About 30 years ago, I left Cuba for the United States with my son. After getting settled finally in Brunswick, New Jersey, I enrolled(注册) my son in kindergarten. Several weeks later, my son’s teacher asked me to meet him at his office.

In the teacher’s office, and exchange of greetings was followed by his questions “ Is your son mentally retarded(弱智的)? Does he suffer from any kind of mental disability?”

Was he talking about my wonderful Scola? No, no, it can’t be. What a helpless, lonely moment! I told him that Scola was a quiet, sweet little boy, instead. I asked him why he was asking me all these questions.

My son could not follow the teacher’s directions, he told me, and thus, Scola was disrupting

B. Hot meals. C. Sandwiches.

the class. Didn’t he know my son did not speak English yet? He was angry “ Why hasn’t your son been taught to speak English? Don’t you speak English at home?”

No, I didn’t speak English at home, I replied. I was sure my son would learn English in a couple of months, and I didn’t want him to forget his native language. Well, wrong answer!

What kind of person would not speak in English to her son at home and at all times? “ Are you one of those people who come to this country to save dollars and sent them back to their country, never wanting to be a part of this society?”

Needless to say, I tried to tell him I was not one of “ those people.” Then he told me the meeting was over, and I left.

As I had expected, my son learned to speak English fluently before the school year was over. He went on to graduate from college and got a job, earning close to six figures. He travels widely and leads a well-adjusted, contented life. And he has benefited from being bilingual(双语的)。

Speaking more than one language allows people to communicate with others; it teaches people about other cultures and other places- something very basic and obviously lacking in the “educator” I met in New Jersey.

Brown cows may not actually make chocolate milk, but pink silkworms (蚕) do produce pink silk, a team of scientists has discovered. To see if they could produce pre-dyed silk—silk that comes colored, straight from the source—the team fed ordinary silkworms mulberry (桑树) leaves that had been sprayed (喷洒) with fabric (织物) dyes (染色剂). Out of seven tested dyes, only one worked, producing a thread that reminded me of pink-dyed hair.

And yes, the worms themselves take on some color before they produce silk. Their colorful diets did not affect their growth, the team, which included engineers and biologists from the CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory in India, reports in the journal ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering. (The researchers didn't look too deeply into how the dyes affected the silkworms' health. After all, silkworms die when people harvest their silk.)

The team made dyeing silk this way because coloring fabric normally uses large amounts of fresh water. The water gets polluted with dangerous chemicals in the process, requiring costly treatment before factories can send it back into waterways. Dyeing silk directly by feeding silkworms would avoid those water-washing steps. Scientists are just starting to study this idea. However, it remains to be seen if it's commercially successful. In this experiment, the Indian team tested seven dyes, which are cheap and popular in the industry.

The scientists found different dyes moved through silkworms' bodies differently. Some never made it into the worms' silk at all. Others colored the worms and their silk, but the color disappears before the silk

is turned into fabric. Only one dye, named “direct acid fast red”, showed up in the final, washed silk threads. By the time it made it there, it was a pleasant, light pink. 24.The text is most probably a(n) ________.

A.science report B.tourist guide

C.animal experiment D.fashion advertisement 25.Silkworms can produce pink silk because ________. A.they are born pink B.they are dyed pink C.they grow in pink water D.they are fed dyed food 26.Where is the experiment carried out?

A.In America. B.In India. C.In Israel. D.In China. 27.How many dyes have been proved successful in the experiment? A.One. B.Three. C.Five. D.Seven.

One new discovery after another has been over and over again plunging a hard-to-accept idea into scientists’ minds there might have been an even more advanced super prehistoric civilization in the remote past.

Discovery One ept in Topkapi Palace, Istanbul, Turkey is a unique ancient map, which was first discovered in the 18th century. On the map, only the Mediterranean area is accurately mapped while other places, such as America and Africa, are well out of shape. When studying in a deeper way, however, the scientists were amazed at finding the ancient map was actually a bird’s-eye map. Compared with the pictures of the earth taken by the Apollo 8 spacecraft, the Turkey map is exactly the repeat of them and the deformable boundaries of America and Africa agree well with those of the Apollo 8’s pictures. To scientists’ astonishment, the map even describes the complex landforms of the Antarctic covered with several-kilometer- thick ice, which is as like as two peas with the map made by the 1952 Antarctica expedition with the help of the sonic echo sounder. But the old map was made in the remote ancient times!

Discovery Two On the Lake Titicaca Plateau of South America lies the ruin of an ancient city, at the centre of which stands a huge red sandstone statue. Printed on it is a complete star map with hundreds of signs. Through years of study, scientists finally decoded the map and signs. This is a star map describing the starry sky 27,000 years ago. The signs record the extremely deep astronomic knowledge, which is even beyond the modern people’s understanding.

Discovery Three In 1921, people happened to find an ancient Nied man’s skull in ambia, Africa. In the right of the skull there is an edge-smooth round hole, which scientists have decided only a bullet can make. But the ancient Nied people lived about 70,000 years ago, when mankind is supposed to have just learnt to use axes.

Was there really a prehistoric super civilization? God knows! 28. The Turkey map was made in _______.

A. the 18th century B. the 20th century C. the 1950s

D. the remote past

B. A huge statue.

29. What is the most important discovery of Discovery Two? A. An ancient city. C. A star map

D. Astronomic knowledge.

30. The hole in the ancient Nied man’s skull suggests that the ancient Nied people _______.
