Directions: Read the following passages and answer the questions
Passage One
How men first learned to invent words is unknown; in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words.
The power of words, then, lies in their associations (联想) —the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meanings for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something to us increases.
Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music, and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should, therefore, learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly and vulgar (庸俗的).
31. The origin of language is ______. A. a legend handed down from the past B. a matter that is hidden or secret C. a question difficult to answer D. a problem not yet solved

34. Which of the following statements about the real poet is NOT true? A. He is no more than a master of words.

Passage Two
Friends play an important part in our lives and although we may take the friendship for granted,we often don’t clearly understand how we make friends. Although we get on well with many people,we are usually friends with only a very few—for example, the average number of friends among students is about 6 per person. In all the cases of friendly relationships, two people like one another and enjoy being together but beyond that, the degree of intimacy (亲密) between them and the reasons for their shared interest vary greatly. As we get to know people,we take into consideration things like age, race, economic condition, social position, and intelligence. Although these factors are not of first importance,it is more difficult to get on with people when there is an
obvious difference in age and background.
Some friendly relationships can be kept on argument and discussion, but it is usual for close friends to have similar ideas and beliefs,to have attitudes and interests in common—they often talk about “being on the same wavelength”. It generally takes time to reach this point. And the more intimately involved people become, the more they rely on one another. People want to help friends and hate to break a promise. Equally, friends have to learn to put up with annoying habits and to accept differences of opinion.
In contrast with marriage, there are no friendship ceremonies (仪式) to strengthen the relationship between two people. But the supporting and understanding of each other that results from shared experiences and emotions does seem to create a powerful tie, which can overcome differences in background, and break down barriers of age, class or race. 36. According to the author ______.

vary widely
C. friends need to know all these things
D. these are the most important factors to make friends
38. In Paragraph 2, “being on the same wavelength” means ______. A. using the same frequency while talking
B. keeping the same friendly relationship as other people do C. having similar ideas, beliefs, attitudes and interests D. having the same background
39. Which of the following is false according to the passage ? A. Even friends may have differences of opinions. B. Friends never argue with each other.
