When I was fifteen years old, I came to Kenya and began to study at Hillcrest Secondary School, a British-patterned international school. I still remember my first day at Hillcrest. Everything was different from my life in Beijing. I was quite surprised by the size of Hillcrest. And the school was full of different kinds of African plants. The lovely environment attracted not only international students but also wildlife like monkeys.
However,it wasn’t just about enjoying the beauty of nature. Although my English was better than that of most Chinese students at that time, learning in a completely different environment wasn’t easy. Not far from the beach of Tulum, Mexico, there is a cave (洞穴) called Sac Actun. It is more than 4,000 years old and may be the longest underwater cave in the world.
“Sac Actun” means “white caves” in one Mayan language. Many tourists come to visit the cave every year. They swim in the clear underground water and watch small fish swimming in the wonderful underground world.
Recently, a team of scientists found a connection (连接) between Sac Actun and another large underwater cave near it. In the past, people thought Sac Actun was about
263 kilometers long, but now scientists say the cave is connected to a 83-km-long cave — Dos Ojos. This would make Sac Actun a 347-km-long cave.
The connection between the two caves was reported after the scientists spent months working in the water. The finding can help people learn about the ancient Mayan population. They lived in parts of Mexico and other places in the area. There are hundreds of Mayan relics(遗迹) in the cave, according to Guillermo de Anda, the director of the team. “It allows us to learn more about the ancient Maya people — how their cities appeared,” said de Anda.
It is also possible that Sac Actun could get bigger. The scientists think that the cave might be connected to three other underwater caves. All of them are near one another by the city of Tulum.
