Starbucks says it uses one billion plastic straws(吸管) every year, but it plans to stop the use of plastic straws in each of its 28，000 stores across the globe. Starbucks’
announcement comes just a week after Seattle, the city where the first Starbucks opened, forbade plastic straws.
In order to replace the straws, Starbucks has developed a new lid(盖子) for some of its drinks like iced coffee and tea. Actually, the lid has a raised lip. Some people have compared the new lids to “adult sippy cups”， CNN Business reported.
Starbucks is always saying it is a company that cares much about the environment. In recent years, awareness about the effect that plastic is having on the environment—in particular, the ocean—has caused scientists to sound the alarm about a need to curb the use of plastics.
“What we realize is that these billions of little things in the ocean, such as one man’s toothbrush, one lady’s comb, all can cause the problem，” Emily Penn said. She is the co－founder of an expedition(探险队)．“But what makes us happy is that we can solve it well through our daily actions. We need billions of small actions—just little daily things to reduce the pollution.”
Customers who still want to enjoy a Starbucks drink with a straw will be able to request one, but it won’t be plastic.Instead, they will be given a straw made from paper or other eco－friendly materials.
