Canadians have a reputation for being polite and mellow people. We’ve been told we sometimes apologize too much. We are, for the most part, much quieter than our American cousins, who tend to leave fairly strong impressions on the people and places they come across.

But mention hockey (曲棍球) in any conversation and all bets are off. Hockey is more than just a sport and pastime (消遣) to millions of Canadians;describing it as a way of life is a good start. There are outdoor and indoor ice inks (冰球场).in almost every community across the country. There is year-round media coverage of hockey. Hockey has even become a common subject in our literature. The theme is so important that Michael P.J. Kennedy, a lecturer in

English at the University of Saskatchewan, has created a course called “Reading Culture: Hockey in Canadian Literature”. And those of us who grew up in Canada no doubt remember sitting on the edge of our seats as our home team played in overtime. It seemed like everything depended on one golden goal - especially if it was during the Stanley Cup season. Some of us even went on the ice ourselves when we were young and played the sport with the full support of our enthusiastichockey moms and dads.

We love hockey so much that sometimes we throw common sense out the window and forget that we are supposed to be polite and, yes, civilized. Canadianshave taken to the streets and rioted (闹事) several times in the past over lostStanley Cup games. For example, in 2011, shop windows were smashed and cars were burned in Vancouver because our team, the Canucks, lost to the Boston Bruins. Canadians also riot when we win, like in 1993 when the MontrealCanadiens beat the Los Angeles Kings. If this sounds confusing to you, don’t worry. Not many Canadians

understand just what it is about hockey that makes a good number of us go crazy at certain times of the year.

It’s difficult to explain why the game causes such passions. Many have tried to understand the reasons why a sport that commonly features great violence has so many fans and admirers in a country full of people with a global reputation for being “too nice” and respectful The only sure thing that can be said about hockey and Canada is that both have a long history together, and that is something that will never change.

60.According to the article, while watching a hockey game, Canadians________. A. behave themselves well most of the time

B. enjoy the process of the game rather than the outcome C. are likely to go wild whether their team wins or loses D. don’t in the streets unless the team they support has won 61.How is the article’s argument mainly developed? A.By giving examples. B.By making comparisons.

C.By analyzing causes and effects.

D.By describing events in the order in which they happened.

A child’s nap often provides a much-needed rest for parents too, time for an uninterrupted phone call, or a rest on the sofa. And naps have to be a good thing for preschools, surely, since they need to take a rest and get enough sleep for their brains to develop. Short naps have also been shown to be good for adults - improving alertness and reaction times.

So it feels counterintuitive for a review of 26 studies to conclude that nappingin children over two years of age may not be a good idea at all. The review saysthat after two years of age, napping is associated with going to sleep late at night, poorer quality sleep and waking earlier. So should we discourage naps in preschool children - even if they really seem to need one?

Although the review talks about the effects of napping on two-year-olds, most of the

evidence in review actually comes from studies on three-year-olds. Also, theauthors of the view article are clear that the research on children’s naps is of poorquality. Some studies rely on parents’ remembering how much their children slept, or are for very short periods.

A study published in the journal of Attention Disorders in February suffers from some

methodological shortcomings (for instance small numbers - only 28 children between the ages of three and four, and only for five days), but is at leasta randomized (任意的) controlled trial, using actigraphs worn on the wrist(手腕) to objectively measure sleep. It found that children who missed their naps slept better at night and scored higher in studies of memory and attention.

Dr. Mark Mahone, one of the authors, says that sleep at night may be of a better quality than during daytime napping. Having a sound sleep at night, he says, provides a greater proportion of the slow-wave, restorative sleep that promotes brain development and reinforces (增强) what has been learned the day before. The study also found that the children who went without naps did not sleep more at weekends.

I could never get my children to nap, but for parents who can, there is no reason to stop. Mahone says that more research is needed before anyone starts making recommendation, and children's sleep requirements are known to be variable.

62. The word “counterintuitive” in Paragraph 2 most probably means ________. A. meaningless B. revolutionary C. unreasonable D. difficult

63. What does the author think of the study published in Attention Disorders? A.Its objects are too young to take the test.

B.It has enough objects to produce the results.

C.It provides various ways to help adults to take naps. D. Its findings are reliable due to the actigraphs.

64. According to Dr. Mark Mahone, a better-quality night sleep will result in________. A.higher efficiency of learning B.frequent rests on the sofa

C.more serious attention disorder D.fewer daytime naps at weekends

65. The author talks mainly about his or her________. A.opinions on whether children needs naps B.comments on some studies on children’s naps C.various systemic studies on children’s naps

D.understanding of the functions of children’s naps 第二节(共5小题,每小题1分,共5分)
