Passage Three A Legendary King

1 The story of King Arthur is one that has been told for hundreds of years. There have been poems, books and even films made of his life, all of them telling the story a little differently.

2 The basic story is like this. There was a sword stuck in a stone. The legend said that whoever could remove the sword would become King of England and save the country. Many brave knights tried to pull the sword out, but they all failed. One day, a young boy called Arthur was walking past the stone. He didn’t know it, but he was in fact the son of an old king. He pulled the sword out of the stone and become the new King of England.

3 The stories of Arthur as King are tales of bravery and nobility. His closest advisor was Merlin, a powerful wizard. Arthur lived in a castle called Camelot with his beautiful wife, Guinevere. In the castle he had a round table, where he sat with his knights. It was round so that there was no one at the head of the table (where the most important person would usually sit) and Arthur and his knights were all equal. That is why they were called Knights of the Round Table. Even today people hold round-table conferences.

4 Arthur, with his famous magical sword Excalibur, and his closest knights Sir Lancelot and Sir Galahad, fought against the forces of evil in England. These were led by Arthur’s half-sister, Morgan, who was a witch. After many battles, there was only one left to fight. Arthur and his knights finally won the battle against Morgan’s army, and England was saved! However, Arthur had been hurt, and was dying. He threw his sword into a lake, where the magical Lady of the Lake could look after it, and then he died. He was buried in Avalon, in the south-west of England. According to the legend, Arthur will rise again to save England if it is ever in danger in the future.

5 But did Arthur really exist? Some say he was a Roman, other say a Briton fighting the invading Saxons, but there is no proof of his existence. But perhaps this doesn’t matter. The story of a great, noble and brave king, who died to save this country, is the one that people of all generations find.

Passage Four

1 The United States sets a restriction on exports items to China. Besides its Boeing planes, the United States only wants to sell its soybean, cotton and orange to China. It doesn’t like to sell high-tech products to China because it regards them as valuable items. But China’s export to the United States can help curb inflation and create four to eight million jobs in the country. Also, consumers in The United States have benefited from the import of Chinese products, which are cheap but also good quality.

2 A group of major US companies have urged the US government to cancel the proposal that aims to tighten controls on high-tech exports to China. Some worldwide-known companies such as Boeing and Microsoft are among the firms that speak out against Washington’s proposal to amend its export-control regulations. A union of manufacturers, software companies and high-tech industry groups said: “our fundamental view is the regulation should be withdrawn and reconsidered after thorough consultation with exporters.” The US companies argued that although the proposal was made in name of national security, it would not provide any additional security benefits to the United States. They warned that it could in fact undermine other US efforts to strengthen relations with China A Chinese researcher said he was glad to hear such a call from US companies because business pressures would also influence the US government’s final decision.

3 The restriction results in the trade imbalance between these two countries. To tackle the growing trade imbalance between China and the United States, encouraging US exports to China, in particular high-tech exports, is an effective way. China is always ready to take positive measures to solve the trade imbalance between the two sides, and the United States should not politicize its trade relations with China. The two countries should solve trade problems within the framework of the World Trade Organization(WTO).Cooperation between China and the US is not only beneficial to these two countries, but also contributes to regional and global peace, stability and development.

Passage Five The Explosion in Electronic Business

1. The recent explosion in electronic business has made it increasingly clear that a big change for brick-and-mortar retailing looms just around the corner. A new study conducted by Greenfield Online, Inc. indicates that online sales have already begun to take a bite out of offline sales, at least among Internet-savvy shoppers.

2. The big surprise, however, is that this shift is happening now, rather than some time in the future, as most industry observers have thought. The message to brick-and-mortar only stores is very afraid.

3. If your local mall or department store seems less crowded these days, it may not be entirely your imagination. The newly released shopping study finds that 39% of those with access to the Internet say they go to the store or mall less often now that they can easily shop for and buy a wide variety of products online. These results are significant to retailers, since Americans who use the Internet hold 60 percent of the buying power of the total US population.

4. The results of the study are based on a sample of 1,286 volunteers, drawn from an Internet user panel of nearly one million people, representative of Internet population in terms of age, gender and region.

5. When someone says “electronic business”, most people think of shopping on the Internet. But it’s more than that.

6. Electronic business affects three areas of activities: direct selling, integrating the supply chain and procurement, and the best solutions are likely to include all these three. Small companies in particular can benefit from the reach and flexibility electronic business brings to business, enabling them to compete effectively with larger players.

7. There are several good reasons to add electronic business to your business strategy: ● In China more than 100 million users (over 14-year-old) now have access to the Internet.

●There are no geographical boundaries. A manufacturer or dealer in Shenzhen can sell to buyers in Tibet and Sinkiang without opening branch offices.

●Entry and overhead costs are relatively low. It’s cheaper to launch a functional electronic business site than to open a new sales office or retail store.

8. Effective cash flow management is the key to business success. With electronic business solutions you can speed up payments from customers by taking credit card

orders over the Internet. Your invoicing could be improved by using Intranet-based electronic forms and e-mail.
