friends that you know famous men proves only that you are yourself of small account. The celebrated develop a technique to deal with the persons they come across. They show the world a mask, often an impressive one, but take care to conceal their real selves. They play the part that is expected from them, and with practice learn to play it very well, but you are stupid if you think that this public performance of theirs corresponds with the man within.
I have been attached, deeply attached, to a few people; but I have been interested in men in general not for their own sakes, but for the sake of my work. I have not regarded each man as an end in himself, but as material that might be useful to me as a writer. I have been more concerned with the obscure(无名小卒)than with the famous. They are more often
themselves. They have had no need to create a figure to protect themselves from the world or to impress it. Their idiosyncrasies(特质)have had more chance to develop in the limited circle of their activity, and since they have never been in the public eye it has never occurred to them that they have anything to conceal. They display their strangeness because it has
never struck them that they are strange. And after all it is with the common run of men that we writers have to deal; kings, presidents, commercial leaders are from our point of view very unsatisfactory. To write about them is a venture that has often attracted writers, but the failure that has attended their efforts shows that such beings are too special to form a proper ground for a work of art. They cannot be made real. The ordinary is the writer's richer field. Its
unexpectedness, its miracle, its endless variety a月brd unending material. The great man is too often all of a piece; it is the little man that is a bundle of contradictory elements. You never come to the end of the surprises he has in store for you. For my part I would much sooner spend a month on a desert island with a taxi driver than with a prime minister. 59. According to the first paragraph, the celebrated are .
A. worth meeting passionately B. of small account to your friends C. good at hiding their real selves D. born with the nature of lying
60. Which of the following is NOT the reason why the obscure are more often themselves according to the author?
A. They don't need to protect themselves from being hurt by the world. B .They develop their characters in the limited circle of their activity. C .They have never been the focus of attention publicly. D. They have never realized that their behavior is strange.
61.Why do writers prefer writing about the ordinary to writing about the celebrated? A. There are richer materials in the ordinary than in the celebrated. B. The celebrated are more difficult to be satisfied than the ordinary. C. The ordinary are often more contradictory than the celebrated.
D. The celebrated are more different from each other than the ordinary. 62. The author develops this article mainly by
A. exampling B. comparison C. reasoning D. definition

greeted the Diamond Jubilee(六+大庆)was, of course, especially memorable for me and my family.
It was humbling that so many chose to mark the anniversary of a duty which passed to me 60 years ago. People of all ages took the trouble to take part in various ways and in many nations. But perhaps most striking of all was to witness the strength of fellowship and friendship among those who had gathered together on these occasions.
On the barges and the bridges and the banks of River Thames there were people who had taken their places to cheer through the mist, undaunted(勇敢的)by the rain. That day there was a tremendous sense of common determination to celebrate, triumphing(胜利)over the elements.
That same spirit was also in evidence from the moment the Olympic flame arrived on these shores. The flame itself drew hundreds and thousands of people on its journey around the British Isles, and was carried by every kind of deserving individual, many nominated for their own extraordinary service.
As London hosted a splendid summer of sport, all those who saw the achievement and courage at the Olympic and Paralympic Games were further inspired by the skill, dedication, training and teamwork of our athletes. In pursuing their own sporting goals, they gave the rest of us the opportunity to share something of the excitement and drama.
We were reminded, too, that the success of these great festivals depended to some degree upon the dedication and e月brt of an army of volunteers. Those public-spirited people came forward in the great tradition of all those who devote themselves to keeping others safe, supported and comforted.
For many, Christmas is also a time for coming together. But for others, service will come first. Those serving in our armed forces, in our emergency services and in our hospitals, whose sense of duty takes them away from family and friends, will be missing those they love.
At Christmas I am always struck by how the spirit of togetherness lies also at the heart of the Christmas story. A young mother and a dutiful father with their baby were joined by poor shepherds and visitors from afar. They came with their gifts to worship(崇拜)the Christ child.
From that day on he has inspired people to commit themselves to the best interests of others. This is the time of year when we remember that God sent his only son 'to serve, not to be served'. He restored love and service to the centre of our lives in the person of Jesus Christ. It is my prayer this Christmas Day that his example and teaching will continue to bring people together to give the best of themselves in the service of others. I wish you all a very happy Christmas.,,

In 2010, as food prices were peaking for the second time in three years; governments., international agencies and non-government organizations blared out a new and powerful fact: there were a billion hungry people in the world and this, they said, in a period of plenty, was a disgrace. The United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), which had
estimated the figure in an annual report, even had the words `one billion hungry' hung in letters 50 feet high outside its headquarters building in Rome. The number of hungry people in the world is indeed a disgrace. But there was one problem with the precise figure:it was completely bogus(假的).This week, in its 2012 report on the state of food insecurity in the world, the FAO quietly revised it down to 868 million and got rid of the peak in the numbers that had supposedly occurred in 2008-10.
