1. M: I met Jim in the street today.
W: Really? Did he say something about his sister Kate?
M: Yes. She ought to be leaving Houston very soon, because her husband has taken a job in Los
Angeles.
2. M: So, how long have you been here?
W: Just a couple of days actually. I’m on a big journey. You know, I’m visiting all the places of interest here.
3. W: Be quick, or we will be late for the meeting.
M: Don't worry. We still have another 20 minutes. It is ten past nine now.
4. W: I'm translating a Chinese letter into French. And there are a few sentences I don't know how
to translate. Could you help me out?
M: Let me see...Hmm, these are too difficult for me. When do you need to finish it? Maybe you should use a dictionary.
5. M: Good morning. I’d like to borrow some novels in English. What books would you
recommend?
W: It might be a good idea to read some easy articles first. You will enjoy them more and be able
to read them fast.
M: That’s a good idea. Thank you for your advice.
6. M: I’d like to set up a meeting so you can come in and talk to us about your services in more
detail.
W: I am available next Monday or Tuesday, and time after 1:00 P. M. M: Let’s say Monday at 2:00. Do you know where our offices are? W: Yes, I have been there before.
M: Will you need any equipment set up for your presentation?
W: No. I have a computer. As long as we have a conference room, we should be all set. M: Ok, see you Monday at 2:00 p.m. W: See you then.
7. M: Are you still learning Chinese?
W: Yes, but I don’t have enough time for it. I have so many other things to do every day. M: It is the same with me. I can read Chinese now, but I still find it difficult to speak Chinese. And
I don’t always understand people when they speak Chinese to me. W: We don’t hear Chinese enough, I think. Do you listen to the radio from China?
M: Yes, I listen to the news from China almost every day. That helps me understand Chinese, but not to speak it.
W: We'd better go to China for a holiday. M: Right. That’ll be the best way.
8. W: Hello, everyone. Welcome to our program. Today, we are fortunate to have a special guest
with us. Some of you may have heard of him before. He’s an artist. His works have received many prizes and have been shown in over one hundred exhibitions across the country---Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, to name just a few. His name is Chris Cucksy. So Chris, tell us a bit about yourself.
M: Well, I was born in Springfield, Missouri, and grew up in Kansas. I didn’t come from a family with wealth or position, but I did manage to get a master’s degree in fine arts. W: When did you first start to make art? And what was the turning point in your life that made you an artist?
M: I always liked drawing as early as I can remember, so right from then, I knew what I was going to be: an artist.
W: What is it that always inspires you to create?
M: Nature is the biggest inspiration. I’m always inspired by things of beauty and harmony. 9. W: Who’s the girl in the picture? M: She’s Lena.
W: Lena looks lovely. Is she an American? M: No, she isn’t. She’s from Africa. She is thirteen. W: Oh, she’s as old as me.
M: Yes, but she can’t go to school like you. Her family is very poor, so she has to work every day.
W: She is only thirteen, and has to work? What does she do then?
M: She gets up at five o’clock in the morning and starts working with her father. Then she rides into town and sells fruit in streets.
W: Poor Lena! I think she wants to go to school very much.
M: Yes, she often dreams of studying at school! And she’s got another dream. W: What is it?
M: She wants to have her own shop one day!
10.Have I got any punishment when I was young? Well, yes, of course. I was only punished once while I was at school and that was only because I was forced to do something I didn’t want to do. I got punished because of a boy, who I was really frightened of. He used to cheat in exams by hiding his notes in a toilet paper roll and going to the toilet shortly after the exam had started in order to read them. It was quite a clever idea, but he got caught after a teacher found them. Then he tried writing his notes on the classroom wall. But when he moved the desk so that he could read them, a teacher saw him and he had to stop. Then, one day, he told me he would be sitting behind me and I was to move my paper so that he could read what I’d written. I did as he had said, but a teacher saw us and we were both punished. I had to write a composition about honesty but I think the teacher realized what happened, because she apologized for having to punish me. I can hardly forget the experience.
