阅读能力与写作能力专练

Ⅰ.阅读理解

American astronomer Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto in 1930.From 1930 until 2006,Pluto sat comfortably beyond Neptune as the ninth planet in our solar system. In 2006,however,changes were made. The truth is,nothing about Pluto changed, but the definition(定义) of a planet did.So Pluto no longer fit the definition of a planet.

According to new rules adopted by the International Astronomical Union,a celestial body(天体) must meet the following standards in order to qualify as a planet:1.A planet must be round.2.A planet must orbit the sun.3.A planet must have “cleared the neighborhood” of its orbit. This means that as a planet travels, its gravity sweeps and clears the space around it of other objects.

Pluto follows the first two rules:It is round, and it orbits the sun.It does not, however, follow the third rule.It has not yet cleared the neighborhood of its

orbit in space.Because it does not follow this rule,Pluto is no longer considered a planet.

Don’t feel too sad for Pluto, though. It has a new title—“dwarf planet”.Dwarf planets are celestial bodies that only meet the first two standards in the new definition of a planet.Dwarf planets, like Pluto, have not yet cleared the neighborhoods of their orbits—and still have some cleaning to do if they will ever become “true” planets. The following are facts about Pluto:

★Pluto is about the size of the moon.

★It takes approximately 248 Earth years for Pluto to make one trip around the sun.Since astronomers discovered Pluto in 1930,it has not completed one trip around the sun.It still has more than 150 Earth years to go!

★Pluto is so far away that it takes more than five hours for light from the sun to reach it.The sun’s light reaches Earth in only eight minutes! 1.What happened to Pluto in 2006? A.It became the ninth planet. B.It wasn’t regarded as a planet. C.It became different from Neptune. D.The official didn’t like it any longer.

2.The second paragraph is mainly to tell us . A.the standards of a planet B.the characteristics of Pluto C.a planet and its gravity D.several kinds of planets

3.We can learn from the fourth paragraph that dwarf planets . A.turn around other planets B.keep their orbits clear C.have no neighborhoods D.must be in a round form

4.Which of the following is TRUE of Pluto? A.It is about as big as the moon. B.It can remove the space around it. C.It takes an Earth year to finish one trip. D.It is much nearer to the sun than the earth. 5.What would be the best title for the text?

A.What is Pluto Really Like? B.When will Pluto Become a Planet? C.Why is Pluto No longer a Planet? D.How Long Does Pluto Exist in Space? Ⅱ.阅读表达

(2016·天津市耀华中学月考)

When you get in your car,you reach for it.When you’re at work, you take a break to have a moment alone with it.When you get into a lift, you play with it.

Cigarette?Cup of coffee? No,it’s the third most addictive thing in modern life:the cell phone. And experts say it is becoming more difficult for many people to control their longing to hug it more tightly than most of their personal relationships.

The costs are becoming more and more evident, and I don’t mean just the monthly bill.Dr.Chris Knippers,a counselor at the Betty Ford Center in Southern California, reports that the overuse of cell phones has become a social problem not much different from other harmful addictions:a barrier to one-on-one personal contact, and all escape from reality.

Sounds extreme, but we’ve all witnessed the evidence:the person at a restaurant who talks on the phone through an entire meal, ignoring his kids around the table;the woman who talks on the phone in the car, ignoring her husband;the teen who texts messages all the way home from school, avoiding contact with kids all around him.

Jim Williams,an industrial sociologist based in Massachusetts, notes that cell-phone addiction is part of a set of symptoms in a widening gulf of personal separation. He points to a study by Duke University researchers that found one-quarter of Americans say they have no one to discuss their most important personal business with.Despite the growing use of phones,e-mail and instant messaging,in other words,Williams says studies show that we don’t have as many friends as our parents.“Just as more information has led to less wisdom, more acquaintances via the Internet and cell phones have produced fewer friends.” he says.

6.What has become a social problem according to the passage?(No more than 5 words) 7.What costs do people have to pay for their cell phones according to the passage? (No more than 15 words)
