People learn English for the opportunity for better life, a job, to be able to pay for school or put better food on the table.
4. Why is learning English important for students taking the college entrance examination
(Gaokao)?
Students’ scores on this one test literally determine their future. 25 percent of the grade in Gaokao, the college entrance examination, is based on English.
5. In what way is English becoming the language of problem-solving?
With English one can become part of a wider conversation: a global conversation about global problems like climate change or poverty, or hunger or disease. Therefore, English has become the language of problem-solving.

Advice on learning English
?Task 2: Watch the second part of the video clip and complete the following sentences.
And I found some real differences. Of course, the adults have, um, more traditional based, traditional form of education that they base their form of learning on. Also, in many cases they’re more hesitant to speak. They’re a little bit more embarrassed, and they want to make sure that they have the structure of the grammar. However, the young children are like sponges. They really just want to soak up every piece of the information. They’re not afraid of making mistakes as are the older people. It is so much easier to learn a language when you’re a child.

1. Why do some people take private lessons with a tutor?
In some ways, it’s great to have a tutor individually because you can have somebody work with you one-on-one.
2. What’s the advantage of taking a class with students from all over the world?
You can communicate with other people. You can learn about other cultures, in addition to the American culture.
