Heavy rainfall from El Nino could help farmers in California who are suffering from the drought. An intense(极端的) weather pattern brought on by the climate system EI Nino could be the most powerful one on record, climate scientists said last week. The effect of El Nino is likely to lead to warmer temperatures and more rainfall, which could bring welcome relief(缓解) to a dry California.
\, above normal sea surface temperatures across the Pacific have continued to increase,\Administration's (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center. \(预测) this El Nino could be among the strongest EI Ninos in the historical record.\
Normally, winds blow strongly from east to west along the equator(赤道) in the Pacific Ocean. This causes warm water to pile up in the western part of the Pacific. In the eastern part of the Pacific deeper, colder water gets pulled up from below to replace(代替) the warm water. More flooding may occur this year due to effects from EI Nino.
While strong storms can cause serious problems like flooding and mudslides, many in California would welcome wetter weather. The state is in the midst of an historic four-year drought, which is turning lawns brown and drying up streams and wells.
California state climatologist Michael Anderson says there is a 50 percent chance that this year's EI Nino could deliver a wet winter for the state. Since 1958, there have been seven EI Nino systems; three wet, three dry, and one average. Anderson says it's too soon to predict whether relief will come in the form of a wet winter season.
For now, California residents are cautiously(谨慎地) optimistic(乐观的). Ryan Jacobsen is the executive director of the Fresno County Farm Bureau. He says farmers aren't counting on scientists' predictions as a sure thing. While early signs point to a good winter ahead, he said, farmers aren't fooled that El Nino always brings about wet winters. \changing,\
