Carrying an English dictionary with you at all times (whether it’s
an actual book or a phone app) can be very useful. It can save you a lot of shame if you’re having a conversation with an English-
speaker and forget a word in the middle of the sentence – all you have to do is take a second to look it up!
The absolute best way to learn any new language is just to speak it. It doesn’t matter if you only know five English words – speaking English with another person is the fastest, most effective method of improving. Don’t wait until you “feel more comfortable” speaking in English. Start speaking English today. You’ll be amazed at how quickly your language skills improve.
Even if you have good grammar and a big vocabulary, native English speakers may find you very difficult to understand if you
don’t work on your pronunciation. Correct, clear pronunciation is
important if you really want to improve your level of English.
Listen closely to how native English speakers pronounce certain
words and sounds and do your best to copy them.
The biggest problem that stands in the way of learning a new language is the fear of making mistakes. Don’t be afraid of making a mistake and don’t be shy! Of course you can’t speak a new language perfectly at the start. Try to express yourself even if with difficulty.

Mr. Knight was the manager of a hotel. One weekend all of the hotels in the city were full because there was a large meeting. On Friday night, three men came into the hotel and asked for rooms. Mr. Knight explained that because of the meeting, there were no rooms ready for use. The men were very unhappy because they had no place to stay.
Mr. Knight wanted to help them. He remembered that Room 418, a very small room upstairs, was empty. He asked the men if they would share it. The three men said they would.
Mr. Knight said that the rent would be thirty dollars. Each man should only pay ten. The men agreed, paid the money and went up to the room.
Mr. Knight soon began to feel sorry. “Thirty dollars is too much for that small room,” he thought, “I should give them a discount (打折).”
He called his assistant over and said, “Here’s five dollars. Give it to the men in Room 418. I’ve asked them too much money for that small room.”
The assistant took the money. While he was on the way to Room 418, he started to think, “How can three men divide five dollars? I’ll give each of them only one dollar and keep two dollars for myself. The men will be happy enough to get anything back. I’ll take a little money and Mr. Knight will never know.” So the assistant returned one dollar to each man.
Now the puzzle is: Each man had at first paid ten dollars. When each got one dollar back from the assistant, it means each man had actually (实际上) paid only nine dollars. There were three men. $9×3=$27. The assistant kept $2. $27+$2=29. Where is the missing dollar? 24. With the help of the manager, the three men . A. went to another hotel

The world itself is becoming much smaller by using modern traffic and modern communication means(通讯设备). Life today is much easier than it was hundreds of years ago, but it has brought new problems. One of the biggest is pollution. To pollute means to make things dirty. Pollution comes in many ways. We see it, smell it, drink it and even hear it.
Man has been polluting the earth. The more people, the more pollution. Many years ago, the problem was not so serious because there were not so many people. When the land was used up or the river was dirty in one place, man moved to another place. But this is no longer true. Man is now slowly polluting the whole world.
Air pollution is still the most serious. It’s bad for all living things in the world, but it is not the only one kind of pollution. Water pollution kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us angry more easily.
Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. They stop people from burning coal in houses and factories from sending dirty smoke into the air.
Pollution by SO2 is now the most dangerous kind of air pollution. It is caused by heavy traffic. It is sure that if there are fewer people driving, there will be less air pollution.
The earth is our home. We must take care of it. That means keeping the land, water and air clean. And we must take care of the rise in pollution at the same time. 27. Hundreds of years ago, life was it is today. A.as hard as
B. as easy as
C. much easier than C. noise pollution
D. much harder than D. rubbish
28. Pollution comes in many ways. We can even hear it. Here “it” means . A. water pollution

29. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. Many countries are making rules to fight pollution.
B. The pollution of the earth grows as fast as the world’s population does.
C. If people could go to work by bus, it would help to fight against the problem of SO2. D. The pollution is not so serious because there are not so many people living on the earth.
