●1 fall v. 下落；跌落

Alice followed it and fell down a hole in the ground. Between July and August, oil prices fell 0.2 percent.

fall是不及物动词，其过去式和过去分词分别为fell和fallen。fall还可表示气温、价格等的下降。

[拓展] (1)fall用作系动词时，后接形容词作表语，表示“进入(某种状态)”。 (2)常用短语有fall off, fall down, fall asleep等。

(3)在美式英语中，fall也可用作名词，意为“秋天”。 ●2 follow v. 跟随；紧跟 Please follow me to read the story.

[探究] follow为及物动词，常用搭配为“follow sb. to do sth.”意为“跟随某人做某事”。

[拓展] (1)follow作动词，还有其他意思：

①领会；听懂。I didn't follow you. Please explain it again. ②沿着……走。Follow this road until you get to the bridge. ③听从；遵循。I decide to follow her advice.

(2)following为形容词，意为“接着的；下述的”。 Please finish the following exercises by yourselves.

句中if是连词，意为“是否”，常引导宾语从句，放在see, ask, remember, know, wonder等动词的后面，通常可与whether互换。 I wonder if/whether it will be clear tomorrow.

if 作连词，意为“如果”时，常引导条件状语从句。在含有if引导的条件状语从句的主从复合句中，主句若是一般将来时，if从句用一般现在时表示将来。 If he comes, I'll tell him the news.

●1 twice adv. 两次；两倍

Once or twice she looked into her sister's book. 。 Please take the medicine twice a day. [拓展] (1)once表示“一次”， 三次或三次以上一般用“基数词＋times(次)”来表示。如：five times 五次，ten times 十次。“每月一次”表示为“once a month”，中间不用介词in。“一天三次”表示为“three times a day”。 They go shopping once a week.

(2)对含有twice, once, sometimes, seldom, usually, never等的频度副词提问时用how often。

have nothing to do 意为“无事可做”。

[拓展] have nothing to do with… 意为“与……无关；与……毫不相干”。 He had nothing to do with this accident.

●3 Alice got up and ran across the field after it.

run across 意为“跑过”，介词across意为“穿过”，表示动作是在某个物体的表面进行的，常和表示“走”之类的动词(如walk, run, fly, jump等)连用。 [拓展] (1)across的动词形式是cross，相当于go/walk across。 You must be careful when you cross the street.

＝You must be careful when you go/walk across the street.

(2)through是介词，也指“穿过”，但它表示的动作是在某一物体的立体空间内进行的。

The ball went through the window into the room.

●4 It was too dark for her to see anything.

“sb./sth.＋too＋adj./adv.＋to＋ v．”表示“某人/某物太……而不能……”。此结构 用肯定形式表示否定意义，后面不定式的逻辑主语可用for引出。 Wei Ming said English was too difficult(for him) to learn well.
