industrial, or agricultural purposes, it is not destroyed, but generally finds its way back into our water supply. This used water now carries some waste materials. These dirty waters are often dumped into large bodies of water or are disposed of on land. In the latter instance, evaporation concentrates some of the wastes on the soil surface. On the other hand, water moving through the soil will eventually carry some of the wastes down into the ground water supplies. Eventually, all water evaporates and later returns to the earth as rain or snow in a relatively purer state.

Through this never-ending cycle, there is just as much water in this country now as there ever was. The amount, however, does not increase. Our rapid population growth and our agricultural and industrial expansion have caused our water needs to soar. By withdrawing water from streams too quickly, we have in some instances upset the balance of nature’s built-in renewal processes for conserving water. As a result, some of our streams and lakes have become “wet deserts.” There is still plenty of water in them, but its water is so polluted that it supports almost no life at all. 61. The passage is mainly about_____. A. water resources of the United States B. the renewal processes of water in mature C. the importance of water conservation D. water pollution in America

Passage 4

Man is a land animal, but he is also closely tied to the sea. Throughout history the sea has served the needs of man. The sea has provided man with food and a convenient way to travel to many parts of the world. Today, nearly two-thirds of the

6

world’s population lives within 80 kilometers of the sea coast.

In the modern technological world, the sea offers many resources to help mankind survive (=continue to live). Resources on land are beginning to be used up. The sea, however, still can be hoped to supply many of man’s needs.

The list of riches of the sea yet to be developed by man’s technology is impressive. Oil and gas explorations have been carried out for nearly 30 years. Valuable amounts of minerals exist on the ocean floor ready to be mined.

Fish farming promises to be a good way to produce large quantities of food. The culture of fish and shellfish is an ancient skill practiced in the past mainly by Oriental people.

Besides oil and gas, the sea may offer new sources of energy. Experts believe that the warm temperature of the ocean can be used in a way similar to the steam in a steamship. Ocean currents and waves offer possible use as a source of energy.

Technology is enabling man to explore ever more deeply under the sea. The development of strong, new materials has made this possible.

The technology to harvest the sea continues to improve. Experts believe that by the year 2000 the problems that prevent us from exploiting fully the food, minerals, and energy sources of the sea will be largely solved. 66. What is the beat title for the passage? A. Needs of Man. B. Sea Harvest and Food

C. Sea and Sources of Energy D. Sea Exploring Technology.

67. It can be inferred from the passage that ______.

A. man hasn't completely made use of the riches of the sea B. technology for exploring the sea has been solved C. harvesting rice in the sea will be made possible D. in the near future man can live on the ocean floor

A. To illustrate that man can make use of sources of energy from the sea. B. To show that a steamship is better than other kinds of ships. C. To argue that man should use steamships.

D. To indicate that it is warmer in the ocean than on land.

69. According to the author, technology is important because ______. A. resources on land are running short in ten years B. man can use it to explore the deeper sea C. it is a lot of fun diving into the sea

D. ancient people used it to explore the sea

70. According to the author, when will the problems to explore the deeper sea largely be solved?

A. In the next generation. B. At the end of the 20th century.

C. In the near future. D. By the middle of the 21st century. 7

Passage 5

Can animals be made to work for us? Some scientists think that one day animals

may be trained to do a number of simple jobs that are now done by human beings. They pointed out that at a circus(马戏团),for example, we may see elephants, monkeys, dogs and other animals doing quite skillful things. Perhaps you have seen on television or in a film. If you watch closely, you may notice that the trainer always gives the animal a piece candy or a piece of fruit as a reward. The scientists say that many different animals may be trained to do a number of simple jobs if they know they will get a reward for doing them.

Of course, as we know, dogs can be used to guard a house, and soldiers in both old and modern times have used geese to give a warning by making a lot of noise when a stranger or an enemy comes neat. But it may be possible to train animals to work in factories. In Russia, for example, pigeons, which are birds with good eyesight, are being used to watch out for faults in small steel balls that are being made in one factory. When the pigeon sees a ball which looks different from others, it touches a steel plate with its beak. This turns on a light to warn people in the factory. At the same time a few seeds are given as a reward. It takes three to five weeks to train a pigeon to do this and one pigeon can inspect 3000 to 4000 balls an hour.

Apes(猿) have been used in America in helping to make cars, and scientists believe that these large monkeys may be used one day to gather crops and even drive trains.

71. What made scientists think animals can be made to work for us one day? A. Animals are very skillful at a circus. B. They are big and strong.

C. Some animals are as clever as human beings.

D. Animals can be trained because they like to get something as a reward. 72. The trainer usually gives the animal a piece of candy or fruit __________. A. when it is hungry B. before it plays a trick

C. when it starts to play a trick D. after it has done the trick

73. The “reward” in the passage means _________. A. an honor given for doing something B. money paid for doing something C. attention paid to good conduct

D. something given in return for work

74. Many animals may be trained to so simple jobs if they know ________. A. who their trainers are

B. they will be praised by their trainers C. they will get a reward D. something dangerous will happen to them 75. Which of the following is NOT true?

8

A. Scientists believe apes may drive trains someday. B. Apes have worked in some factories.

C. Apes may one day be used to gather crops, D. An ape is not a large monkey. Passage 6

The average North American driver travels 12,000 miles per year. In order to get the maximum life out of an automobile, you must provide it with proper maintenance. Proper maintenance can reduce air pollution, extend the value of the vehicle, save on fuel bills, prevent breakdowns, and lead to better performance.

You should change the oil in all of your vehicles every 3,000 miles. Whenever you change the oil you can also change the oil filter. Oil filter remove dirt and debris (废物,垃圾) from oil. As the car runs the oil filter will become clogged with excess debris from the oil. In order for an engine to run, it also requires air. This air must be filtered to stop dirt from damaging the engine. Every time you change the vehicle’s oil you should inspect the car for any unexpected wear and tear.

Due to the performance and the sheer heat of combustion car engine become very hot. Anti-freeze(防腐剂,抗凝剂) is used as a coolant for your vehicle system. This coolant should be replaced every two years. By doing that you extent the life of your radiator (散热器). Other fluids that require maintenance at 60,000 miles include brake fluid, and power steering fluid.

The use of properly inflated and well maintained tires is critical. The tire that holds the car to the road is your first line of safety. Tires usually have a expectancy(寿命) which dictated by the manufacturer. It is recommended that you follow this life expectancy which usually averages 30,000 miles.

A vehicle should be driven properly by no exerting extra stress. Extra stress can lead to overheating. Overheating is the prime cause of premature life of belts, gaskets(密封垫), hoses, and seals. If any of these parts become a problem it is a much better idea to replace the part than to repair it.

76. On average, how many times a year should a North American driver changes their oil? ______

A. 4 B. 5 C. 3 D.9

77. How often should you inspect your car for internal damage? ______ A. Once a year B. Twice a year

C. Four times a year D. Three times a year 78. What fluid helps stabilize the temperature of your car? ______

A. Brake fluid B. Power steering fluid C. Transmission fluid D. Antifreeze

79. How can driving excessive speeds damage your automobile internally? ______ A. They premature life of automobile parts and devices. B. They burn the tires.

C. They extend the life expectancy of radiator. D. They clog the oil filter.

80. Following manufacturers guidelines, after how many oil changes would you

9

expect the basic tire needs to be replaced? ______

A. 5 B.8 C. 9 D.10
