Our house was directly across a popular hospital. We rented the upstairs rooms to outpatients at the

clinic. One summer evening, there was a knock at the door. I opened it to see a truly awful looking man, his face lopsided from swelling, red and raw. He told me he’d been hunting for a room since noon but he had no success. “I guess it’s my face. I know it looks terrible, but my doctor says with a few more treatments…” For a moment I hesitated, but his next words convinced me: “I could sleep in this rocking chair on the porch. My bus leaves early in the morning.” I told him we would find him a bed, but to rest on the porch. It didn’t take a long time to see that this old man had an oversized heart crowded into that tiny body. He told me he fished for a living to support his daughter, her five children, and her husband, who was hopelessly crippled from a back injury. He didn’t tell it by way of complaint. He was grateful that no pain accompanied his disease.

At bedtime, we put a camp cot in the children’s room for him. When I got up in the morning, the bed linens were neatly folded and the little man was out on the porch. Before he left for his bus, haltingly, he

said, “Could I please come back and stay the next time I have a treatment? I can sleep fine in a chair.” He paused a moment and then added, “Your children made me feel at home. Grownups are bothered by my face, but children don’t seem to mind.” I told him he was welcome to come again.

In the years he came to stay overnight with us. There was never a time that he did not bring us fish or oysters or vegetables from his garden. When I received these little remembrances, I often thought of a comment our next-door neighbor made after he left that first morning. “You can lose roomers by putting up such people!”

Maybe we did lose roomers once or twice. But oh! If only they could have known him, perhaps their illnesses would have been easier to bear. I know our family always will be grateful to have known him; from him we learned what it was to accept the bad without complaint and the good with gratitude. 24. A. Because he wanted to sell them to the author B. Because he wanted to pay the rent with them C. Because his garden had a good harvest D. Because he wanted to thank the author

A. God helps those who help themselves. B. Misfortune can be a blessing in disguise. C. Never judge a book by its cover. D. Honesty is the best policy.

Parking in the CBD of any Australian city is expensive, hard to come by and often an unavoidable headache. But Rylan Kindness, a 16-year-old entrepreneur (企业家) from Brisbane, thinks he might have the answer to this problem.

It was after Rylan realized his parents were spending hours to try and find parking deals in the city that he came up with the idea for a centralized system. This system shows users the best price for parking in the area they want and offers users a daily deal with a discount .

Rylan now doubles as a high school student and the CEO of Parking Deals Australia, a role he took on four months ago. Parking Deals Australia isn't even Rylan's first business. When he was barely 11, Rylan came up with an idea to sell wholesale scooter parts online, purely because he just wanted some extra money. On the side, he's succeeding in other passions as well. However, he admits it hasn't always been smooth sailing.

“I've learned so many crazy things through trial and error. Every day I fail somewhere but I always try

You awake with a pounding heart and sweaty hands. Relax, you think to yourself — it was just a bad dream. But are nightmares truly benign(良性的)? Psychologists aren’t so sure. Although some continue to believe nightmares reduce psychological tensions by letting the brain act out its fears, recent research suggests that night ordeals (折磨) are more likely to increase anxiety in waking life.

In one study Australian researchers asked 624 high school students about their lives and nightmares during the past year and assessed their stress levels. It is well known that stressful experiences cause nightmares, but if nightmares serve to ease that tension, troubled sleepers should have an easier time coping with emotional ordeals. The study, published in the journal Dreaming, did not confirm that hypothesis (假设) : not only did nightmares not stave off anxiety, but people who reported being distressed about their dreams were even more likely to suffer from general anxiety than those who experienced an upsetting event such as the divorce of their parents.

of (剥夺) other sleep periods. The same was true for those who experienced fewer negative emotions in their dreams. In other words, having nightmares did not make dreamers more relieved in waking life — just the opposite.

What is not clear from these studies is whether nightmares play a causal role in anxiety. Most

researchers agree that if the dreams give rise to constant anxiety and concern, it may be a good idea to talk

to a mental health professional about it.

32. What is the attitude of the researchers towards the nature of bad dreams?

B. Those deprived of REM sleep tend to be less emotionally affected when shown disturbing images. C. Those who have trouble in sleeping have an easier time coping with emotional sufferings. D. Those who experienced fewer negative emotions in their dreams are more likely to be affected when shown disturbing images. 35. What is the purpose of the passage?

A. To inform us that nightmares may fuel anxiety instead of serving as an emotional release. B. To inform us that people with stressful experiences are more likely to cause nightmare.

C. To inform us that having nightmares makes dreamers reduce their tensions in waking life. D. To inform us of suggestions on how to release anxiety when you have a bad dream.

People prefer to be considered to be brave, but what kind of things can be exactly considered to be brave? It is not a question that can be answered by words, but by the actual deed. A boy with the name Jerry gave us a good example. Frank and Jerry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together.

One day as Frank and Jerry were going home after school, they saw some people fighting in the street corner. Frank said excitedly, “Some people are fighting! Let's go and have a look!” But Jerry refused, “It's none of our business. We'd better go home and don't get close to them. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don't want them to worry about me.”

“You are a coward, and afraid to go,” said Frank, and off he ran to the spot with some other boys. Jerry had to go home alone and didn't think about it anymore.

But Frank thought Jerry was a coward and told all the boys that. They laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Jerry and didn't want to play with him.

Jerry was sad but he wasn't angry with Frank for his rude behavior, because he had learned that true courage was shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys' laughter and continued to stick to his thought and go to school and study as well. However, Frank didn't invite Jerry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had his new friends who also thought Jerry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had lots of fun.
