Would you know what to do during a big earthquake? Scientists have some advice for us. If the ground begins shaking while you are driving, stop your car on the roadside and stay in it. If you are in a tall building, don't use the lift and never jump out of the windows. When you are in a living room, find a strong table or rush into a smaller room like washroom. Then lie down your body. Take care of your head. When you are in a public place, like supermarket or cinema, don't crowd in jam(拥挤) , or you may fall over and get hurt. Cross your arms to protect yourself. You can also find a place to hide.

After the main shake, quickly run out of the dangerous building for there will be small earthquakes. If you are safe, remember not to engage the phone line. Keep it free for rescue(援救) using. Don't go to the hospital if you are not badly hurt. Others will really need help. Take part in the rescue action if you can.

Living in a foreign culture can be exciting, but it can also be confusing(令人迷惑的).A group of Americans who taught English in other countries recently discussed their experiences. They found that miscommunications(沟通误解)were always possible, even over something as simple as “yes”and “no”.

On her first day in Micronesia, an island in the Pacific(太平洋), Lisa thought people weren’t paying any attention to her. The day was hot. She went into a store and asked, “Do you have cold drinks?” The woman there didn’t say anything. Lisa repeated the question. Still the woman said nothing. She later learned that the woman had answered her: She had raised her eyebrows(眉毛),which in Micronesia means “yes”.

Jan remembered an experience she had in Bulgaria, a country in Europe. She went to a restaurant that was famous for its cabbage. She asked the waiter, “Do you have cabbage today?” He nodded his head. Jan waited, but the cabbage never came. In that country, a nod means “no”.

Tom had a similar problem when arrived in India. After explaining something in class, he asked his students if they understood. They answered with many different nods and shakes of the head. He thought some people had not understood, so he explained again. When he asked again, they did the same thing. He soon found out that his students did understand. In India, people nod and shake their heads in different ways depending on(依据) where they come from. You have to know where a person is from to understand whether they mean “yes”or “no”. 5.The Americans teaching English in other countries found that they______. . In every country, there are thousands of people who want to help others out. Many join organizations run (管理) by their governments, such as the Peace Crops in the United States and Voluntary Service Overseas in Britain. Since the powerful earthquake took place in Sichuan, more than 200 thousand volunteers across China have helped there! They do all kinds of work or come up with ways to help improve life. Some offer their professional(专业的) skills for free. Others have no qualifications (资历), but they love to work hard to help.

One of the most famous volunteers in the world was Mother Teresa. She could be the best volunteer because she gave her life to help the poorest people of Calcutta. She helped the homeless, cared for the sick, gave out food, and became mother of those without families.

Now more and more teenagers actively look for volunteering opportunities, too. They volunteer because they think it will be fun or they will learn something. They also like the idea of being helpful to others, even if it is just handing out books for the teacher. As they get older, these reasons are still the same, but there are other important reasons for volunteering such as learning on-the-job, getting work experience, and improving their social life.
