My mother always devoted a certain time of day to me alone when I was a child. From the time I was a baby, at that certain time she ____25____(play) the piano and sing for me, putting me on the piano bench next to her when I was old enough to sit up. One day when she was too busy to do it, I crawled up on the bench and began to pick out “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” Mother came ____26____(run) in from the kitchen and saw me at the piano, but thought it must have been some fluke that allowed me to play, for I was only two and a half years old. So she asked me to play it again for her. I played it again and again, first for her, then for others, and have played all along. When I was older I went to the Juilliard School of Music. I kept on with the piano, ___27____ felt the need to know music from other perspectives. So I studied composing to find out what goes into a piece and conducting so I’d know what was going on with each part of an orchestra when I performed with one.
_____28____ of these areas have since become as much a part of my life as performing, and I can’t tell which I enjoy most. Perhaps I should describe each separately. In conducting, the greatest satisfaction comes from working with the musicians in the orchestra, seeing smiles on their faces, knowing they want to please me. And I know they don’t want to please me just to get me out of their hair, for I’m not an authoritarian figure to them. I’m someone with ___29____ they’re making music. It’s a nice, warm kind of feeling to look out on the orchestra and see all eyes on you, waiting to make music with you and looking to you to help them do it well.
Most people associate batons with conducting, but I’m impatient with them, and whenever possible, I avoid using them. Holding a baton uses nearly the whole hand and keeps it stiff. The hand is so much ____30____(flexible) and expressive without it, for obviously, you ____31___ do more with ten fingers than five. Personally, I’d tell girls to have a goal, a dream, to find out what you want to do in life, and do whatever it is to the best of your ability. Be prepared to hear the word “no” a lot. 32______ ______ ______you’ve worked hard and know you’re qualified, you should never take a “no” to heart, but just keep trying.

For almost two months Dominic York, a 23-year-old hairdresser, ____33___(wander) about hospitals at night, wearing a white coat and pretending he was a doctor. Yesterday he proudly claimed in court that ____34___ his complete lack of medical experience or qualifications, he had saved several people’s lives. He had even been allowed ____35____(assist) a surgeon during an emergency operation on a patient who was about to die on something she had swallowed.
“I watched one of those TV dramas about a hospital and suddenly I felt like ___36___(play) one of the roles myself. So I put on a white jacket and stethoscope and walked around one of the biggest hospitals in London. At first I just watched. ____37___ you’ve learn how doctors talk to patients, nurses and other doctors, it’s easy to take people in,” he said.
One of the patients he treated was Laura Kennan. She ____38____(knock) down by a car and fainted. When she came into the hospital, York was standing over her.
“He looked very professional. He told me his name was Doctor Simon. Then he gave me some sort of injection,” she said. And then he suddenly cleared off when a nurse asked who he was. She didn’t think there was anything wrong. “I would never have realized he was ____39___fake if a policewoman hadn’t showed me his photograph a week later. ___40___ the policewoman told me who he really was, I could hardly believe my ears.”
