hours. We traveled the way most people do: the fastest, shortest, easiest road, especially when I was alone with four noisy, restless kids who hates confinement(限制)and have strong opinions about everything.
Road trips felt risky, so I would drive fast, stopping only when I had to. We would stick to the freeways and arrive tired.
But then Banner, our lamb was born. He was rejected by his mama days before our planned trip to Boise. I had two choices: leave Banner with my husband, or take him with me. I had to take him with me.
That is how I found myself on the road with four kids, a baby lamb and nothing but my everlasting optimism to see me through. We took the country roads out of necessity. We had to stop every hour, let Banner shake out his legs and feed him. The kids chased him and one another. They?d get back in the car breathless and energized, smelling fresh from the cold air.
We explored side roads, catching grasshoppers in waist-high grass, or just simply looked out of the car windows at baby pigs following their mother, or fish leaping out of the water. Here was life. And new horizons(见识).
We eventually arrived at my parents? doorstep astonishingly fresh and full of stories
I grew brave with the trip back home. On an empty section of road, everyone started quarreling. I stopped the car, ordered all kids out and told them to meet me up ahead. I parked my car half a mile away and read my book in sweet silence.
Some road trips are by necessity fast and straight. But that trip with Banner opened our eyes to a world available to anyone adventurous enough to wander around and I found the best of myself. 31. A new study has found evidence of aggressive behavior in children who drink four or more servings of soft drinks every day. Information for the study came from the mothers of 3,000 5-year-olds. Researchers asked the women to keep a record of how many servings of soft drinks their children drank over a two-month period. The women were also asked to complete a checklist of their children's behavior.
The researchers found that 43 percent of the boys and girls drank at least one daily serving of soda, 4 percent of the youngsters had four or more sodas to drink every day.
Shakira Suglia is with Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health in New York City. She worked on the study with researchers from the University of Vermont and Harvard University School of Public Health. She says they found that children who drank the most soda were more than two times as likely as those who drank no soda to show signs of aggression.
\the children who consumed four or more soft drinks per day, we see an association between aggressive behaviors, attention problems and withdrawn behaviors.\
The aggressive behaviors included destroying possessions belonging to others, taking part in fights and physically attacking people.
The researchers have determined the link after considering factors like the child's age and sex. They have also considered other possible influence, such as whether the boys and girls are eating sweets or giving fruit drinks on a normal day. In addition, the researchers examined parenting styles and other social conditions that may be taking place in the home. Researchers are trying to find why young children who drink a lot of soda have behavior problems.
\ingredients in soda, a lot of ingredients that have not been examined in relation to behavior.\
An ingredient often found in soft drinks is caffeine, which helps to make people feel energetic. Suglia suggests that caffeine could cause the 5-year-olds to be more aggressive.
Earlier studies of young adults have found the highest sugar levels in those who carry weapons and show signs of negative social behavior.

39. 【答案】A,推理判断题,第1段讲到“3000个五岁小孩的母亲”(“the mothers of 3,000 5-year-olds”),并不是“3000个母亲”,故B错。第3段提到“children who drank the most soda were more than two times as likely as those who drank no soda to show signs of aggression.”,并非“完全没有攻击行为”,故C错。 D
A spelling mistake on a sign outside a state primary school had me banging my head in despair— but don?t be panicked into thinking state education is fundamentally disabled.
There?s a notice on our local park gate, made by a local state primary school pupil, saying:” There is know such thing as the poo fairy.” What a good idea —a campaign to encourage the dog-owners among us to pick up their dog?s waste! And what an attractive and eye-catching poster! But “KNOW poo fairy”? Why didn?t he/she realize that bad spelling is a worry? What?s even worse, it could easily bring joy to Mr. Gove?s heart, because it seems to prove him right: ordinary state schools are bad and academics are good. And the country may take his propaganda (宣传)seriously and show the panicking parents one bad spelling from a non-academy school, suggesting that it’s filled with wild and unqualified staff. The parents then will be scared that their children will be poorly educated, and must be marched straight into an academy —an institution full of exam results and undemocratic management. Don’t fall for it, parents. Like thousands of teachers in state schools, and local authorities, you can care about children’s education and standards of literacy, you can even love Latin, without singing up to the Gove brigade(队列).Just because he has had an insight into our terrors and recognized our dreams, it does mean that he just knows how to take us in and what works in his favor.
“That ?know poo? teacher has scored an own goal,” says Fielding, “and put the state school at a
seeming disadvantage.” Now you?re in a dilemma here. You?re caught between your enthusiasm for accurate grammar and your well-meaning social responsibilities”. Even Fielding doesn?t get it. You can have the two things together—high standards in comprehensives. We do not need academies. You can manage it!
