If you could capture the carbon that thousands of power stations would otherwise pump into the atmosphere, where would you put it? According to the International Energy Agency, the world needs to fit 3,400 coal-fired power stations with technology to capture carbon dioxide by 2050.
So-called carbon capture and storage (CCS) is often labeled as expensive and unproven, though most of its problems lie in the capture part of the process. Energy-hungry When it comes to storing the billions of tonnes of carbon dioxide that would be captured, the answer for Britain seems obvious—we can put it under the North Sea, into our scrubbers are needed to soak greenhouse gases from exhaust gases, which drain coal?s power output and reduce its efficiency.
emptying natural gas fields. But where do nations without access to such convenient geology turn? One option is to pipe waste gas directly into the sea. In very deep water, scientists think carbon dioxide would form a dense slush that would stay on the seabed for hundreds of years. Wally Broecker, a climate expert at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at New York?s Columbia University, says 480bn tonnes of carbon dioxide could be safely dumped in the deep Pacific in this way: the amount created by about 16 years of the world?s current fossil fuel use.
Scientists in the US have tested this concept and the impact it could have on deep-sea life. Experts at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute released small amounts of liquid carbon dioxide into a series of plastic cylinders on the seabed, some 3,000m down in waters off California. A few weeks later, samples of marine life were taken from inside the areas of the experiments and the surrounding sea bed and from some 100m away.
The scientists were interested in the reaction of three types of tiny sea creatures called foraminifera—single-celled organisms that make up a large part of life at the bottom of the deepest oceans and are a critical link in marine food webs. The study found the survival of the tiny creatures depended on whether they formed shells, called tests. Those that did not make shells, or used particles they collected from the surrounding seabed, were not affected. Less fortunate were the foraminifera that build calcium carbonate shells, they were wiped out where they came into direct contact with the carbon dioxide. Writing in the journal Global Change Biology, the scientists say these foraminifera will face “considerable challenges” in areas where CO2 is dumped. Question 61: Choose the best answer according to the passage. 61. What is the best title for this report?

An energy crisis is one of the biggest crises that the world is going to face in the near future. We have come to a juncture where we cannot stop it from happening, given the kind of demand that we have and also the absence of a suitable substitute, but we can certainly delay the arrival of this imminent occurrence. So here we discuss some of the ways of conserving energy. Before telling you how to conserve energy let me tell what we need to conserve. We need to conserve anything that uses coal, natural gas or oil, since these are exhaustible sources of energy.
We should start with reducing the consumption of energy that we use in our daily lives like electricity, coal and water. It is necessary to conserve water as well because the water that we use in our homes has been purified, and this purification also requires energy in some form. Most of us have a bad habit of leaving the lights, fans and television turned on even when we are not in the room. If we become a little more attentive and careful we can actually save quite a lot of energy.
■The refrigerator in your house has a thermostat, which controls the temperature inside it, but there are energy savers (or power savers) that do this more effectively than ■Next let?s look at the dishwasher, which uses up less energy when it is full than washing the dishes manually. But if you try and make two compartments in your sink so ■When you take a bath and need the water heater lower the temperature at which the thermostat cuts off the electricity supply.
■Next let?s look at the washing machine, which can also be used wisely to save energy. Set the washing machine to warm instead of hot to save energy, and only do the others. If there are leaks through which outside air can get into the refrigerator, try and block those leaks.
that you can soap wash and clean the dishes in a compartment full of water you would be able to save a lot of energy.

D. effective ways to avoid energy crisis
C. useful ways to conserve energy
Questions 67 to 70: Answer each of them in fewer than five words.

If you want to have good business ideas you need to understand the way in which the market works. This is often easier said than done, and is especially true in the current economic environment in which we find ourselves. Despite the fact that many believe that the worst is over, there are still bound to be hiccups in terms of the international economy for a while to come.
It is quite amasing that even though we have been through a very difficult economic situation, there are still many people who are willing to take a risk with a new business The advancement of the Internet has shown us that there are now a lot of business ideas that simply did not exist a number of years ago. These creative people could be the venture. These entrepreneurs are going to be even more important as the new financial world order takes shape and one would want to encourage them wherever possible. bread and butter of the next economic wave and we need to ensure that they are free to flow with their ideas. They are going to be the next significant change in the global economy.
While there is indeed potential for new businesses, there are two main problems that hamper their creation. Firstly there is a feeling amongst many people that they are simply not able to think of an original idea that would see them make a success of themselves. On the other hand, those people who do have the ability to come up with these ideas could find that they are just not able to commercialise them and turn them into a business.
Idea incubation is a key way in which to address the feeling that people have when they think that they are not able to come up with their own ideas. There are loads of examples of centres that have been established in order to assist people in this aspect of idea generation. It helps them to have a sounding board and it is something that governments can get involved in as a way of meeting their job creation targets.
Ensuring a successful business is possible if there are enough resources to help out with this. Having a virtual portal that helps people with all their requirements is probably the best way to do this. It is the way of the future and this is where most business ideas are likely to come from as we move forward. Questions 71 to 73, mark:

Translate the underlined sentences of the following passage into Chinese.
(76) Girls are no less competitive than boys; they simply employ more subtle tactics, a study of pre-schoolers suggests. While boys use head-on aggression to get what they want, girls rely on the pain of social exclusion.
To test the apparent differences in how very young children compete, Joyce Benenson at Emmanuel College in Boston, Massachusetts, US and her colleagues divided 87 The sexes behaved similarly when there were two or three puppets to go round. The differences became clear, though, when there was just one puppet for each group. Boys tended to ask for the puppet, grab at it, or even chase the child who had it. (77) In contrast, girls punished the puppet-holder by excluding her from their groups, (78) These socially aggressive tactics may explain why girls exhibit greater jealousy over same-sex friendships than boys. They could be trying to protect themselves Melissa Emery Thompson at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, also in the US, praises the study for creating “organic yet controlled situations in which the four-year-olds into same-sex groups of three. She says the results help to dispel the myth that females are the less competitive sex. (79) Even at an early age, they avoid risky direct aggression in favour of subtler forms of competition, such as small shifts in tone and expression, or spreading rumours.
(80) These differences also explain why human males tend to cooperate more effectively in groups while many females “work well in pairs and tend to maintain only a few close relationships”. Section B

Task II
The question, “Are you busy on campus?” has caused so much concern in society because quite a few students? answer is “No”. This trend of students? being idle on campus is becoming more serious all the time, and is causing great concern among educators and parents.
This situation can have many harmful consequences. First of all, parents are the victims, because they pay the bills for their children?s college education. Secondly, the students themselves may suffer the most in the end because they are not taking advantage of their best opportunity to lay a solid foundation for their futures. Finally, more people will question the mission of universities—whether they turn out contributing citizens or lazybones to society; If the latter is true higher education becomes meaningless.
In my opinion, more effort should be exerted to bring this situation to an end. We should encourage students to develop self-discipline by making and enforcing an all-round plan to ensure they have meaningful and fruitful lives on campus. Only when most students understand their real mission in university and value their time there, can we hope to reverse this negative trend.
