My understanding of journalism

What is journalism? Some people purely think “Journalism is a

industry in the modern world.” And other people say that it is a report，information and media. However, my understanding of journalism is completely different with them: journalism is one kind of complex thing. We can say journalism is a vehicle or information, but We can’t understand it as a media or industry simply in the meantime.

The journalism ,which is the need for people’s survival and

development, is one kind of universal social phenomenon. In our daily world, each person cannot live a life without journalism. Given we pay attention to the setting, we can find that each country, each social classy or each profession, needs to gain journalism every day. Only in that way ,can they obtain the survival and development in the society. For example：

In order to formulate the correct internal affairs, diplomatic general

and specific policies, a national leader has to know the international changing and obtain the reliably, comprehensively, and rich situation accurately.

A enterprise leader must realize the law and policy about his company as well as the market’s trend. So that he can arrange the enterprise’s production and management.

As a scientist，if only dose he research earnestly, and did not see the

new development in the scientific research, he will treat it as a new task to study, which was already solved . Therefore, the scientist should pay attention to the tendency of scientific research.

Living in the realistic society, we can find that all of our actions are

based on the new situations: the daily weather, the price change in

international situations. As

the saying goes: “The affairs of the family, of the state and of the world are all my concerns.” It means that journalism is not only the require of the statesmen, but also the living and social need.

Journalism has two in-born features: truth and newness. In the

modern world ,truth and newness decide the direction of the news, the journalistic character and morals, the medium form and the technological using. Therefore, those features are the most basic and nuclear request of the journalism.

Truth journalism lays claim to the qualities of truthfulness and accuracy. properties often implied by the term objectivity ,a concept used to legitimise the journalistic text while at the same time recognizing the multidimensional and elusive nature of “truth” .journalism asks to be accepted as, at the very least, an approximation to truth, and certainly close enough to the truth to be worthy of our trust in its integrity. Newness The journalistic statement also has to be new, if not in the facts presented then in the interpretation of those facts.

The news elements are the necessary material that constitute a

journalism. Like the facial features constitute a complete face, only journalism has five elements, can it be a complete news. The five elements including: the leading role of journalism (who), the happened affair (what), the time (when), the place (where), the reason (why). The five “w”, short for the journalistic elements, because they all begin with “w”. the five elements of journalism have two major functions :

First of all, they help journalists find out the main points of each fact

quickly in interviews. Most of the tine, interviewees cannot tell us the five elements methodically . Also, they may narrate wrongly in this process. In order to ensure the truth of the journalistic source, journalists must check those elements one by one from five aspects. Certainly, finding

The second, five elements help journalists grasp the focus of the

news quickly, especially in the writing of the news leads.

In our daily life, many people put the propaganda and journalism as

the same thing. Journalism and publicity, the two words, are often applied together. As a matter of fact, journalism is different from publicity. The essential difference between journalism and publicity is what journalism spreads is information ,while the publicity disseminate idea. Otherwise, they differ in the starting point, end-result, propagation mode and requirement. However, journalism need publicity, because they are closely linked. Whether China or foreign, the journalistic media not only spread news ,but also propagandize concepts.

According to the above all, we can see that journalism is a complex

thing. In a certain sense, journalism, like any anther narrative which is the world of human agency, is essentially ideological-a communicative vehicle for the transmission to an audience (intentionally or otherwise) not just of facts but of the assumptions, attitudes, beliefs and values of its maker(s), drawn from and expressive of a particular world-view. Because of this , many people simply consider it as the information and a means of mass communication. However, these things are belong to the thought foundation, we can’t negative these views completely.

At last, if you maintain ask me the understanding of journalism. A

kind of complex thing. It is so powerful and importance that can reflect the advantages and disadvantages of the modern society, transcend ideological level and point to a better future. In my eyes, Journalism, as an authored narrative, is at the same time an ideological force, communicating not just “the facts” but also a way of understanding and making sense of the facts. And since there is likely to be more than one way of understanding and interpreting even the most apparently neutral

ways of sense-making; an expression and reflection of the ideological “balance of forces” in a given society. Therefore, it becomes a urgent need, which can promote social progress and prosperity of human civilization. Now, in our country, with the development of society and the improvement of living level, people value and long for journalism than ever before.
