Everyday Millan puts on his running shoes and takes a four-hour walk with 40 dogs---large and small, y 92 and old. Most of those dogs belong to him. The rest are at the heart of his work, they are troublesome dogs sent to Millan to learn good manners.

Millan, star of the TV show Dog Whisperer and author

of the best-selling book Cesar’s Way, has a special gift for working with these animals.

Growing up on a farm, Millan knew he wanted to work with dogs. His first job, at the age 15, was helping a veterinarian(兽医). He was so good at letting dogs quiet and handling all kinds of situations. People started to c 93 him “the dog boy”. Since then, he has built a rewarding job around his favorite animal.

“My grandfather taught me at an early age n 94 to work against nature,” he explains. In nature, dogs like to stay in a group and follow one leader. Millan’s specialty is teaching people to be leaders for their dogs.

Studying dogs on the farm where he grew up, Millan realized they need lots of exercise to stay quiet. He explains his way: “Exercise and rules f 95 , and then love!” he says that a lot of people get it backwards because they don’t realize what

Jackson was a mailman. Five days a week he rode his bicycle from village to village delivering letters. He knew everybody and everybody knew him.

“Here comes Jackson,” the children called, and their parents came to the doors of their houses. Everybody liked Jackson, and of course everyone especially liked getting letters.

“Something for you today,” Jackson would call and he would get of his bicycle and take a letter or a package out of the bag. Or he would say, “Sorry, nothing for you today,” and rode on.

Even the dogs knew and liked Jackson, and although they barked (叫)at strangers, they never barked at him. Except for one dog. Its owner, Mrs. Lin, had not lived in the village for many weeks, and every time the dog saw Jackson, it started barking. When he came to Mrs. Lin’s house, Jackson rode his bicycle faster. There were never any letters for her so he did not have to stop. Then one day, there was a letter for her. Jackson stopped his bicycle some way from Mrs.Lin’s house. The dog started barking. Mrs. Lin came to the door.

“A letter for you!” Jackson shouted.

“Why can’t you bring it to me?” Mrs Lin shouted back.

“What about your dog?” Jackson said. “I don’t want it to bite me.”

Mrs Lin laughed. “Don’t be frightened,” she said. “Everyone knows the old saying: a barking dog never bites.”

“You know the old saying and I know it,” Jackson said, “but how do you know that your dog knows it?”
