Passage 2
There are many links between the growing population and worsening environment, partly because an ever-increasing number of people depend on a fixed natural resource base in order to live.
“The United Nations predicts that the global population, presently at 6 billion, will peak at about 10 billion in the next century and then become stable and even decrease.” It is understandable that even if food crops increase sufficiently, other renewable resources, including many fisheries and forests, are already under pressure.
“Our food production doubled from 1961 to 1964, but there are still people who go hungry”. This is because human population has increased more rapidly than the food production. Resources are an important environmental concern, which range from water and soil to different kinds of minerals. These materials are very basis of modern civilization.
4
As the world population grows, demand for mineral and energy resources climbs. Resources are commonly divided into two groups. Some are classified as renewable, which means they can be replenished over relatively short time spans such as water, sun. By contrast, many other resources are classified as non-renewable. Important metals such as iron, copper fall into this group. Although these and other resources continue to form, the processes that create tem are so slow that significant deposits take millions of years to come into being.
How long will the remaining supplies of basic resources last? Can alternatives be found? If we are to cope with an increasing demand and a growing world population, it is important that we have some understanding of our present and potential resources.
56. Which of the following statements is NOT true? ______ A. worsening environment is related to growing population. B. A lot of renewable resources are already under pressure. C. Water and soil is not an environment concern. D. demand for mineral and energy resources is rising with the growing population. 57. What do we learn from “Our food production doubled from 1961 to 1964, but there are still people who go hungry”? ______ A. There is not enough food in the world.

59. Some resources are classified as non-renewable because ______ A. if they are used up they will disappear forever. B. the processes that create them are very slow. C. they are not available any more.
D. they can be replenished over relatively short time spans.
60. What’s the author’s attitude toward the issue of the resources? ______ A. Worried B. Indifferent C. Positive D. Negative
Passage 3
America is in no immediate danger of “running out of water”. People in the West have been aware that water is a precious commodity and must be conserved. In the damp East, an excess of water led to complacency until two factors created concern over our water supply. First, the periods of drought from the 1961 to 1966 in the Northeast affected crop production and used up the surface and ground water supplies. Second, attention was called to rapid increases in the rates of pollution of these waters resulting from increased urban and industrial growth. As a result, there is an increasing awareness of the need for conserving the quantity and quality of our nation’s water supplies.
Water is a renewable resource, but it is not exhaustible. When used for municipal,
