As the nights get longer, those who suffer from the winter blues(冬季忧郁症)will be planning ways to escape to the sunshine. But there may be a much simpler way of cheering yourself up----simply shining a bright light into your ear canal. Up to one in four Britons suffer from seasonal affective disorder(SAD), with seven percent of the population having full-blown SAD. It is caused by the brain not receiving enough daylight which is needed to trigger serotonin, a hormone(荷尔蒙)that controls mood. Symptoms(症状) range from mildly sleepy to depression and insomnia(失眠症), but a cure might be in sight.

Two clinical experiments, run by Valkee who make a device that can shine light into your ear and the University of Oulu in Finland, have found that carefully targeted light can help prevent the condition.

Juuso Nissil?, Valkee's co-founder and chief scientist said: “We presented earlier that the human brain is sensitive to light. These two clinical experiments show that channeling bright light via the ear canal into brain's photosensitive areas effectively prevents and treats seasonal affective disorder.”

The University of Oulu reported that in their first study, 92 percent of the patients with seasonal affective disorder achieved full remission(缓解) after a month of daily 8 to12 minutes’ doses (剂量)of light from the Valkee.

Timo Takala, chief physician at the Oulu Deaconess Institute said, “These clinical experiments show that bright light channeled into the brain via the ear canal is an important future method of treating seasonal affective disorder.”

Valkee launched its bright light headset in August 2010. It is classed as a medical device under EU regulations.

The device channels bright light direct to the brain via the ear canal to prevent and cure depression, mood swings and even circadian rhythm(昼夜节律) disorders such as jet lag(时差感).

It costs £185 and looks like an iPod - only the earphones send out light rather than sound. Anyone wanting to copy the effects with a flashlight is likely to be disappointed, it emits the wrong kind of light that is apparently too yellow.

Bilingual(双语的)education in schools has long been a political hot potato---it was banned in California by a 1998 ballot(投票)measure, which the state Senate is now asking voters to ban. But politics aside, there’s an increasing amount of scientific support for the benefits of knowing at least two languages.

Now a new study published by the Annuals of Neurology finds that you don’t even need to learn that second(or third, or fourth)tongue at a very young age: Picking up a new language even a little later in life can have serious cognitive(认知的)benefits for the aging brain.

Many recent studies have pointed out that bilingualism seems to be good exercise for the brain and later in life might even help delay the outbreak of dementia(痴呆). But what if it’s a self-selecting crowd? What if the people who learned two languages are just smarter to begin with? To help rule that factor out, researchers at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland studied 853 people who first took an intelligence test in 1947 when they were about 11 years old as part of a group called the Lothian Birth Cohort 1936, and retested them again around 2008 to 2010, when they were in their early 70s.

A total of 262 of the seventy-year-old reported having learned at least one language other than English enough to communicate in it. Of those, 195 said they learned it before age 18; 65 said they learned it thereafter. The researchers gave the participants a group of cognitive tests, including tests of their verbal(言语的)reasoning, their vocabulary and reading abilities, their verbal fluency and their ability to process information quickly. They found that bilingual speakers performed much better than expected from their baseline cognitive ability, particularly in reading and in general intelligence. And those who knew three or more languages performed even better. Learning a language seemed to make as much as difference in people’s later-in-life cognitive decrease as a gene that’s been tied to risk of Alzheimer’s disease and smoking habits.

These participants mostly learned their second languages after age 11. The results actually make a very interesting point-you don’t need to be a fluent speaker of a language to get the benefits, and you can start later in life, too.

57. The phrase “hot potato” in Para. 1 is closest in meaning to______.

A. learning a new language can benefit a lot when you grow old B. you have to learn a new language at a very young age

A. the bilingual speakers perform worse than those who only know one language B. learning a language may have the risk of Alzheimer’s disease or smoking habits C. people have to speak a new language fluently in order to gain some benefits D. the more new languages people know, the better they will perform 60. The hotel’s chief house officer, Ogilvie, who had declared he would appear at the Croydon’s suite an hour after his telephone call actually took twice that time. As a result both the Duke and the Duchess(公爵和公爵夫人)were very nervous when the door bell sounded

The Duchess went to the door herself. Earlier she had sent her servant out on an invented errand (差使)and, cruelly, instructed the moon-faced secretary-who was afraid of dogs-to exercise the Bedlington terriers. Her own nervousness was not lessened by the knowledge that both might return at any moment

A wave of cigar smoke floated in before Ogilvie. The Duchess looked pointedly at the half-burned cigar in the fat man’s mouth. “My husband and I find strong smoke extremely unpleasant . Would you kindly put that out?”

The house officer looked over with his piggy eyes with a funny expression on his face. His eyes moved on to sweep the spacious, tastefully furnished(配有家具)room, along with the Duke who faced them uncertainly.

“Pretty neat set-up you folks got.” Taking this time, Ogilvie removed the cigar, knocking off the ash and threw the butt(烟蒂)toward the fireplace on his right. He missed, and the butt fell upon the carpet.

The Duchess’s lips tightened. She said sharply, “ I imagine you did not come here to discuss our room.”

The fat body shook in a loud laugh. “No ma’am; can’t say I did. I like nice things, though.” He lowered the level of his voice. “ Like that car of yours. The one you keep here in the hotel, Jaguar, ain’t it?”

“ In what imaginable way does our car trouble you?”

As if the question from the Duchess had been a sign, the house officer’s manner changed. He asked sharply, “ Who else is in this place?”

It was the Duke who answered, “No one. We sent them out.”

“There are things it pays to check.” Moving with surprising speed, the fat man walked around the suite, opening doors and examining the space behind them. Obviously he knew the room well. After reopening and closing the door, he returned, apparently satisfied, to the living room.

“Now then,” he said. “You two were in that hit-’n-run.” She met his eyes directly. “What are you talking about?”

7

“Don’t play games, lady. This is for real.” He took out a fresh cigar and bit off the end. “You saw the papers. There’s plenty on the TV, too.”

Two high points of color appeared in the paleness of the Duchess’s cheeks. “ What you are suggesting is the most…”

“I told you-cut it out!” The words came forth with sudden cruelty, all pretense of politeness gone. Turning away from the Duke, Ogilvie waved the unlighted cigar under Duchess’s nose. “You listen to me, your high-an’-mightiness. This city’s burning mad-cops, mayor(市长)everyone else. When they find who did that last night, who killed that kid and its mother, then escaped, they’ll throw the book, and never mind who it hits, or whether they got fancy titles neither… 61. Why did the Duke and Duchess feel nervous about Ogilvie’s visit? A. Ogilvie was an important guest of the hotel

B. Keeping pets in their hotel room was against the rule.

C. Ogilvie might ask them about the accident of the night before D. Something might have happened that cause Ogilvie to be late

62. Duchess sent her servant and her secretary away before Ogilvie’s visit because______. A. Ogilvie wanted her to do so

B. it was the Duchess’s habit to do so C. certain errands had to be done for her

B. He knew a lot about houses and furniture

C. He knew more about the accident than the Duchess D. He was in charge of security matters in the hotel 64. What do we learn about the Duke and the Duchess? A. Their title were not true

B. They were poor and had to sell their car. C. They were the guests staying in the hotel

D. They didn’t read newspapers, nor watched TV

65. Ogilvie’s words and the way the Duke and Duchess acted suggested that_____. A. the Duke and Duchess killed two lives with their car the night before B. the Duke and Duchess would be tried in court and be punished C. Ogilvie would report the Duke and the Duchess to the mayor D. Ogilvie would ask the Duke and Duchess to report to the police
