Alva had been warned that a storm was coming, but there was little that would keep him form boarding his boat. In one day, he’d make enough money to survive for a full week.

As he sailed through the waves some 75 miles from land, Alva let out his two-mile-long fishing line. The storm was gaining strength on land but had yet to reach the en far offshore. That changed around 1 a.m. Waves rocked the small boat, which began to lean sideways like an amusement park ride. ―Get us out of here!‖ Cordoba screamed to Alva. ―Let’s go back!‖

With the winds and waves kicking up, the boat began to fill with water. Alva had Cordoba bail. While he pulled in the fishing line. But the crashing waves filled their boat with water faster than they could empty it. Forcing Alva to make a radical decision. He cut the line, dumping thousands of dollars’ worth of equipment and fish into the sea. He then pointed the boat toward his home port, Chocohuital, six hours away.

He was figuring out a route through the vicious(不完善的)shoreline surf when the motor coughed. ―I couldn’t believe it,‖ says Alva. ―We were 15 miles off the coast, and the motor died.‖ High waves raised and dropped the boat, sending the men crashing into the sides. Bees are responsible for about 30 percent of the world’s food supply. Our fruits and vegetables would not grow without bees. Many farmers use pesticides(杀虫剂)to protect food plants from insects. Studies have shown that these chemicals are also hurting the bees and showing up in the world’s honey supply. And researchers are wondering how that could affect us.

A recent study found evidence of these pesticides in most of the world’s bees. David Goulson is a professor of biology at Britain’s University of Sussex. He says the chemicals harm the ability of bees to find their way. ―These chemicals attack the brain of the insects and they interfere(阻碍)with their ability to learn and to navigate, which is really important for a bee. If they get lost, then they’re as good as dead.‖

Goulson says the problem seems to come from new genetically engineered seeds. He says some of the seeds are covered with pesticides. ―So the idea is the farmer buys the seed, pre-coated with pesticide, he sows it in the ground, and the chemical is water soluble, it dissolves into the soil and the water in the soil, and then it’s supposed to be sucked up by the plant, and it goes to all parts of the plant including, unfortunately, the nectar(花蜜)and the pollen(花粉).‖ And that pollen ends up on the bees.

Swedish researchers found the chemicals in 75% of all the world’s honey. They even found it on the French island of Tahiti, a place not known for industrial farming.

Goulson says it is not just bees that are dying off. He says researchers are also seeing ―big declines of farmland birds, butterflies and so on.‖

24. Studies have found the following results except that . A. pesticides are doing harm to the bees

B. bees produce 30 percent of the world’s food supply C. chemicals are found in 75% of all the world’s honey D. chemicals are even found in the honey produced in Tahiti

25. Based on these findings, what may the researchers and the govemment probably do next? A. Forbid the sale of honey. C. Limit the use of pesticides.

B. Provide much healthier food. D. Advocate industrial farming.
