civilization exists, and those who are without the conch live without civility. In the process of asking his glasses back with Ralph, Piggy was killed by Jack's tribe. The conch ended up shattered so that any signs of civilization that may have been left disappear at that moment. This suggests that civilization was defeated by savagery. B. The Fire
In this story, the fire is the hope of being saved and also the symbol of civilization. Ralph repeatedly emphasized the importance of it, and required the other children to keep it on. However, the kids who were supposed to guard the fire were asked by Jack to go hunting a wild boar with him, thus leading to the fire out. Therefore they lost a chance of being saved by a ship passing by. It indicates that the fire of civilization was out.
At that time Jack's tribe had already become savages, they were eating the boar and having savage dancing, while Ralph, who was supposed to blame Jack of causing the fire out, could not resist his appetite but ate the boar with them. We know Jack is a symbol of savagery and Ralph a symbol of civilization, so here was a compromise of civilization with savagery.
The fire which should be used as a signal for being rescued was employed by Jack as a mere means of cooking food. From this we can see the function of civilization degenerate into the simplest way of just satisfying human appetite. C. The \
The story of the \east” was first told by a boy with a birthmark, who saw something like a snake walking in the woods. Therefore the seeds of terror grew in the hearts of the children. Simon went to the woods alone after being separated from Ralph and came to his favorite wooded glade. Then he began to think about the meaning of life and what had happened on this island. Later just at this place, he witnessed the cruelty of the group of people headed by Jack. They killed a wild boar and inserted its head on the pickets as an oblation to the \then ran away hastily.
Facing the head of the wild boar which was covered with flies, Simon faintly heard a voice coming from the bottom of his heart, said:\knew, didn’t you? I'm part of you? Close, close, close! I'm the reason why it's no go? Why things are what they are?\(Lord of the Flies, 80) Yes, the head of the wild boar was the lord of the flies, which symbolized evil and savagery. Simon gradually realized the truth that evil came from people themselves, from the darkest side of their heart. Climbing on the top of the hill where the children thought was the habitation of the

From the top of the hill he could see the kids doing something around the fire. Jack and other boys were eating the pork by the fire. Later, they began to have a carnival with singing and dancing. Simon stumbled out of the woods and ran toward them, only to be surrounded by this group of people and be regarded as the \craziness, they screamed and shouted:\Cut his throat! Spill his blood! Do him in!\Lord of the Flies, 85) They killed Simon by their teeth, their hands as well as their sticks. Simon left the world with his wisdom and the truth that he would never have a chance to tell. From this we can see the fire of wisdom was put off by savagery completely. And at the same time their ignorance killed the truth and evil controlled the world. From then on the good human nature among these children began to decease in their hearts, they turned into real savages.
III. Reasons for the Recession from Civilization to Savagery
A. The Terror in the Human Hearts
What caused these innocent children to give up civilization and step into savagery? Was it just because they could eat meat by joining in Jack's tribe?
If one tried to put himself in the children’s situation, one would find it terrifying. Under the situation as human life was threatened and they might be killed or eaten by the \beast”, having the hope of being rescued and used it to resist the terror was too unrealistic for them. However, in fact the fear was not coming from the \beast”, but from the loneliness in their hearts. In the end of chapter 8, Simon found the decayed head of the boar which was covered by hundreds of flies was just like the lord of the flies. Then lord of the flies said:\I’m part of you.\Lord of the

children was incapable of transforming nature without any tools. Facing the huge and powerful nature, they could only feel they were tiny and lonely.
In this story, this kind of loneliness was at peak on a lightning night when these boys were swallowed by the fear and loneliness, as a result their animal instinct was completely released. They were dancing and shouting: “Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!” (Lord of the

Flies, 103)As such, Simon was killed by all of them. Their behavior, of course, was no different
from the savages.
However, it is natural for the children to indulge into this kind of crazy state because the only way for them to conquer their fear was to abandon themselves and integrate into the group. Then the hope of being rescued and the civilization had no attraction to them any more, so they turned into savages.
B. The Scramble for Leadership
At the beginning of the novel, the children on the island could get along well with each other. But later because of their different ways of living and personalities, they were divided into two tribes. Ralph and Jack represented the two groups respectively, and the former symbolizes democracy and civilization, while the latter symbolizes tyranny and savagery. In the middle of this story, Jack went hunting the boars for living, he wanted to be the leader and asked Ralph to give him the conch shell, for it was the symbol of authority. After being rejected, he instigated the other kids to join in his tribe and took away Piggy's glasses. Then the two tribes became enemies. In the process of their fighting, Piggy was killed by Jack's tribe and the conch shell was scattered. Ralph had to hide himself everywhere in order not to be killed by them. At this juncture, Jack officially became the leader, their tribe dominated this island. It indicates that the dark side won the battle, civilization was defeated.
If the children had not separated, but rather worked in unity and helped one another, then what the consequence would have been? Maybe it would be different. This can also be regarded as a reason for the recession from civilization to savagery.
IV. Revelation from Lord of the Flies
What William Golding shows us is an epitome of the disaster of human society. As for what causes the disaster, Golding blames it to the evil nature of human beings. In this novel, the \symbolizes such evil, and just because people cannot face squarely their evil nature, tragedies happen over and over again. Perhaps it is easier to reveal the deepest side of human heart for Golding to take the innocent children as his leading characters in the novel. The boys' democratic consciousness which grew in the adult society soon declined after they lived on the island. That is because of the corruption of human nature, and the disappearance of their reasoning judgment and moral nature.

The most threatening thing to human is not the invisible evil but the evil which under the mask of so called \What prevents the advance of human society is human beings themselves. Similarly, what prevents culture from developing is the culture itself. The reason is that human beings always lack a correct cognition of the root of the \for them to fight against in all their life and it exists in everybody.
The ending of this story is a little sudden. The island was in the ocean of fire set by Jack's tribe and Ralph was about to have no place to hide. Here, maybe the readers would think these kids would surely be killed by the fire. But contrary to their expectation, they were all saved by the naval officer. \civilized and democratic adult society was back. Then the unsolved contradiction in this novel was resolved.\4 But in a deeper thinking, it is the war in the adult world that took these kids to the island, although the adults had more powerful democracy and civilization, they also had more crazy savagery and darker nature. They launched the nuclear war and damaged the civilization. The children's incident happened on the island was just the epitome of the adult society. These kids were taken back to the more civilized adult world, but the adult society would still face the eternal darkness of human nature. Well then, who will come to save them? Maybe this is what Golding wants to deliver to us.
With this his first novel, author William Golding wrote a novel that he could never surpass in greatness. Lord of the Flies is a novel about human nature. Too often I think, people jump to quick conclusions about the book and Golding's stand on human nature. \stance is too pessimistic\or \book is really gross.\What these people fail to realize is that Golding tried to paint a picture of human nature as he saw it. He wasn't making things up, nor was he particularly angry. He wrote Lord of the Flies to expose people to the atrocities that he witnessed in World War II.
One of the largest underlying principles in Lord of the Flies is, of course, human nature. William Golding gives the reader three interesting characters to analyze: Jack, Piggy, and Ralph. It's quite apparent as you read the novel that Golding must have read a little Sigmund Freud before writing Lord of the Flies. Let's start with Jack. Jack is the definite Id on the island. He wants to survive but he also wants to eat meat and have fun. Jack is clearly unable to control these urges and in turn has a pretty large influence on the other boys on the island. Piggy is the definite Superego on the island. Piggy is always referring to \my auntie...\and always
